[www.keralites.net] POTASSIUM DEFICIENCY

 POTASSIUM DEFICIENCY
Your body should maintain a certain level of Potassium. This natural chemical in the body helps your cells use and produce energy, according to Medicine Net. If potassium levels in your body drop too low, your cells cannot function properly. When the potassium levels in your blood are lower than normal, it's called hypokalemia, Medline Plus reports.
What does this mean to your body and health?
When potassium levels are too low, your cells don't work properly. This can lead to muscle aches, cramps, weakness and heart palpitations, according to Medicine Net. WebMD recommends watching out for these other symptoms that may indicate that your potassium is too low:
-Tingling or numbness in limbs
-Inability to move arm or leg muscles
-Nausea or vomiting
-Constipation
-Feeling thirsty all the time
-Fainting (low blood pressure)
-Depression
*Note: small drops in your potassium will more likely result in minor symptoms (like cramping, fatigue, and constipation). Larger drops in potassium levels could result in unusual heart rhythms and extreme fatigue, according to Medline Plus. In extreme cases, it could be fatal.
What causes low potassium levels?
Low potassium levels can be caused by some pretty common factors including antibiotics, vomiting or diarrhea, and sweating. Other causes of low potassium include kidney disease, eating disorders and low magnesium levels. Long sessions of exertion (like an intense workout) could temporarily lower your potassium levels too.
What you can do to prevent low potassium naturally.
To raise your potassium naturally, there are plenty of healthy foods you can add to your diet. Try adding these foods after a workout, after a bout of the flu or when you're feeling unusually tired: Avocados, baked potatoes, bananas, carrots, lean beef, milk, oranges, peanut butter, spinach, salmon, beans and bran.
For severe cases, your doctor may prescribe a potassium supplement, according to Medline Plus.

[www.keralites.net] Health Benefits of black Salt

The Health Benefits of Black Salt
Salt is one of those substances that human civilization is built upon, not only for its taste, but also for its health benefits and its ability to preserve food.
The Indian black salt, also known as 'Kala Namak', is a popular variety of Indian volcanic stone salts. It sees extensive use in India, Pakistan and internationally, by those who know its benefits. Its unusual color comes from the presence of tiny amounts of iron and other minerals.
black salt
This special salt is found in the Himalayan mountain ranges and has some excellent health benefits that you should know about. In India, black salt is often prescribed for patients with high blood pressure or those who require a low-salt diet. Why? Because black salt is low on sodium, and so doesn't raise the blood pressure like normal salt does. It is also a popular treatment for heartburn and intestinal gas. In short, it provides a boost to the digestive system.
The health benefits of black salt:
1.. A healthy alternative to sea salt
Salt is incredibly common in everyday life. We find it in a huge amount of snacks and dishes. This is usually iodized salt or sea salt. However, an overdose of salt in our daily lives is a common problem that may lead to paralysis, thyroid problems and high blood pressure, to count a few. The two most dangerous chemicals in sea salt are potassium iodate and aluminum silicate. This is why sea salt is banned in some countries. However, black salt is a great alternative to iodized salt, and here are a few of its benefits compared to iodized salt:
- Treats arthritis problems
- Treats paralysis problems
- Lowers high blood pressure
- Deals with impotency issues
2. The therapeutic benefits
According to centuries of tradition, black salt is a 'cooling' salt that is filled with therapeutic benefits. It can be used as a laxative and as a cure for intestinal disorders. It has benefits for eyesight and unlike common salt, does not enhance your sodium intake. Due to its high sulfur content. However, due to its high sulfur content, it can also weaken the digestion in large amounts, and so a balanced use is recommended, no more than you would regular salt.
3. Soft, beautiful looking skin
Another use for black salt is skincare. Instead of chemical peels, special soaps and spas, consider adding black salt to your bath water. It works as an excellent healing agent, especially good for cracked, swollen feet, athlete's foot, warts and sprains. Just sit back and let it heal your pain and relieve your worries while you enjoy a truly refreshing bath. When you come out, your body will feel truly rejuvenated.
Note: If your skin is sensitive to irritation, it's best not to make the water too hot, or you may incur some itchiness.
4. Strong, problem-free hair
If you're one of many who suffer from a receding hairline, you're probably frustrated by all the supplements and tonics that never seem to work. So try something more natural this time. The essential minerals in black salt will boost your hair's natural growth, strengthen it and treat its split ends. If you have dandruff or acute hair loss, I recommend taking black salt with tomato juice at least once a day. Not only will it encourage hair growth, but will also make your hair thicket, with more sheen and luster.
Do try to use this wonderful natural product and see the difference for yourself. Don't forget to shoot us a comment. Stay fit and stay healthy!

[www.keralites.net] BLOOD DONATION FACTS BELOW 60 YEARS

BLOOD DONATION FACTS BELOW 60 YEARS
Some Facts on Blood Donation
An adult has about 5 litres of blood in the body.
Typically, about 300 ml (anywhere between 200 and 450 ml) of blood is taken by a blood bank (depending on requirement) from a person.
The blood donated is recouped by the body within 2 to 7 days.
One unit of blood(about 450 ml) helps save 3 lives.
This is because, the blood taken from a donor is separated into its components (Red cells, White cells, Plasma and Platelets), each of which can be transfused into the blood of a recipient, separately.
It takes approximately 10 minutes to remove one unit of blood from the donor . Including the time taken for filling up a form prior to donation, a physical examination (BP and weight) of the donor and the time to relax after donating blood, the whole process can be completed in about 45 minutes to an hour.
The blood removed from the donor is tested for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis, Malaria parasite and blood group. In other words, persons affected with diabetes and taking medicines to keep diabetes under control can also donate blood.
Whenever you donate blood, you will be removing excess cholesterol accumulated in the blood, thus reducing the chance of heart attack.
Take some biscuits / cake and coffee / tea / fruit juice, after donating blood and sit (lie down if you feel giddy) for about 5 to 10 minutes.
The donor can resume regular activities after about 30 minutes of donating blood. Avoid the following:
Climbing stairs within 30 minutes
Smoking
Every year, our nation requires about 4 crore units of blood while availability is 40 Lac units (estimates differ - another info states that requirement is 90 Lac units and availability is 40 Lac units; all the same, there is a definite shortage of blood in the country for saving lives)Donating blood is a safe process - a fresh needle is used for each person and there is no fear of contracting any disease. The no 1 reason given by donors to donate blood is "I want to help others". The two major reasons for a person not donating blood is "Never thought about it" and "I don't like needles" Persons from the age of 18 to the age of 60 can donate blood, except when they are affected with HIV +ve, cancer, Hepatitis B or C (within the previous 3 years), seizures, syphilis, and women during their menstruating cycle.

[www.keralites.net] Bridge-man Girish Bharadwaj has constructed around 127 hanging bridges across streams and rivers

Bridge-man Girish Bharadwaj has constructed around 127 hanging bridges across streams and rivers
Bridge-man Girish Bharadwaj helps people crossover in lives-1

He has constructed over 91 bridges in Karnataka, 30 in Kerala, 3 each in Andhra and Odisha till date.

Bharadwaj has constructed around 127 hanging bridges across streams and rivers in remotest areas and has helped people living in far-flung areas to enter the mainstream and the mainland.

Girish Bhardwaj: The dam maker

Girish Bharadwaj, son of B Krishna Bhat and Lakshmiamma began his journey by constructing a 55 meter long bridge near across river Cauvery in Nisargadhama near Kushalanagar. He followed it up with an 87 meter long bridge across river Payaswini in his hometown Sullia and the 290 meter long bride in Hukkeri of Belagavi district, being the longest, constructed in 1998.

Resident of Arambur in Aletty village of Sullia, Girish graduated in mechanical engineering and started his adventurous journey by manufacturing agricultural implements and gobar gas equipment to make life easier for rural folk. Later he shifted towards construction of hanging bridges and never looked back thereafter with his friendly approach to address people's problems in villages marooned by floods during rainy season.

Girish Bhardwaj strongly believed in friendly approach in attaining his goals and took to building bridges in the trouble torn world. Girish recollects a touching moment in his life and feels none should be treated as untouchables based on that incident in 2007. He was asked to construct a hanging bridge in Laknavaram village of Warangal district across a large lake. The entire area was under Naxal dominance that time, and Girish was asked to shelve his plans. Undeterred by the threats, Girish took a decision to go ahead and succeeded in completing the entire project within a short span of four months. Astonished by the 'Sea Change' in the 'living atmosphere', teary-eyed locals including Naxals fell at Girish's feet to express their gratitude. Girish considered it as one of the greatest achievements as he had conquered the hearts of 'armed men considered threat to society' through friendship, love and mutual respect. He had overcome forces that were trying to build walls and stall development. In the end, hostile naxals showed innate urge to enter the mainstream.

Gold medals for excellence

Girish Bhardwaj served in state home guards department for 24 years form 1984-2008. During that period he excelled in providing first aid and in training official and staff of Home guards department. Girish was awarded two Gold medals after he stood first in both the fields.. Later, he underwent training in fire fighting at Delhi and served as the head of fire services division and donned the role of command officer in Sullia.

In his marvelous journey of touching and changing lives, he bagged several awards and appreciations including DK District Rajyothsava Award in 2011.

'Padma Shri' for Social work given by Union Government during 2017 is the latest feather in his glorious cap and Girish attributes success to his 'Ayashilpa' team..(Aya means steel in Sanskrit and Shilpa means art).
