[www.keralites.net] What is Yoga?

The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated.
We can think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit. What is commonly referred to as "yoga" can be more accurately described by the Sanskrit word asana, which refers to the practice of physical postures or poses. Asana is only one of the eight "limbs" of yoga, the majority of which are more concerned with mental and spiritual well-being than physical activity. In the West, however, the words asana and yoga are often used interchangeably.

Yoga has been use as an exercise component, and has been studied as an intervention for many conditions. It can stimulate the flow of healing life energy, and it can treat a wide variety of illness such as back pain, stress, and depression.
Years have passed, and Yoga has been modified with different versions of the physical exercises. Hatha Yoga became so popular, and was considered as a kind of low-impact physical exercise that is used for therapeutic purposes.
The goals of yoga are to improve ones health. Since then, yoga has been used as a supplementary therapy for diverse conditions such as cancer, diabetes, asthma, and AIDS. Yoga has been proven to offer different, and multiple benefits for individuals ranging from consciousness of a ones body capabilities, and satisfaction from challenging oneself physically. Yoga can increase the energy, and mental clarity, and concentration.
