[www.keralites.net] Fwd: The Ugly Truth About Your Toothbrush

Facts You Didn't Know About Your Toothbrush

You might not be aware of the fact that the personal cleaning tool you use every day is actually home to an alarming number of bacteria. According to researchers at the University of Manchester, your toothbrush holds more than 100 million bacteria, including E. coli and staphylococci (Staph). There may also be traces of fecal germs, as revealed by the University of Alabama. Your mouth itself contains hundreds of microorganisms and the plaque you're trying to brush off your teeth every morning is also a type of bacteria.

This might sound slightly repulsive, but it's good to be informed and be more cautious with the hygiene of your toothbrush - something that is often taken for granted. Although bacteria will always be lurking around, maintaining a healthy balance of them may reduce the risk of diseases spreading. Take control of this by using the following tips for the best ways to store your toothbrush.

1. Avoid Exchanging Toothbrushes

We are generally immune to the germs that already exist in our own mouthes, so any identical germs found on our toothbrush are unlikely to make us sick. However, when you share your toothbrush, these germs might have a diverse effect on another person. Avoid spreading germs by sticking to your own toothbrush and keeping it clean.

2. Don't Brush Where You Flush

The bathroom carries a lot of germs, but if there's one place you'd want to avoid keeping your toothbrush, it's close to the toilet. Every time we flush, bacteria are vaporized so it's follows suit to store your hygienic tools as far from the toilet as possible. Make sure you keep the toilet lid closed while flushing to reduce the spread in general. You may want to store your toothbrush in a medicine cabinet to effectively minimize the possibilities of having those germs land on your toothbrush.

3. Be Aware of Your Toothbrush Holder

According to the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), toothbrush holders are the third-most germ-borne household item, after dish sponges and kitchen sinks. This is rather expected since toothbrushes are often left damp. They can also pick up airborne bacteria in the bathroom, which as previously said, contains fecal germs, along with other harmful germs. Don't forget to clean your toothbrush holder regularly to keep it from accumulating germs.

4. Adopt the Right Storage Ritual

You may have your toothbrush stored away from the toilet and in a clean toothbrush holder, but still some germs are impossible to avoid. There are some things you should remember every time you're done brushing your teeth to guarantee cleaner storage.

5. Sanitizing Your Toothbrush

Some products are made with sanitizing your toothbrush in mind. These include sprays, rinses, ultraviolet light, and you may even find toothbrushes with built-in antibacterial bristles. These can help keep your brush cleaner, but they're not yet scientifically proven to reduce any risk of illness. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), what actually works well is antibacterial mouth rinse, which may reduce the number of bacteria forming on your toothbrush. One important thing to avoid is sterilizing the toothbrush in a microwave or dishwasher - this will only damage your toothbrush.

6. When it's Time to Toss It

It is recommended that you replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months, to make sure it's not being overused and accumulating too much unhealthy bacteria. You may replace it even more frequently if the bristles become frayed, if you're ill, or if you have a weakened immune system. Furthermore, children's toothbrushes should be replaced even more regularly. If you use of an electric toothbrush, make sure you replace the head just as regularly, although in general, electric toothbrushes are not highly recommended for your teeth because they can further push germs under your gums rather than eliminate them.

7. Practice Good Oral Care

Other than keeping your toothbrush in the utmost hygienic conditions, you have to make sure your teeth are also in good hygiene. Keep your teeth clean by including additional dental practices in your routine such as flossing and rinsing your mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash. This is especially recommended before brushing, to reduce  the amount of bacteria finding their way onto your toothbrush.

[www.keralites.net] The real reason you're tired all the time

The real reason you're tired all the time!

Daily Mirror

Too knackered to exercise, or too tired for chores?
You might be low on iron. It is one of the most common causes of unexplained tiredness

Four out of five women complain of extreme tiredness. More often than not, this is because they're low on iron. We spoke to Dr Hilary Jones and nutrition scientist Dr Emma Derbyshire to find out more about this deficiency and what you can do to feel more lively.

1 What iron does

"Iron is essential for the oxygencarrying part of red blood cells, which is why tiredness is usually the first sign of a shortfall there," says Dr Hilary. Without enough iron, your red blood cells simply can't carry enough oxygen to your organs and tissue, which means they don't work as efficiently.

2 Feeling exhausted?

Feeling knackered is such a common complaint that doctors have even given it a nickname -TATT, or Tired All The Time syndrome.

"One of the most common things I see in my surgery is people feeling worn out," says Dr Hilary. If we can't figure out what's making them tired from their lifestyle, we'll do a blood test and check their iron levels." After Vitamin D, iron is the second most common deficiency.Other symptoms include palpitations, feeling dizzy or fainting, restless legs at night, shortness of breath, cold hands and feet, and headaches.

3Who's at risk of being deficient?

Menstruating women: During a heavy period, women lose a cup of blood -which can contain 125 mg of iron.

Sporty types: "Even among young women who are quite physically fit, the levels of deficiency are high -60% of female athletes are not getting enough iron and it impacts their performance," says Dr Hilary.

Vegetarians: "Iron found in meat is the most easily absorbed type," explains Dr Emma. "Healthy foods like beans, lentils and nuts might be good for you, but they can block the absorption of iron."

Irritable Bowel Syndrome sufferers: IBS means nutrients are often not well digested in the gut, so sufferers can be low on iron and Vitamin B12.

4 Can we just eat more spinach?

"There's been a drop in the amount of iron people are consuming and it's down to changes in eating trends," explains Dr Hilary."People are eating 13% less red meat than they used to, which contains the most easy-to-absorb form of iron."

More than a quarter of women aged 19 to 64 don't eat enough iron.

"Many try the "just eat more dark leafy greens" approach, but you'd have to eat 17 tablespoons of of spinach a day to get your recommended daily amount," says Dr Emma. But there are a few ways you can boost your iron levels.Vitamin C has been shown to improve the absorption of iron by up to 181%, so try having a small glass of orange juice with your meal. Some foods such as milk, tea, beans and chilli hinder the absorption of iron, so limit your intake of these.

5 The problem with pills

If your GP diagnoses you with low iron or anaemia, treatment is simple: tablets such as ferrous sulphate to boost your levels. But 80% of women taking iron supplements complain of unpleasant side-effects. Strong supplements can be hard on your digestive system, and can cause black stools, constipation, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and nausea.

Menstruating women need about 18 mg of iron a day, but many supplements contain 200 mg.Because the body only absorbs the iron it needs, the excess left in the gut causes those nasty side-effects.

"In an ideal world, every patient would be tested and prescribed an appropriate level for their deficiency," says Dr Emma."Many people have had such bad experiences with traditional supplements they have been put off."

Last year, there were over six million prescriptions for iron supplements in the UK, but 40% of those who were prescribed these admit to skipping their tablets altogether because of the side-effects.

[www.keralites.net] Fwd: 3 Fascinating Health Studies You Should Really Know About

3 Fascinating Studies with Amazing Repercussions

We live in exciting times, where science is taking leaps and bounds in explaining our behavior, life, and the universe. As a person who s to educate himself, I try and read at least one interesting research or study every day, so when I came across these three fantastic pieces, I had to share them.

The Key to Longevity May Hide in Spicy Food

Interesting Research

In a 9-year-long study recently published in the British Medical Journal, researchers from China, USA, and the UK followed the consumption levels of spicy foods in 487,000 people, aged 30-79. When excluding other risk factors, researchers found that people who consumed higher amounts of spicy foods had up to 14% less lihood of mortality. The effects were considerably stronger when the subjects consumed fresh chili peppers, rather than dehydrated ones.

Hot peppers are known to contain certain anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic agents, which probably contributes a lot to these numbers. While the numbers would encourage you to eat spicy foods on a more regular basis, researchers warn about overindulging, as too much of the hot stuff can lead to stomach ulcers.

Furthermore, it is possible that the increased longevity is the result of other factors, and the research subjects just happen to eat spicy foods, but if that is not the case then we may have found a true miracle food.

How Physical Gestures Affect Our Mood

We all know that the brain controls the body and that every movement we make is the result of some cognitive process. But recent studies have shown that our body has the same level of influence on our minds, too. In particular, these five gestures and positions have proven to have the most effect:

Actions are remembered louder than words

In 2004, a psychological study of children had them read a few sentences about a farm. Later on, some kids reenacted what they read using toys while the others did not. It was found that the children who reenacted the scenes had better reading comprehension and remembered more details about what they read. Another research found that actors will remember their lines for much longer if they were spoken while they were moving, when compared to lines spoken while they were stationary.

Interesting Research

You need to move to be creative

In 2014, Stanford University conducted a study of the effects of movement on thought, and discovered that people will be more creative during and after taking a stroll, even if they walked in a "boring" place, or even on a treadmill. This could explain while some people pace when they're thinking.

Slouching actually makes you moody

Ohio University psychologists discovered that when told to slump their shoulders, people quickly became moodier and reported negative feelings. When sitting up straight, the same people displayed far less negative feelings and reported less work-related stress.

Turn that frown upside down

When researchers used Botox injections to partially paralyze the faces of people suffering from depression, they found that this also reduced their levels of unhappiness. When people are sad, they tend to furrow their brows, and the study found that the act of furrowing actually increases the level of unhappiness. When the Botox disabled the person's ability to frown, it created a kind of short-circuit in their brain that prevented the negative feedback loop.

People prefer words that are easier to type

When running a test on common baby names, researchers discovered that parents seem to prefer names that can be easily typed with the right hand on a QWERTY (standard) keyboard.

5 Brand New Treatments for Inflammatory Disease

Interesting Research

Inflammation is a protective response that involves immune cells, blood vessels, and molecular mediators. The purpose of inflammation is to eliminate the initial cause of cell injury, clear out necrotic cells and tissues damaged from the original insult and the inflammatory process, and to initiate tissue repair. (Source)

In recent years, many studies have found that acute inflammation can be the root cause of many diseases, including cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, joints breakdown, and more. In fact, some researchers think that depression may be an inflammatory condition. This has prompted researchers to delve into the field of treating and curing inflammation, with 5 notable new treatments developed very recently:

1. Treating Crohn's disease with bone marrow

Most people associate bone marrow transplants with chemotherapy or radiation therapy, but at Fred Hutch's Clinical Research Division, Dr. McDonald and Dr. Georges are pioneering the field by transplanting bone marrow in Crohn's patients. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory disease of the bowels, which is extremely painful and can lead to severe reactions and malnutrition. While the treatment is in its early stages, initial clinical tests seem promising.

2. Regulating the gut microbiome to improve mood and fatigue

A 2015 study found that mice with liver inflammation that exhibited fatigue and anti-social behaviors became more lively and social when treated with anti-inflammatory medication. The implication for humans is that by controlling the microbiome in the gut, we may be able to treat not only diseases but also mental health issues.

3. Alleviate depression with anti-inflammatories

Another research found that some forms of depression are less in the mind and more in the body and are caused by inflammation. The researchers tested children with depression and found that they had higher levels of cytokines and interleukin (molecules the body releases when it's infected or sick) – meaning that using anti-inflammatory drugs may help relieve, and even cure, depression.

4. Using technology to stop inflammation

One of the main causes of acute inflammation is when the vagus nerve, which is in-charge of the inflammatory system, "malfunctions" and produces too much cytokines (that cause inflammation). By using a specialized device, the vagus nerve can be reset and the inflammation process can be stopped.

5. Marvel at the "Marvel Molecule."

Developed by Pfizer in the 1990's, MCC950, also known as the "Marvel Molecule" has come to light again thanks to the researchers at the Trinity College of Dublin's Biomedical Science Institute. The molecule has shown to stop multiple sclerosis and sepsis in mice. It has also shown to be effective in samples taken from humans and is planned to move to clinical trial soon. The potential is great for treatment of diseases such as asthma, MS, gout, atherosclerosis, and more.
