Are under eye circles making you look older than you really are? Are you sick of looking 'zombified' even though you've been getting enough sleep? We feel you. Dark circles are a huge pain because just like that, they add years to your face!
But as they say – to know it is to control it. So, here we fill you in on everything you need to know about dark circles, from how they form to effective ways to treat them!
What are dark circles?
They're actually blood vessels that can be seen through the super-thin layer of skin under your eyes, what is known as the Preorbital skin. The more tiny blood vessels you have closer to the skin's surface, the more obvious they appear. Likewise, the thinner and more translucent your skin is, the more visible these blood vessels and the darker the rings beneath your eyes.
Why do dark circles appear?
Think dark circles only appear when you don't sleep enough? Not true. You can get 'raccoon eyes' from aging, genetics, unruly lifestyle habits, or a combination of the three.
And as your skin ages (naturally, or from the harmful effects of the sun), the layer around your eyes also becomes thinner, allowing the bluish black veins within to show. As if that's not bad enough, the breakdown of collagen also makes your skin less elastic, and consequently, more saggy and puffy. So without proper care, it's easy to look ten years older than you really are.
