[www.keralites.net] Are Vitamins really a Healthy choice?

Are Vitamins Really A Healthy Choice?
Millions of people around the world open their morning by popping a handful of vitamins into their mouth. They do this because they were advised to take a certain vitamin by their doctor, or have a friend or relative that swears by their daily vitamins. But over the past few years, there is increasing evidence that many vitamins may not provide the health benefits they claim to their consumers, and in some cases can actually have negative effects on your health.
Here are 5 vitamin supplements that harm much more than they help!
Vitamin A
Vitamin A, or the carrot vitamin, is traditionally noted for its abilities to improve and sharpen vision and for its cancer fighting abilities. Yet recent studies show that vitamin A cannot successfully combat cancer and may in fact have dangerous side effects likenausea, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite and dizziness, among others.

carrot

Research at the National Institutes of Health in the United States actually found that smokers who consumer vitamin A in pill form dramatically increased their chances of contracting lung cancer. So, instead of popping a pill, we recommend eating crisp and crunchy carrots whenever you can!
Multivitamins
The "one-a-day" vitamin was introduced in America about 60 years ago as a way to make up for vitamins and nutrients that were missing from an average person's diet. They usually contain about 10 vitamins and 10 minerals, besides calcium, and claim to do amazing things like build up your immune system, prevent chronic diseases, and act as a supplement for those that don't eat a full serving of fruits and vegetables each day. However, there are many hidden additives, like titanium dioxide and magnesium stearate, in these multivitamins that could actually darken your bill of health.
multivitamin
In a 1986 study on 38,772 Japanese women, scientist Jaakko Mursu found that the risk of death actually increased with the long-term use of multivitamins. Laboratory tests found that multivitamins contain more artificial ingredients and coloring than they do actual vitamins, as well as sugars and other dangerous preservatives. But besides the fact that the pills have been proven to be unhealthy, they are ridiculously expensive! Some of the cheaper brands cost up to 30 dollars, and many others up to 200 dollars.
Vitamin C
This is the most popular vitamin supplement because it is believed to give our immune systems an instant push. However, this is a myth that needs busting.
orange
In 1970, Linus Pauling concluded in a famous study that huge doses of vitamin C could prevent the common cold. This assertion has been proven false over the years, even in cases when individuals consume 2000 milligrams a day. The only thing that vitamin C can really prevent against is scurvy, once a common disease among seamen that were cut off from fresh fruits and vegetables. So unless on navigating the seas for a month, you really don't need that daily vitamin C supplement.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is another infamous anti-cancer agent that has become increasingly popular. In a recent study on 35,533 men, it was found that taking vitamin E actually increased the occurrence of prostate cancer. Also, in a review of John Hopkins University it was shown that in general the risk of death is higher in individuals who too vitamin E.
avocado
With studies like these, it is best to toss any vitamin E supplements into the trash. Avocadoes, sweet potatoes, and more are all delicious, natural sources of vitamin E.
fish
Vitamin Bs
We are always hearing about supplements for meat andfish for those that don't get enough of them in their daily diet. But these vitamins are some of the most dangerous out there because, in their artificial forms, they can cause the most serious and long-term damage to our health.
In a report by the National Institutes of Health it was found that you cannot get too much vitamin B6 from food, but when it is consumed in supplement form for a year or longer, it can cause serious nerve damage and possibly even cause individuals to lose control of their bodily movement! That said, make a point of eating fish or meat at least 3-4 times per week and you will be better off without a B6 supplement.

[www.keralites.net] Excuses....Excuses...Excuses

 Excuses…Excuses…Excuses
The ideal exercise for everyone is walking, for a longer, healthier life.
1. The safest and best form of exercise.
2. Ideal for developing long term cardiovascular fitness and improving respiratory efficiency.
3. The perfect activity for weight loss and burning away fat and unwanted calories.
II Ideal for conditioning the hips, thighs and stomach muscles.
The ideal way to beat the stress – positive approach for a healthy body and mind.
Appropriate for young and old.
Walking is cheap, flexible in time, speed and location to suit any age.
But there are some who are lazy, feel it's a hard work and put forth many excuses:
Exercise! – that sounds like hard work for me.
It seems that many people do think that exercise is too much like hard work. They may even think of it as an X-rated activity – xercise! – Something best to be avoided. This is true for many people who start out on strenuous exercise programs, injure themselves and give it all up, but if you start out with a moderate program like brisk fitness walking and build up gradually, then you will enjoy it and you won't want to give up.
Exercise! – I haven't got the time. I am too busy.
Just v20 to 30 minutes fitness walking three to four times a week will give you all the long-term fitness and cardiovascular benefits that you need, and help you keep slim. Once you start to feel the benefits, and walking becomes a regular habit, you will want to find the time to get out. Try getting up earlier on the morning to walk, walk during lunch times; walk in tour work breaks instead of drinking coffee or smoking; walk in the evening instead of settling down in a chair in front of television.
Exercise! – I need relaxation, not exercise.
Fitness walking is best form of relaxation around. It relieves stress by helping you to get away from telephones and all the noise and distractions of life, and it helps you to take your mind off your problems and rediscover an inner peace. After a session of brisk fitness walking you will feel calm and relaxed and you will want to find time regularly to get out and recapture this feeling. Indeed, studies have shown exercise such as this can lift depression and help you to sleep better.
Exercise – I'd be embarrassed.
We have all seen the ardent jogger pounding his way along the pavements, puffing and panting as though his life depended on it; and we have all seen the new jogger out with a shiny new shell-suit and training shoes – and we have thought 'rather you than me.' So why not try fitness walking? All you need is a pair of comfortable walking shoes and off you go. There is no need to be embarrassed – you are going to be walking a little faster than other people, but you will look and feel better doing it. And, in the stakes of fitness and health, you will be leaving far behind. Remember fitness walking is not a sport – it's an enjoyable exercise.
Exercise! – I'm too old for it.
You are never too old to start exercising. Provided you take into account any diagnosed medical problems and consult with your doctor first, then you can start out on a program of fitness walking and build up gradually to an aerobic conditioning program that will benefit you for the rest of your life.
Exercise! – I am too fat. I would rather diet.
You may not realise it, but you will benefit more from a regular program of exercise like fitness walking, together with low-fat high-fibre nutritious diet, than you will from dieting alone. Fitness walking will help you slim and stay slim by burning up the calories. If you burn more calories than you eat, your body will begin to use its own energy stores and fat will start disappear.
Exercise – That sounds boring.
It's not that we don't try to exercise – we do. We just give up too soon because we often forget that there are ways to make exercise fun. Studies show that one out of every two people who start an exercise program drop out within the first six months and half of those quit during the first week. This is where fitness walking scores. Fitness walking is fun. After a short time, you will feel great; have increased energy, improved concentration and heightened sense of well-being.
With loving regards

[www.keralites.net] Early Detection Diabetes

Early Detection of Diabetes and How to Reverse
Diabetes is one of the most prevalent new epidemics in the world, and one of the fastest growing diseases. One of the main reasons for this is the unhealthy lifestyle and habits that are forming by modern living.
It is of immense importance that everyone is aware of the signs of type II diabetes, because the best way to avoid the disease is to make an early detection and engage in actions that will prevent the diabetes from developing.
The general term for these signs is 'pre-diabetes'. The blood sugar levels are not yet on a full blown diabetes level, and can still be reversed.
So first, know the symptoms:
* Feeling thirsty even after drinking a lot
* Feeling weak even after resting for a sufficient amount of hours.
* Urinating more frequently, especially at night.
* Gaining weight despite no change in diet and even with
exercising.
* Feeling hungry again minutes after eating.
* Skin infections take a very long time to heal.
* Blurred night vision.

Tests that help in early detection:
If you recognize in yourself two or more of these symptoms, then it is crucial that you have yourself tested to see if you are indeed on the path to diabetes. There are basically 2 tests you can take:
1. Fasting Plasma Glucose Test:
This test requires you to fast for about 8-10 hours. It would be best to give your blood sample in the early morning before breakfast. This test checks your how well your body maintains glucose levels and interacts with it. If your results show that your blood glucose levels are between 100-125 ml/dl, then you are either pre-diabetic or already suffering from early diabetes. If they blood sugar levels are less than 100 ml/dl, then you are safe from the disease.

2. Oral Glucose Test
Two hours after your breakfast or lunch, the lab technician will take a blood sample. If the test results show your blood sugar level between 140-199 ml/dl, then you are pre-diabetic. If it is less than 140 - you are free from it.
Don't panic if your test results reveal that you are a pre-diabetic, there are still ways to reverse the process.
How to Reverse the Symptoms of Diabetes:
Many will suggest you start taking medication to solve your pre-diabetes problem. While these medications will lower your blood-sugar levels, they are not a long term solution. A long term reversal of the symptoms requires:
1. Daily exercise:
If you have pre-diabetic symptoms, it's crucial that you start exercising every day. This will help your muscles to become less dependant on insulin, and will help maintain your blood sugar level. Put aside 30-45 minutes a day for exercise.
2. Watch you carb consumption.
To reverse the symptoms, cut down on your simple carbs, as the body will break them down to fats and energy that will be converted to fat. You need complex carbs like multi-grain bread, wheat bread, brown pasta, brown rice and boiled potatos. Exclude white bread, candy, chocolate, pasta, rice, cookies and cakes from your daily consumption.
3. Drink LOTS of water.
I can't stress this enough - stay hydrated. You need to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day to wash the toxins from your body through urination.
4. Change to a high fiber diet
Fiber doesn't only bring down your blood sugar levels but will also help you lose weight. A high fiber diet with plenty of water will make you feel full without raising your blood sugar levels. Legumes, raw fruit and vegetables have a high amount of fiber in them.
5. Don't Let Stress Get to You.
This may be the hardest one. You must avoid high stress levels if you wish to reverse your diabetes symptoms. Practice yoga, try meditating and get plenty of sleep.
These are the natural ways to fight early diabetes, and have no side effects. So make sure you stick to a healthy diet, daily exercise and watch what you eat to keep diabetes away.

[www.keralites.net] From Singapore to Almora, Abhishant Pant has survived without cash, and he wants to continue

From Singapore to Almora, Abhishant Pant has survived without cash, and he wants to continue in that state all his life.

Abhishant Pant, 36, a FinTech professional, has been living in a cashless state of mind for several months now.

While Indians rush to banks and ATMs to deposit/exchange no-longer-legal-tender Rs 500/Rs 1,000 bank notes and withdraw cash, Pant is chilling at home. He only had loose change amounting to Rs 546 in his 'piggy bank' when the PM declared the note ban.

"I was giving a lecture on payments at an IIT conference in February when someone asked whether it is possible to live without cash in this era of digital payments. I felt it was possible and decided to execute the idea myself," he says.

He was to travel to Singapore and felt he would not face any problems in that nation, arriving without cash in hand.

When Abhishant wrote about his experience, Cashless in Singapore and learning for India on LinkedIn, readers said it was possible to do so in Singapore, but not in India.

Abhishant took up the challenge and on March 13, vowed to never use cash and only opt for digital payments.

"There are 18 kinds of services that any middle class Indian needs. I told my house maid, newspaper vendor, dhobi etc that I would not pay them in cash and their payments would be transferred to their bank accounts," he says.

It was difficult to convince them, but they finally agreed. But this was in Mumbai, India's financial capital. What about remote corners of the country?

Abhishant tried his cashless agenda in Almora, Uttarakhand.

"I had to pay someone, but he had no bank account. I then asked him for his son's bank account. Luckily, the son had an account and I showed the elderly gentleman how to transfer money from his mobile phone to his son's account," Abhishant recalls.

"The villager was so happy to see this technology. 'Aisa bhi hota hai? Meri bhasha mein bhi hota hai? (Do such systems also work in my (Hindi) language?)' he asked," Abhishant remembers.

Then, the elderly villager quipped, 'You are a rich man and have an expensive phone. You can do such things, not us.'

"I told him he didn't need a smartphone for this. He could pay through a mobile wallet from any phone. I showed him Airtel Money, it was in Hindi. I told him he did not need the Internet to use it. These are telecom-based wallets and one can send money to any bank account 24x7, 365 days," says Abhishant.

While eating bhelpuri in Delhi, Abhishant "recharged the bhelpuri vendor's mobile with Rs 50 talktime."

"He was happy to receive the digital payment," Abhishant recalls.

"Anyone doing business or selling anything has a mobile phone," he says. "So you can recharge their phone and, thereby, pay for the goods or services you avail of."

But he must have missed having cash sometimes?

"Yes," Abhishant acknowledges, "I am a foodie. In Mumbai, there are iconic eateries like Ramashray, Mani's, Panshikar or A-1 Samosa. They don't accept digital payments. But then, as Shah Rukh Khan says in Om Shanti Om, 'agar kisi cheez ko shiddat se chaho to puri qayanat tumko ussey milaney ki koshish mein lag jaati hai, and I found a way out."

"I found the Faroma app, which delivers food from these eateries at your doorstep. Believe me, digital payments work and work wonderfully," he says.

Ask if this is not an elitist way of living, considering that 220 million Indians live on Rs 31.77 per day and do not have bank accounts, and Abhishant replies, "The answer is the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. If you say there are 220 million people in India who do not have a bank account, I have two options: One is to wait for these 220 million to open a bank account, or make them do it."

"My maid lives in a chawl, just 100 metres away from a bank. But she opened a bank account only after I told her she would get her payment in digital mode. It took her 28 years to reach a bank, located only 100 metres away from her home."

Is it not dictatorial to force poor people to open bank accounts when they may not want to?

"In the greater common good, challenges will always arise. China might not be a perfect country, but it is the best example in such a case. Millions moved above the poverty line in China within two decades. Today, the Chinese have good food to eat and good clothes to wear and, frankly speaking, a dictatorial attitude is good if it is going to work for the larger good, or how else things will work?" Abhishant asks.

Supporting Prime Minister Modi's Jan Dhan scheme, he says, "In the last two years, 25.51 crore (255.1 million) bank accounts were opened. And, if, say, my maid opens a bank account, she may get easy loans from banks. Banks give loans on the assessment of the ability to pay. Now, imagine if every house that she works in transfers her salary to her bank account, she can get easy access to credit at 12%, instead of paying 24% or 48% to a moneylender."

So, why he didn't apply for a job in the Prime Minister's Office to implement Modi's vision?

"I am a Left-leaning person by ideology," he laughs. "But on this issue I support the PM."

"Mark my words, 10 years later, Prime Minister Modi will be known for his Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana."
