Dieting Myths Scammers Try to Feed You

Thanks to our comfortable lifestyle and abundance of food rich in sugar, fat and carbohydrates, the citizens of the western world often find themselves a little overweight, with obesity becoming a growing health concern.
Enter the scammers: wanting to make a quick buck, they'll try and sell you miracle pills, special creams from the seeds of a rare plant, revolutionary new powders that stops you from gaining weight and more.
Joining them, you'll find those claiming that a diet of only hand-picked fruit and salt-water is all you need to lose weight (-it isn't).
By exploiting our need to look better, feel healthy and boost our confidence, these people make outrageous promises that have little-to-no hold in reality and can sometimes be downright dangerous!
I decided to compile some of the more common false promises so that you can avoid wasting your time, money and maybe even risking your health:
The 3 Impossibles 
"Lose 2 (or more) pounds per week without exercise or dieting" / "Lose weight no matter what/how much you eat" / "Permanent weight loss, even after you stop using the product"
The process of weight loss is not very complicated, weight gain is most commonly the result of eating more calories than you burn. To lose weight, then, you need to create an energy deficit by eating fewer calories, increasing the number of calories you burn through physical activity, or both. If you're not exercising now, and not keeping a healthy diet, then no pill, cream or anything else will make you burn enough energy that will result in proper weight loss. 
An average person will burn around 1500-2000 calories per day, and unless you maintain a low-calorie diet, or alternatively, incorporate physical exercise to increase your max caloric burn, you will not be losing weight.  
Finally, there's no such thing as "permanent weight loss" if you stop maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Your body gets used to a certain amount of exercise and/or certain amounts of food, and once you no longer follow the familiar pattern – it'll end up reverting back to its old ways and stop burning those carbs.
The Substantially Flawed
 
"Substantial weight loss for all users" / "Substantial weight loss by wearing a product or rubbing it on your skin"
 
Weight loss/gain depends on our metabolism. Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. During this process, calories in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function. 
Even when you're at rest, your body needs energy for all its functions, like breathing, 
blood circulation, adjusting hormone levels, and growing and repairing cells. The number of calories your body uses to carry out these basic functions is known as your basal metabolic rate — what you might call metabolism. Several factors determine your individual basal metabolic rate:
 
Your body size and composition - The bodies of people who are larger or have more muscle burn more calories, even at rest.
 
 
Your gender - Men usually have less body fat and more muscle than do women of the same age and weight, burning more calories.
 
Your age - As you get older, the amount of muscle tends to decrease and fat accounts for more of your weight, slowing down calorie burning.
 
 
The claim that a product or diet works equally for everyone is simply a lie. Human metabolism is an internal process which cannot be substantially affected by applying products to your skin, or wearing one on your person. 
The Safe Block
"Blocking the absorption of fat/calories/carbs" /  "Safely lose more than 3 pounds per week"
Anyone who promises you these things is trying to pull a fast one on you. None of the over-the-counter Fat / Carb / Calorie-blockers can block enough to cause effective weight-loss, and without a healthy lifestyle to accompany these products, their efficiency drops even lower. 
As for promises that you can safely lose more than 3 pounds a week - Research shows that losing 3 or more pounds per week can lead to gallstones and other medical complications, making such claims deceptive and dangerous.
Don't look to dietary supplements for help in burning calories or weight loss. Products that claim to speed up your metabolism are often more hype than help, and some may cause undesirable or even dangerous side effects. 
Dietary supplement manufacturers aren't required by the Food and Drug Administration to prove that their products are safe or effective, so view these products with caution and skepticism, and always let your doctors know about any supplements you take. 
There's no magical way to lose weight. It comes down to physical activity and diet. Take in fewer calories than you burn, and you lose weight.
But if you're worried about your metabolism or you can't seem to lose excess weight despite diet and exercise, talk to your doctor.
Remember: If it sounds too good to be true – it almost always is!

15 Extra Uses for the Banana 

Bananas are known as 'energy bombs' with very high nutritional values. It holds a multitude of vitamins, including vitamin A, vitamin C, many of the vitamin B family, potassium and three natural sugars - Sucrose, fructose and glucose. But if you thought nutrition is where the role of the banana ends, think again... 
1. Shining shoes
If you happen to be out of shoe polish, don't worry. After you've finished eating the banana, use the peel. Remove the remanants of the banana from within and then rub the inside of the peel on your shoe. To finish, use a paper towel.
2. Kick your smoking habit
The banana can help people stop smoking. The vitamins B12, B6 and the minerals potassium and magnesium found in the banana, help the body overcome the effects of nicotine withdrawal. 

3. Treating Bunions 
Vinegar and cosmetic creams can dry painful and ugly bunions, but when these aren't available or too expensive, a banana will also do the trick. Squish the banana and rub it on the affected area. You can use the peel to rub it on the skin, while some wrap the inner side of the peel around the bunion and leave it for the night.

4. Soothing stings and bites
The sugars in the banana peel will sooth an itchy and annoying mosquito bite, as well as the redness that accompnies it.

5. A solution for Aphids
Aphids can be very annoying when they attack your flowers and garden. Take a few pieces of banana peel and bury them about 1-2 cm deep around the base of the plant. Do NOT use the fruit itself, or else you will attract even more hungry insects.

6. Eases heartburn
The banana has natural anti-oxidants that may relieve your heartburn. Eat a banana to cool down.

7. Tenderizing meat
If you want to tenderize meat while thawing it, wrap it in banana leaves. This also works for fish. While cooking, add a ripe banana to help them soften, and add a sweet flavor while you're at it.

8. Relieving PMS pain
The B vitamins found in the banana regulate the levels of sugar in the blood, which directly affects the general feeling and mood. The potassium in the fruit neutralizes the swelling and the liquid build-up.

9. Make that hangover go away
After a harsh night of drinking, boil a cup of water and put 2 banana peels in it. Wait for it to cool and drink.

10. Treating bloody hemorrhoids
Steam 2 bananas with the peel, until they soften. Eat on an empty stomach, morning and evening, until relief is achieved.

11. Improving your quality of sleep
Bananas come with a great vitamin B6 boost that helps maintain a normal and functional sleep/Wake mechanism. Eat a small banana every day to get quality sleep.

12. Substitute for vitamin D
Research shows that a lack in vitamin D (the one we get from being exposed to sunlight) is a big contributor to depression. Since during winter this is hard to get, it is recommended to get your vitamin D elsewhere. Other than milk, fish and avocado, banana is a great source for that.

13. Return moisture to a tired face
To moisturize your dry skin, use a banana paste to relax the skin. 

Here is a simple recipe: 
2 spoons of almond oil
1 ripe banana
1 Egg yolk

Mash the banana with a fork and remove the thick pieces. Add egg yolk and almond oil and mix well. Wash your face and dry with a clean towel. Then put the mix on your face and leave for 20 minutes. Wash your face with cold water and dry well.

14. Helps fight anemia
The vitamin B family found in bananas encourage the creation of hemoglobin and help prevent and treat anemia.

15. Whitening teeth
Despite their yellow color, bananas can actually help whiten your teeth. Research shows that the minerals in the banana peel, such as potassium and bromine, help whiten the teeth naturally without leaving damage.

Cut the peel to little pieces, rub the inner part of the banana in circular motions on the teeth for 2-3 minutes and then don't touch for 15 minutes (don't eat, drink or rinse). Then rinse well. In a few weeks of this daily treatment you will see great results.

5 Foods That'll Help You Sleep Tonight 

Lack of sleep can ruin a lot of things: Our mood, our patience, our focus and our sense of enjoyment in life. We've all had those sleepless nights. But taking sleeping pills is usually a problematic strategy, because they don't give you the same natural sleep that strengthens you, and they can become quite addictive, until you can't sleep without them. Better to eat something that will help you fall into a relaxing, renewing, deep sleep.
Here are five recommended foods to put you to bed:

 
Frozen Bananas
Frozen bananas become a thick and tasty ice-cream. All you need is the right technique of consistent mixing. The idea is to mix for several minutes, until the bananas become a creamy delight. Add a handful of chopped peanuts for an extra tryptophan boost and you have a great combination. Not only will the potassium in the bananas help you fall asleep faster, it can also prevent you waking up for no reason in the middle of the night.
 
Low Fat Popcorn

The carbs in popcorn will help your body better utilize a chemical called tryptophan. This chemical is known to relieve tension and put you to sleep. This happens because the tryptophan is converted to serotonin, which is responsible for putting you to sleep and waking you every day. Since a heavy meal about 2 hours before sleep can actually keep you awake at times, a low calorie popcorn bowl is a recommended treat for late night snacks. If you want to add some flavor, we suggest some curry powder or garlic, instead of butter.
