Good morning,

How often do you smile?

In the next five minutes I am going to tell you some food items
that will help you give a confident smile.

1. Your teeth need calcium and phosphorus for strength and to
remineralize themselves. Hence milk, nuts, meat, chicken and cheese
are ideal for oral health. Cheese has a low carbohydrate, and high
calcium and phosphate content enabling it to balance the mouth's
pH. So, instead of chocolates and sweets have a small cube of
cheese everyday!

2. Vitamin C foods bestow healthy gums. Periodontal diseases can
increase with vitamin c deficiency as it is a great antioxidant
needed to repair connective tissue and aid bone regeneration. So
have oranges, lemons, kiwis, gooseberries and vegetables like
broccoli, green pepper, cauliflower, tomatoes and sesame seeds and
more. Add these acidic foods in to a large meal.Vitamin D
deficiency increases the risk of gum bleeding. So get some exposure
while you can.

3. Fresh raw onions in the diet can destroy various types of
bacteria, including Streptococcus mutans that cause cavities. So
eat onions, and chew a mint afterwards!

4. Mint will help you get rid of the foul smell of onions, freshen
your breath, destroy all bacteria and clean your teeth and tongue.

5. Celery is a great food for those who love their teeth. It is
chewy producing a lot of saliva, which in turn neutralizes
bacteria. Celery is also an abrasive food and serves to massage
your gums, and clean teeth. So have those crunchy apples and
carrots for dental health.

6. Catechins in green tea can kill the bacteria in the mouth that
turn sugar into cavity causing plaque. You can enjoy the health
benefits of green tea by having 2-5 cups a day.

7. Grape seed extract contains polyphenols which prevent tooth
decay and gum disease by thwarting the growth of bacteria.

8. Though water cannot called a "food" drinking plenty of water in
necessary to hydrate gums and stimulate the secretion of saliva.
That's one of the reasons why it is important to drink a glass of
water after eating food.

At last not the least, avoid eating as much sugar as possible and
smile along!

I would be happy to answer any other queries you might have.

Nine Foods That Prevent and Combat Diabetes

Can controlling your blood sugar levels and preventing Diabetes complications can be as simple as eating the right foods? The answer is yes. Certain foods are overflowing with nutritional substances that stabilize the blood sugar levels, protect out heart, and even save our vision from the harmful effects of Diabetes.

The following 9 foods can give us all a great advantage in our war against Diabetes:

salmon
1. Cold Water Fish

As if getting Diabetes isn't hell enough, those that suffer this disease have doubled their chance to suffer from heart disease. That is why a diet rich in the Omega-3 amino acid, also known as 'the good fat' in cold water fish, can help reduce the levels of 'bad' cholesterol while raising the levels of 'good' cholesterol.

cinnamon
2. Cinnamon

A research in Maryland, at the Human Nutrition Institute, found that if you add just half a spoon of Cinnamon a day to your diet, your cells will gradually become more sensitive to insulin. This means that they will metabolize sugar into energy in a more efficient process, and so will control the blood sugar levels better.

Diabetes patients who received an extract of cinnamon every day for 40 days straight experienced a noticeable reduction of sugar levels in the blood after eating, as well as marked improvements to the health of their hearts.

Don't forget - You can add cinnamon to almost anything. So keep it handy when cooking and add just a bit every day, it may prolong your life!

3. Citrus Fruits

As you may already know, people who suffer from diabetes often have a shortage of vitamin C. So citrus fruits, chalk full of vitamin C as well as loads of antioxidants - are a great choice.

More importantly - Yummy.

4. Apples

At a long-term research in Finland, researchers found that men who ate the largest amount of apples had 20% less diabetes or heart associated death. Their research indicated that the active ingredient responsible for this was quercetin.

If you can't find apples or don't like them (rare but happens), other lesser but still good sources of quercetin are onions, tomatoes, green vegetables and forest berries. So yes kids, your mother is right, eat more greens!

5. Any Food rich in fiber

Not only does it help reduce those frequent trips to the bathroom, but a research at the university of Texas found that people who have raised their daily fiber intake from 24 grams to 50, have experienced dramatic improvements in their blood sugar levels. In fact, the fiber rich diet is no less effective than certain diabetes medicines.

6. Legumes

Legumes are a great addition to soups, salads and a variety of other foods. This low-fat, low-calorie ingredient is also rich in fiber and proteins and helps to reduce the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The fibers slow the release of glucose into the blood, which prevents the rise in blood sugar levels.

7. Dark Chocolate

Researchers at Tufts university found that dark chocolate can improve the cells sensitivity to insulin (much like cinnamon as we've mentioned) and may reduce the risk of diabetes.

Dark chocolates, especially those that haven't gone through much processing, tend to contain more of substances called flavonoids, as well as less saturated fat than does milk chocolate. However, Cocoa powder and baking chocolate may offer a higher concentration of flavonoids than dark chocolate does. To those who like White chocolate, we have bad news - they typically contain none.

 8. Green Tea

Research shows that chronic inflammation caused by fat-rich foods, little to no exercise and a diet lacking in the proper amounts of fruits, vegetables and 'good' fat - can increase your chances of getting hit with a cardiovascular disease and sabotage the body's attempts to absorb the sugar in your blood.

Simple solution: Drink green tea and orange juice. They are filled to the brim with substances that prevent and fight inflammation.

The green tea is also a wonderful source of antioxidants.

9. Vinegar

Two teaspoons of vinegar taken before a meal can help reduce our blood sugar levels, according to a research held at the university of Arizona, testing three groups of people: Healthy, Showing early diabetes signs, and full on diabetes.

The results: An hour after taking the vinegar, the diabetes patients had a 25% reduction in their blood sugar levels. To the healthy and those with early signs of diabetes the news was even better - A 50% reduction in t

Skin Care Solutions

Glowing and healthy at any age

Countless teenagers dream of acne-free complexions, while 40-year-olds might cringe at the sight of fine lines and wrinkles. The truth is that every age has its own unique set of skin challenges. The key to having a beautiful complexion at any age is to know your skin's characteristics, and choose gentle products suited to your skin's type.

In your teens and 20s
Your skin
Fighting acne may seem like your biggest priority (and no, those in their 20s aren't immune from the annoyance of blemishes). However, what you should really focus on is prevention—of sun damage, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation (uneven complexion and dark spots).
Your game plan
  • Use a gentle cleanser and a light moisturizer, such as a lotion rather than a cream. For blemishes, use a natural acne-fighting spot treatment gel (available at health food stores) on problem areas. Key ingredients can include tea tree oil or naturally sourced beta hydroxy acids.
  • Never squeeze pimples, as this can increase the risk of scarring and slow healing time.
  • Prioritize sun safety. Wear a good quality natural broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen daily, available at natural health retailers. Skip the suntanning, including tanning beds! Choose protective clothing when out in the sun, wear sunglasses, and seek shade when possible.
In your 30s
Your skin
You may notice hyperpigmentation and the appearance of some faint lines. Lack of sleep and stress (due to career demands, children, or other life stressors) may contribute to dull skin and dark eye circles.
Your game plan
Consider adding brightening products to treat hyperpigmentation, exfoliating products to slough off dry skin and fight a dull complexion, and a cooling eye gel to your skin care toolkit.
  • Natural brightening products that target dark spots range from cleansers to eye creams. They often include ingredients derived from flowers and roots.
  • When choosing an exfoliator, consider one made from sugar, salt, oatmeal, or jojoba beads. Avoid those made from plastic microbeads—these common ingredients travel down the drain and into waterways, where they pose a danger to the environment. Alternatively, choose a liquid exfoliant that contains natural acids, such as those derived from fruit.
In your 40s
Your skin
The good news: acne is likely a thing of the past. The bad news: this is also the time when our skin's elasticity begins to decrease and collagen loss occurs. Skin often becomes drier as well.
Your game plan
Nourishing is the key word. Support your skin and protect it from the daily elements by using a richer, thicker moisturizer, such as a cream rather than a lotion, and a nightly serum. A weekly nourishing facial masque can also add hydration to the skin.
In your 50s
Your skin
Dry skin and wrinkles become more pronounced in your 50s. Hormonal changes can also change your skin in unexpected ways—after menopause, women's skin produces less oil, which can contribute to more dryness and itchiness.
Your game plan
While there may be no way to reverse wrinkles, there are many natural products formulated to help firm, soften, and hydrate mature skin. Good investments include a high quality facial cream and eye cream.
In your 60s and beyond
Your skin
The layer of fat beneath our skin thins as we age, and bruising can also occur more frequently, due to thinner skin and loss of support around blood vessels in the skin. You may also notice age spots. Also called "liver spots," age spots have nothing to do with the liver. They're pronounced hyperpigmentation caused by years of sun exposure.

However, growing older gracefully means recognizing that your face reflects a life well lived—including all the laughing and smiling you've done—rather than trying to combat every wrinkle. The focus at age 60 and beyond is on protecting your skin, which is thin, delicate, and often sensitive.
Your game plan
Since skin is so delicate, it's best to stop exfoliating and use only unscented, gentle products. While you can't reverse age spots, continue to use a sunscreen and brightening products to prevent further damage.

Best Practices for any age
No matter what your age, follow these essential tips to keep your skin in tip-top shape.
Don't go into product overload
Less is more when it comes to your skin care routine, so when in doubt, use fewer products. Using too many products at one time—especially antiaging products—can be irritating.
Use your ring finger to apply eye cream
Strange, but true! Your ring finger is your weakest finger, and therefore the most gentle on delicate under-eye skin.
Be gentle!
Wash your skin using your fingers; a washcloth, sponge, or brush can irritate sensitive skin. And needless to say, never scrub or pick your skin.
Don't smoke
In addition to the endless list of internal damage smoking can cause, it can also do damage to our skin, making smokers look older. Not only can smoking damage collagen and elastin in the skin, but it can also deplete the skin of oxygen.
Limit stress
Too much stress can exacerbate acne and skin's sensitivity. Try to make time in your day for stress-reducing techniques such as yoga or meditation, journalling, soaking in the tub, playing with your pet, or chatting with a friend—whatever works for you.

Nutrients for skin health
Eating plenty of vitamin C-rich foods—as well as limiting unhealthy fats and junk food—may contribute to healthy-looking skin.
There are also skin supplements available at health food stores that are formulated to help improve skin's appearance.
Ingredients in skin supplements to look for include
  • gamma-linolenic acid (found in borage oil or evening primrose oil), which may improve the skin barrier and calm sensitive or irritated skin
  • antioxidants, such as grapeseed extract and lycopene, which are thought to improve skin appearance and boost collagen
