Alzheimer, meditation
According to a 2015 based article, listed on the Alzheimer's Disease International website, close to 50 million people were to have Alzheimer's disease the world over, as of 2017. This article further suggests that the number will double every 20 years and thus, reach numbers like 75 million by 2030 and 131.5 million by 2050.
As per an article published on World Alzheimer's Day 2017, India had 1.6 million people suffering from this disease, and it was expected to triple by 2050. So, it is evident that we are dealing with a silent, and yet painful condition that is not getting the importance that it should. As we already know, it is a disease which is usually as part of the aging process. People start losing their memory or cognitive capabilities as a result of this. It becomes essential for the caregivers, to ensure the safety of these people as they may end up wandering without knowing it, and worse, may not be able to get back home, or remember any names or contact numbers. However, scientists across the world have been actively researching this topic. There have been studies conducted to understand what causes it, what actions can be taken as preventive measures, etc. Recently, one study has suggested that meditation done daily may help in alleviating the signs and symptoms of dementia.
The Findings
This study, conducted on people with early Alzheimer's found that a daily short dose of meditation helps reduce blood pressure, and perceived stress, while improving sleep, memory, and mood, not just in the patients, but also their caregivers.  This gives a ray of hope for many people affected the world over. While there are many ways in which the disease is being managed and treated, prevention, as they say, happens to be the best cure, here as well. Hence, it is best if one can bring in meditation into the daily routine.
As we all know, meditation has a lot of benefits for the mental as well as the physical well-being of people, especially for senior citizens. This is also something that can be done by anyone, anytime and needs to specific training as such or any tools, etc. Meditation is a crucial aspect of most yoga classes. If not, today one can easily download meditation apps as well and start practicing. Even immobile can easily do meditation, and hence, there is no excuse really for not doing it, when the benefits are so high.
Other Tips
The other tips one may follow to try and keep this dreaded disease at bay, are:
  • Eating mindfully as that ensures that, the body gains maximum benefits out of what we eat. Follow a healthy and balanced diet with fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and cereals, the right meat and seafood, etc.
  • One should also be mindful about the body weight and should exercise regularly to maintain the weight and not get obese.
  • The brain should be kept as active as possible with mind games, puzzles, constant learning of new skills, etc. This ensures that the brain cells are in nonstop action and will remain healthy, and not allow for any build-up which ultimately leads to the Alzheimer's disease.
  • Constant health checkups to monitor all vital health parameters like sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. and timely treatment, helps in remaining healthy. This is more so if there is any family history of Alzheimer's. Also, females are more at risk than men and should take special care, to keep themselves active.
One of the significant factors leading to Alzheimer's is, of course, age. However, this is something that we cannot possibly avoid. Hence, the next best step would be to be aware of the disease, follow the tips to prevent its occurrence and watch out early signs and symptoms like a slow decline in memory and cognitive capabilities.
