11 Mistakes You Make that Age You.

aging gracefully
Aging gracefully comes easier to some, while not so easy to others. Sometimes it's a factor of just having good genes, but often they are the decisions we make during our lifetime that determine how fast we'll appear to age. You may not realize it, but most people commit mistakes every single day that make them age faster than they should, harming their skin and quickening the appearance of old age.  Here 11 mistakes we all make that age us.

1. You try to do too many things at once (Multitasking)

If your to-do list is longer than your arm and you are dealing with the stress of juggling many projects or tasks at once, you're doing yourself a disservice, says Raymond Casciari, Chief Medical Officer at St. Joseph Hospital. Several studies have shown that day-to-day stress triggers the release of free radicals in the body, which damage cells and quicken the ageing process. The good doctor suggests focusing on one task at a time.

2. You rarely pass on dessert.

Other than being an obviously unhealthy habit, having a sweet tooth may be adding years to your face, as sugar molecules attach themselves to protein fibers in our cells, a process known as glycation. This can lead to an ashen look, dark circles around the eyes, a loss of facial contours, wrinkles, puffiness and bigger pores. So if you want to hold on to that youthful glow, don't over-do the sugar.

3. You get less than 5-6 hours of sleep a night.

Not getting enough sleep doesn't only give you black bags under your eyes, but has been linked, through several studies, to a shorter life span. According to Dr. Casciari, the founder of a sleep lab at St. Joseph Hospital, getting about 7 hours of sleep is optimal. So if you find yourself nodding off, low on energy or finding it hard to focus, you're probably not sleeping enough, and it may age you faster than you'd like.

4. You spend most of your day sitting.

Sitting and leading a sedentary lifestyle are some of the worst problems for aging people in the modern world. Most people do very little physical activity, and the result is an increased risk of kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer and of course obesity.

Studies show that people who exercised 150 minutes a week or more lived 10-13 years longer on average.

5. You don't use any eye creams.

The skin around your eyes is thinner than the rest of your face, and that is why it usually starts showing signs of aging sooner. Keeping the eye area moisturised can take years off your face. The best creams contain Retin A, which is a form of vitamin A. But you can also add antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C.

6. You only use sunscreen when on vacation.

If you only use sunblock at the beach, you may actually be doing more harm to your skin while running errands and driving than a whole day spent on that beach. Skin damage accumulates, and the sun's rays are the #1 reason for ageing skin. Dr Taylor, associate professor of dermatology, recommends that you use an SPF between 30-50 for daily protection.

7. You wear too much makeup.

This is not a judgement, just a fact. Many make-up products are oil based, and can clog your pores and cause outbreaks. Overusing skin products with fragrances, alcohol agents and chemicals that irritate, may cause premature lines and wrinkles.

8. You sleep with your face against the pillow.

Sleeping on your stomach of side with your face mashed into the pillow may create wrinkles and make your aging process look like it's going faster. Our facial skin gets less flexible with time, and so as we lay on the pillow night after night, our skin may not spring back and smooth the lines you had, and so the pillow can leave permanent marks on our face. So sleep on your back or invest in a satin pillowcase that'll keep your skin smooth.

9. You keep your house very warm.

When you turn up the thermostat or light a fireplace because it's cold, it's tempting to making it hot and toasty inside. But the problem is that the thermostat, and also the fireplace, suck moisture out of the air in the house, which leads to dry skin. If this goes on, as indeed in cold climates it may, it will lead to damaged skin with ageing effects.

So invest in a humidifier, and set to 40-60% humidity. This will free your skin from the itching, scratching and even flaking that comes with dry air.

Another way to go is placing a wet towel over a radiator or a bowl of cold water in the room.

10. You purse your lips

Drinking your beverages through a straw can help you avoid staining your teeth, but just like squinting can give you wrinkles around the eyes, so can pursing your lips give you wrinkles around the mouth.

By the way, this also often happens when you smoke a cigarette.

11. You've stopped eating fat altogether.

Some amounts of fat are required to maintaining a youthful appearance and feeling, according to Franci Cohen,  nutritionist and exercise physiologist from Brooklyn, NY. Heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids, which you can find in oily fish such as mackerel or salmon, as well as nuts like walnuts and flax seeds, will keep your skin plump and supple. This will prevent wrinkles, while also boosting the health of both your brain and heart.

13 Household Products You Should Never Mix

More accidents happen at home than anywhere else. Many of these can be avoided by just knowing what not to do. If you avoid these 13 combinations, you'll save yourself time and money, and a trip to the hospital.
1. Different battery brands
Mixing batteries from different brands can lead to them leaking battery acid. The reason is that manufacturers use different chemical compositions for their batteries, which produce different levels of current. When one runs out of juice, the other can still keep running, but that causes it to leak, which can damage electronic devices.
2. Rubbing alcohol & bleach
Rubbing alcohol contains ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, which, when mixed with household bleach that contains sodium hypochlorite, will create chloroform and hydrochloric acid, as well as chloroacetone or dichloroacetone. These compounds can cause damage to the nervous system, lungs, kidneys, live, eyes and skin. Also, high levels of chloroform can lead to dizziness, nausea, loss of consciousness and even death.
3. Ammonia & bleach
This combination is also very dangerous, producing vapors that can cause severe damages to your respiratory system. And that's not the worst thing that can happen – if there are large amounts of ammonia, you might create a substance called liquid hydrazine. Liquid hydrazine is highly toxic and potentially explosive.
4. Vinegar & bleach
If you add a weak acid to bleach, it creates vapors of toxic chloramine and chlorine. These vapors can cause serious chemical burns to your eyes and lungs.
5. Vinegar & baking soda
Vinegar is an acid and baking soda is a base – those two cancel each other out, rendering the resulting solution useless.
6. Vinegar & hydrogen peroxide
Combining these two products in the same container will create the corrosive paracetic acid. In high enough concentrations, paracetic acid can irritate and even damage your skin, eyes, throat, nose and lungs.
7. Grapefruit & medicine
Compounds in the grapefruit interfere with enzymes in the stomach, which are in-charge of metabolizing certain types of medicine. This ends up increasing the level of certain chemicals in the blood and can lead to a deadly overdose.
8. Alcohol & ibuprofen
Taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach can lead to damage to the stomach-lining. Adding alcohol into the mix stimulates this process and can worsen the effect. Damage to the lining can lead to internal bleeding, ulcers and other problems.
9. Alcohol & acetaminophen
Chronic consumption of alcohol causes the body to produce certain enzymes that interact adversely with acetaminophen. The reactions can damage the live and even be lethal. In the U.S. alone, over 200 people die every year thanks to this deadly combination.
10. Dairy & antibiotics
Dairy is rich in calcium, and while it may be good for your bones, it's interaction with antibiotics is anything but. Calcium prevents the antibiotics from being absorbed into your body, reducing their effectiveness.
Antibiotics that are most effected by dairy are: ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and tetracycline.
11. Milk & energy drinks
The acid in the energy drinks mixes with proteins in the milk, causing the milk to curdle very quickly. The results are usually the same – projectile vomiting…
12. Retinol & glycolic acid or alpha hydroxyl acid
Both of these skin-care products may help you look younger, but mixing them together is a bad idea. Glycolic acid has a different level of pH than retinol, so when both are used, the glycolic acid becomes dominant, reducing the effectiveness of retinol considerably. It can also cause some mild skin irritation.
13. Retinol & sunlight
Recent evidence shows that retinol can become toxic when exposed to direct sunlight, and increase your chances of getting sunburns. It is recommended that you only use it at night, or if you choose to use it during the day – use sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight as much as possible.

10 Healthier Eating Substitutions

People are a lot more educated to foods today than several generations ago. As a result, we're able to make much smarter and healthier eating decisions. There are still instances when you might hear a rumble in your stomach and may think of eating something bad. You can put down that salty bag of chips and replace it with a handful of almonds instead. Sound appetizing? Here is a full list of 10 Delicious Alternatives to a Healthier Lifestyle

fresh fruits

1) Eat Healthier Snacks instead of Junk Food - It seems as if junk food is everywhere we look. The supermarket shelves are stocked full of candies, potato chips, cakes, donuts and assorted baked goods. The grease, oil, refined sugar and saturated fats found in these foods are the major contributors of many unnecessary health problems.

You can still enjoy a quick snack and get the essential nutrition by replacing junk food with healthier alternatives. Fresh fruits, such as apples and oranges, make for excellent substitutes to candy bars. A handful of almonds replaces a bag of potato chips, baked potatoes replace French fries and skim or low fat milk replaces whole milk. You can also choose low fat frozen yogurt topped with fresh fruit over ice cream. Snacking can still be fun after all.

2) Dried Herbs and Spices Instead of Salty Foods - A High daily intake of sodium can result in certain heart problems over time. Rather than adding salt to your meals, consider the healthier alternative of cinnamon, turmeric, cayenne, clove, garlic, ginger, sage, parsley and basil. Not only will you be adding delicious flavors to your favorite dishes, you'll also be limiting any risk of heart diseases in the future. Go ahead and spice things up!

3) Choose Whole Grains Over Refined Ones - Refined grains are consumeddaily with nearly every meal. They are commonly found in white rice, white flour, white sugar and white breads. Cereals also contain large amounts of refined grains and tons of sugar.

The healthier solution here would be to replace the refined grains with whole grains. Substitute brown rice for white rice, whole grain bread over traditional white bread, and healthier bran cereals over the sugary variety of cereals. Oatmeal is an ideal replacement for refined cereal. Try cooking with quinoa and barley as well.

4) Eat More Cold-Water Fish and Less Red Meat - We all love our steaks and beef, but they also contain a high amount of saturated fats. Consuming a regular diet of red meat on a daily basis may increase the risk of hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, obesity and strokes.

Cold-water fish, such as tuna, swordfish, whitefish, mackrel, salmon, anchovies, and trout all contain Omega-3 fatty acids, which are the essential fats the body needs. Omega-3 helps combat depression, boosts memory production and greatly reduces the risk of Alzheimer's Disease. Fish can also be frozen for long periods of time, so it never goes to waste.

5) Add Avocados to Your Diet Instead of Mayonnaise -Mayonnaise is most commonly used while preparing sandwiches and in dips. Mayonnaise gives that dry turkey sandwich a bit of extra taste. Mayonnaise is also loaded with plenty of trans and saturated fats, which are very unhealthy for you.

Avocados are the healthy alternatives to mayonnaise. They contain over 25 essential nutrients which are all vital health components. These specific nutrients protect against cancer, prevent heart diseases and prevent bone diseases from occurring. Avocados are also the main ingredients used for making guacamole, which perfectly complements whole wheat tortilla chips.

6) Eliminate Butter with Extra Virgin Olive Oil - You can't hear a frying pan sizzle without the sweet sound of butter being applied to it. Some of the most popular dishes are cooked exclusively with butter. Butter is delicious but extremely unhealthy. Butter significantly increases high cholesterol levels, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and heart diseases.

Use extra virgin olive oil instead of butter to give your meals a solid dose of essential Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Olive oil can be substituted for butter when baking or cooking.

7) Go Organic! - What exactly does organic mean? Simply put organic means natural. Organic farming relies on the useage of natural fertilizers and pesticides, which do not contain harmful toxins.

Non-organic foods are generally exposed to harmful pesticides and other dangerous chemicals. So, the next time you're outside fruit and vegetable shopping, consider visiting your local farmer's market instead.

8) Drink Water Instead of Sugary Beverages - Soda contains high amounts of refined sugar with absolutely no nutritional values whatsoever. Sugar found in sodas and other sweetened drinks lead to fatigue, cause dental problems, trigger depression and can eventually lead to diabetes.

Avoid sugary beverages and drink water as often as possible. Water flushes out all the toxins in the body and helps to promote regular digestion. Filtered water is even better because it removes all chemicals found from the tap. Make sure you carry a bottle of water wherever you go.

9) Make the Switch from Regular Breakfast Cereals to Oats -Walk down any cereal aisle in the supermarket and you'll be bombarded with a tremendous selection of unhealthy cereals that are loaded with refined sugars.

Cooked oats make for the best substitute for a healthy morning breakfast. You can add a pinch of cinnamon, brown sugar, chopped nuts or fresh fruit to give it a little extra flavoring. A healthy bowl of oatmeal can drastically reduce heart diseases, stabilize blood sugar, and lower cholesterol.

10) Drink Green Tea Instead of Coffee - Most people prefer to start their day with a cup of coffee. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee can be very difficult to resist. Coffee also carries a list of health problems that include; acid reflux, intestinal problems, heartburn, anxiety, nausea and can induce unwanted stress.

Green tea is the healthier hot beverage alternative from coffee and provides a quick caffeine boost as well. Green tea is a staple in Asian culture and served with nearly every meal. Green tea also contains powerful antioxidants which fight off diseases and lower the risk of cancer. There must be something special in that green tea!

A few minor changes to yourt dietary intake can make a tremendous impact to your health and well-being, and that is certainly some food for thought!
