[www.keralites.net] 8 Early Warning Signs of Ovarian Cancer

If these signs appear, you shouldn't ignore them

Many people tend to think of cancer as a death sentence. Ovarian cancer is a silent killer with no visible symptoms in the early stages, but that doesn't mean it's not curable. The important thing is to catch it early before it spreads. When the symptoms do begin to show, they can be vague and easily confused with a number of other conditions. Oncology is a well-developed medical field and many cancers are curable with the right treatment at the right time. The healthy thing to do is to keep a balance between denial and hypochondria.

The good news is that there are a number of early warnings signs. Ovarian cancer symptoms only match actual early stage ovarian cancer 1% of the time. While there is no absolutely reliable detection method for early stage ovarian cancer, doctors make use of pelvic examinations, ultrasound scans and blood tests for genetic cancer markers to diagnose the illness. While scientists are busy working at fixing this gap in the medical field, it's important for you to know and listen to your body. This guide will help you discover the risk factors and early warning signs.
Risk Factors
While the cause of ovarian cancer is unknown, certain factors can increase your chances of it developing:

Age: Ovarian cancer tends to strike women over the age of 60 most, with over 50% of all occurrences affecting this age group. Women over the age of 50 are also at a higher risk, although age does not safeguard younger aged women from developing this cancer too, and cases are sometimes found in women in their 20s.
Family history: Genetics can increase the likelihood of a person developing ovarian cancer. A family history of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, or colon cancer strengthens your susceptibility to the illness.  The genes BRCA1 and BRCA2, known as the breast cancer genes, were initially only linked to detecting breast cancer chances, but further research revealed that these genes also indicate ovarian cancer.

Period history: The number of periods an individual has during her lifetime has been shown to correlate with increased chances of the development of ovarian cancer.  Women who began menstruating young, have never given birth, or reached menopause at a later age (after the age of 50) have been found to have a higher risk of getting ovarian cancer than those who experienced less periods of menstruation.
Certain medications: Research has found that having hormone replacement therapy after menopause, or enduring large doses of hormones for fertility treatment, can strengthen the chances of ovarian cancer developing.
Other risk factors that make ovarian cancer more likely include smoking, obesity, use of an IUD (intrauterine device) or polycystic ovary syndrome.
8 Early Warning Signs
One or several of these symptoms offer enough reason for rightful concern. If they persist for longer than two weeks, consult with your physician:
1. Constipation: This can also include other changes in your bowel movements.
2. Pelvic pain: This can range from a feeling of discomfort in the pelvic area, to outright pain. It can also be felt in the abdomen.
3. Frequent, urgent urination: In older women, this can be a sign of weak pelvic floor muscles or a urinary tract infection, but this symptom can also be a sign of ovarian cancer.
4. Swollen or bloated abdomen: Your stomach increases in size, and you might feel particularly bloated along with being full of gas. This one is easily detectable when your clothes begin to feel tighter around your waist and hips, without weight gain elsewhere.

5. Fatigue: You'll have slept enough but still feel overly tired and low in energy.
6. Pain from sexual activity.
7. Low back pain: This one is especially relevant if it starts in the pelvic area.
8. Loss of appetite, feeling full quickly: You might also observe unexplained weight loss.

LEAF THERAPY FOR CANCER & OTHER AILMENTS

To him, curry leaves and ferns are medicines. Eat shoots and leaves for good health, Dr Raj Merchant tells R Nalini.
It began with his chance encounter in Gir forest with a holy man, who fed on a variety of leaves. "The aura of the holy man meditating attracted me," says the therapist, who learnt a lot from the man. "Since ancient times, plants have been used to heal ailments, yet people find it difficult to believe in its curative powers," he says.

Dr Merchant: Turning a new leaf to cure you
HE IS not a qualified allopathic doctor but he treats thyroid and cancer; he is not even a homeopath but he doles out suggestions to balance sugar levels in diabetic patients … all this with just leaves, which has given him the sobriquet of 'Pattiwala Doctor'.
It was a chance encounter with a sanyasi some four decades ago in the Girnar hills that proved to be the turning point for the then young commerce graduate. "I was just in my twenties but was drawn towards him due to his aura. He was a virtual treasure trove of natural healing and initiated me into this therapy," tells the Pattiwala doctor, who says he then started spending time with his Master as and when he could to learn.
My dadiji had diabetic and doctors had advised to ampute her gangrenous foot. But with the leaves that my Guruji gave, she was all right in just six days and there was no need to operate," he says.
And that was the starting point for the sexagenarian, who practiced himself first what he preaches, and as a result still does not have diabetes (his father too had diabetes) or any other ailment, normal these days for his age.
He claims to have treated patients having thyroid, diabetes, asthama, cancer, gall bladder and problems related to eyes, kidney and many other diseases. Quiz him if there had been any complex case, he gestures upwards and says, "By God's grace, it has been a smooth journey till date. One case, however, I would like to point out is of a 20-year-old girl from Bhopal who was suffering from vertebral cancer. "She was so ill, her parents said they cannot even bring her to Mumbai. So they called me and I started advising her on phone. Yesterday, the family came to meet me when they came to know I am here at Indore. The girl is pretty stable now."
The leafs for quick relief
IF YOU are still recovering from chikungunya, eating 100 leaves of tulsi daily should give you quick relief. If you are a diabetic, daily consumption of 200-300 'kadi patta' leaves should reduce your sugar levels substantially.
'Curry leaves' (kadi patta), tulsi leaves, carrot, onion, dhatura … the list goes on. These and hundreds of other shrubs and trees are the simple yet effective weapons with which the naturopath Pattiwala cures his patients. He mixes juice of leaves with water, ghee, honey or alcohol, which is then given to the patient in stages.
Most time the times, the mixture is for oral consumption but in some cases, like slip disc, the patient is given a massage with the mixture.
Times of India
Herbs enough to beat fever and diabetes
Dr Raj Merchant, a Mumbai-based naturopath, says Amba Haldi is a natural pain killer due to its anti-inflammatory properties, and can be used to treat both, internal and external inflammations. It works better if grated together with onion to make a paste that can be consumed or applied.
Here's how Mumbai's green thumbs are beating fever and diabetes
Had Hanuman not found the magical herb Sanjeevani that Hindu mythology believes is the cure for all malady, and healed Laxman, wounded in battle by Ravan's son Indrajeet, the Ramayana would have panned out differently.
Besides the power to turn the plot of an epic around, medicinal herbs can be effective weapons against common ailments, as Mumbaikars are discovering. With the kitchen terrace garden earning more fans thanks to green thumb blogs, everyday sickness — fever, cough and cold, joint pain, cuts and blood pressure — is being tackled with healing herbs that are flourishing in urban balconies.
Preeti Patil, 43, a catering officer at Mumbai Port Trust, has stocked her 10 ft x 3 ft terrace on Dockyard Road with medicinal plants. "I was growing Amba Haldi (mango ginger), a root that looks like ginger but smells like mango, to toss in salads that accompany my meals. When I sprained my ankle, my maid suggested I apply its paste for relief. It was miraculous!" says Patil.
Patil has since then planted Sadafuli leaves (anti-cancerous properties), Adulsa (cough), Tulsi (fever) and lemongrass (headache). Merchant says tea flavoured with lemongrass is as effective in curing a headache as any pill. "A dip in the level of serotonin, a chemical, can trigger headaches. Chemicals in lemongrass boost release of serotonin, relieving pain," he says.
Airoli resident and furniture dealer Julius Rego uses Panphuti to heal cuts and wounds. "Given my profession, I'm prone to cuts. Panphuti paste fights microbes, allergy and bacteria. I believe it was used by soldiers in ancient times," he shares.
Purvita Kapadia prefers to let her body heal naturally, allowing it the chance to manufacture its own antibodies against diseases. Instead of insulin tablets, she convinced her sister-in-law to chew on two leaves of the Insulin plant every day. "It has helped keep her keep sugar levels in check," says a proud Kapadia.
