What is Psoriasis?
People with psoriasis, (pronounced suh-RY-uh-sus) have a fault in their immune systems that cause too many skin cells to be produced. Their bodies don't know how to get rid of these extra cells, and they cause build ups on the skin, resulting in red scaly patches. It is not a contagious disease. 
Plaque Psoriasis is the most common form and affects 90% of psoriasis patients. The skin features inflamed raised patches, usually seen on elbows, knees, the scalp and the lower back. These patches are typically covered with white or silver scales, which can itch and burn.
Guttate Psoriasis is more common in children or teenagers and is often triggered by upper respiratory infections. It features small pink to red spots and are located on the buttocks, upper arm, thigh, and Scalp areas.
Psoriatic Arthritis. This is a when you have psoriasis and then develop arthritis (inflammation of the joints). The symptoms include joint pain, stiffness and swelling of fingers and toes.
Inverse Psoriasis is seen in areas of the body with folds, including armpits, groin, under the breasts, and around the genitals and buttocks. These skin regions feature smooth red plaques of skin. 
Erythrodermic Psoriasis is rare and very serious. The symptoms are fiery red skin, peeling, itching, burning, an increased heart rate and changes in body temperatures. This causes protein and fluid loss, leading to infection, pneumonia, or congestive heart failure. If you have these symptoms, go to a doctor or a hospital immediately.
Pustular Psoriasis mostly occurs in adults. Pustules, which are pus-filled bumps, surround red skin and form in one area of the skin. If this skin irritation is body wide, this is a more severe condition. You should seek medical attention immediately.


 
Treatments
Topical Medication. These are creams that can be spread over the affected areas. Usually they include steroids or vitamin D3, which aims to slow the growth of the excess skin cells. Some are available over the counter such as corticosteroid. Other well known topical medicines are calcipotriene, anthralin or tars.
Phototherapy. This is also called light therapy and employs ultraviolet light to slow down the excessive skin cells growth. Sometimes doctors use creams together with the lights to treat psoriasis.
Oral Medications. Only prescribed for more severe psoriasis cases these pills or biologics that work to slow the growth of skin cells. Doctors are cautious in prescribing these as they have dangerous side effects on the kidney and liver.
Things to Avoid
Cold dry climates. It is thought that cold weather worsens symptoms while hot and humid weather conditions are said to alleviate symptoms.
Scratching, picking or peeling skin. Be gentle with your skin by avoiding cuts or scrapes. Patches of psoriasis often form around injuries. Be careful when trimming your nails, as this is a common site for psoriasis to flare.
Stress and anxiety can worsen symptoms or causes flares. You can read tips on how to reduce stress in your life.
Smoking and alcohol cause flares. Quit smoking and limit daily alcohol intake.
Overexposure to sunlight. Sunburn can lead to flares of psoriasis, and of course skin damage and skin cancer. Shorter periods of sun exposure help relieve psoriasis
Some medications have been linked to aggravating psoriasis symptoms including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, beta-blockers, and lithium.

Treating Psoriasis at Home
Occlusion therapy. This therapy involves applying moisturize to an area of skin, and then covering it with a wrap of fabric or plastic overnight. In the morning you should exfoliate. The occlusion keeps the skin moist and can allow for the medicated creams to work more effectively. It's best to discuss this method with your doctor as certain steroids and creams can have dire side effects.
Water Therapy & Dead Sea Salts. A 15-minute soak in a bath full of Dead Sea salts has been shown to soothe itchy skin and remove some of the scales. It is recommended to put a moisturizer on afterwards. 
Swimming in seawater can also help as the salt in the water helps remove dead skin and scales caused by psoriasis can be loosened. It is also recommended that you shower and moisturize afterwards.
Cayenne Pepper Paste. Application of this to the skin reduces pain and itching. Initially you will experience a burning sensation but with subsequent applications the burning will be diminished.. Cayenne features capsaicin, the main ingredient in peppers, which produces heat and is an often used ingredient in pain relief creams. It's important to be cautious when using this method as contact with other areas of your skin or eyes can be painful.

10 Tips to Prevent Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is becoming an increasing problem among young people and the Baby Boomer generation. Although hearing damage is irreversible, the problem is preventable with a healthy dose of knowledge.
Hearing loss is caused by exposure to sounds that are too loud or continued exposure to loud noises for extended periods. In the past hearing loss was largely due to working conditions with noisy equipment. Protective gear and safety laws have made that a thing of the past. Hearing loss is now mainly caused by exposure to overly loud noises in our leisure pursuits and home environments.
The Guilty Parties
The thing with hearing loss is that we don't realize we're losing our hearing immediately. It's gradual and incremental. The sounds we hear don't have to be unpleasant or physically painful. Things like loud television, radio, traffic, neighborhood construction, and appliances all contribute to a noisy environment, and you can accumulate damage without even realizing it.  
It's also important to remember that the louder the noise, the less time you should listen to it without protection. We measure sounds in decibels (db). The higher the decibel number is, the louder the noise. Experts agree that any sound below 75 db isn't likely to cause damage, but any regular prolonged exposure to sounds above 85 db will contribute to hearing damage and eventual loss.

Tips to Prevent Damaging Your Hearing
1. Have a noise detox
If you are exposed to loud noise unintentionally, go on a hearing detox afterwards. You need time to let your ears recover. Give yourself a sound rest of 16 hours or more to recuperate, with at least 16 hours if you have spent 2 hours hearing 100 db.
2. Distance: Don't stand so close
If you are exposed to a loud noise try to keep your distance from it. The physically closer you are to a loud sound, the more damaging it is. Try stand at an angle from the noise, and don't be directly in front of the source of the sound.
3. Beware snorers
If you sleep next to a snorer, consider sleeping with ear plugs because loud snoring can reach 80 - 90db. Here is an article with tips for snorers.  
4. Regular quiet periods
Try limit your time spent in noisy venues. If you are in a noisy location for a long time, like a conference, make sure to go outside regularly and give your ears a break from the noise.


5. The 60:60 rule
If you listen to music via headphones, avoid trying to drown out any outside noises with volume and instead consider investing in noise-cancelling headphones. Apply the 60/60 rule: set the volume at a maximum of 60% and listen for no more than 60 minutes a day.
6. Take care in the car
Music in the car is an excellent way to relieve the stress or boredom of a long commute but beware the dangers. Listening to loud music in a confined space has more of a risk of damaging your hearing than listening in a more open space.
7. Recognise harmful sound levels
Understand sound levels in your environment. Once you have learnt what is damaging, you can practice healthy hearing habits. There are even smartphone apps that measure sound for you.  
Many young people engage in unhealthy hearing behavior. Be proactive in educating them so they too can have lifelong good hearing.
8. Wear protective gear
If you should have to hear loud sounds (attending a music event or doing home repairs with noisy equipment), then you should get protective gear. Cottonwool in the ears will not suffice. There are many varieties of earplugs and ear muffs available on the market. You can get wax or foam plugs, or custom made molds.
9. Give your ears a rest
Allow your ears regular breaks from over exposure to noise. Peaceful days out of the city are recommended if you live in a loud urban area.
10. Test your hearing
Schedule an appointment with a professional to learn your baseline hearing rate, for future reference. If you are diagnosed with any damage or loss, consider a hearing aid to slow down the process and seek support of professionals to establish good hearing practices

Goodbye crow's feet! An at-home treatment that promises to zap laughter lines

Crow's feet — even the name of those tell-tale wrinkles at the side of our eyes is ugly, although the more optimistic of us like to refer to them as 'laughter lines'.
They appear when the skin loses collagen and hyaluronic acid, but one thing's for sure — those of us who have them don't find them funny. 
'We lose 80 per cent of our natural hyaluronic acid between the ages of 40 and 80,' says cosmetic doctor Natalie Blakely.

'We also lose collagen and elastin from the skin which is what makes us look older. The first place we lose fat from in the face is the undereye area and that, combined with the lines caused by smiling, laughing and squinting into the sun, is what causes those wrinkles to deepen as we age.'

So what's the solution? Botox can paralyse the muscles that crinkle when we grin but then having the injections can create a glassy 'frozen' look. Alternatively, fillers made of hyaluronic acid can be injected to plump up the skin in this sensitive area although, like Botox, they cost around £300 a go. 
Now a new crow's feet treatment is causing a buzz. Launched this month in Harrods, WrinkleMD is a painless, needle-free £130 home device dubbed 'the crow's feet eraser'. It uses new technology to push molecules of hyaluronic acid deep into the skin, where previously only needles could reach.

In a U.S. study led by dermatologist Dr Robert Harper, women aged between 35 and 65 used WrinkleMD for a month. Weekly silicone 'impressions' were taken of their crow's feet and, after four weeks, their lines had reduced by an average of 41.7 per cent — though it was 80 per cent in one case. This was compared to a control group testing a luxury eye serum whose wrinkles improved only 2.7 per cent.

The secret of WrinkleMD is a process called iontophoresis. It occurs when a mild electronic current is run through a disposable pad infused with hyaluronic acid and a muscle-relaxing peptide, pushing these particles deep into the skin. 
Two 40-minute treatments a week are recommended for the first fortnight, then the eye pads should be worn once a week for another 40 minutes for the next fortnight. After this, the manufacturers recommend a weekly top-up treatment to maintain results.
The pack contains six pads and you can buy refills of eight for £99. So is it too good to be true? Dr Blakely, medical director of The Light Touch clinic in Surrey, says: 'Hyaluronic acid is great for skin rejuvenation and getting it into the skin without needles reduces the risk of infection. 

'However, only 22 women completed the study — and the effects were variable. The treatment seems expensive and time-consuming, and there is little indication of how long the results will last.'
With Dr Blakely's warnings ringing in my ears, I try WrinkleMD myself. I'm 48 and my fine lines were deepening and creeping further around my face. I felt a fool wearing the eye pads at home, especially in front of my husband, and I was sceptical that any kind of magic was happening at all. 

But I was very impressed by the results. I looked in my magnifying mirror after just one treatment and saw the lines on my left eye had vanished and the ones on my right had significantly faded. Even my husband agreed the pads had done something. 
I've not had such instant results from anything else. Botox would probably last longer but this way my eyes look more natural. They still crinkle a bit when I smile, but the lines are virtually gone when I relax. So finally I have crow's feet I can live with — and laugh at.
