[www.keralites.net] 15 Health Benefits of Broccoli

15 Health Benefits of Broccoli!
As a kid, I used to hate broccoli. Whenever my mother would cook it, I would make up all sorts of elaborate fibs hoping she wouldn't make me eat it (although they never worked). But when I became an adult, I grew to love this green vegetable and enjoy it in a variety of dishes. I've since discovered that broccoli is not just healthy, it's 'super' healthy - and I wanted to share the good news with you today.
Interesting Broccoli Facts:
Broccoli was first cultivated in Italy back in the 6th-century B.C.E., and its name comes from the Italian broccoli meaning "the flowering crest of a cabbage". The broccoli is a member of the cabbage family, along with the radish, turnip, mustard, and more. It was introduced to the United States by Italian immigrants in the 1920s and wasn't wildly known until then. 77% of the world's broccoli is produced in China and India. The part of the broccoli we eat is the flower and the stem.

broccoli health benefits
Health Benefits of Broccoli:
1. It protects your skin from aging
Broccoli is rich in antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, which reduces and prevents the damages caused by free radicals, such as pigmentation and wrinkling. In addition, the health content of Vitamins B and E aids in giving your skin a healthy glow.
2. It protects you from UV radiation
Using broccoli extract instead of sunscreen has been shown to provide a better level of protection than sunscreen. While sunscreen absorbs UV radiation, preventing it from reaching your skin, broccoli extract gets absorbed into your skin, defending it from the inside-out. It was also shown that its effects can last up to three days while sunscreen is only good for several hours at most.
3. It's good for pregnant women
During pregnancy, women need to consume large amounts of folate, and broccoli has it in abundance. Folate helps prevent neurological and spinal defects in the fetus.
4. It helps control diabetes
Broccoli contains chromium, which is effective in regulating insulin levels, and thus keeping diabetes symptoms at bay.
5. It can prevent anemia
Rich in iron and folic acid, broccoli is one of the best foods for preventing and treating anemia, as well as improving your levels of hemoglobin.

6. It regulates blood pressure
The high levels of calcium, potassium, omega-3 and magnesium help improve blood flow in the circulatory system, and even reduce LDL levels ("bad cholesterol").
7. It boosts your immunity
Your immune system needs nutrients such as trace minerals, zinc, and beta-carotene – all of which are quite common in broccoli.
8. It's also good for your bones
The zinc, magnesium, and calcium, along with Vitamin K and phosphorus help prevent bone-related ailments and strengthens the bones.
9. It promotes eye health
Broccoli contains antioxidants such as lutein and carotenoid, which help in deterring cataracts and macular degeneration. It also contains Vitamin A, which is known to aid in improving vision in low-light conditions, as well as discerning colors.
10. It's great for weight-loss
Broccoli is low in calories, making it ideal for dieting.

11. It is also an effective detoxifier
Your body needs to be able to get rid of waste and contaminants, and that's where broccoli comes into play: containing rare nutrients like glucobrassicin, glucoraphanin, and gluconasturtiin, all of which are effective in eliminating toxins.
12. It makes your hair shine
The erucic acids in broccoli give your hair a lovely, natural shine.
13. It takes care of your heart
All of the amazing nutrients we've discussed help prevent damage to your blood vessels, reducing the risk of a stroke or heart attack.

14. It fights cancer
The glucoraphanin in broccoli can be converted in the body into a cancer-fighting chemical called sulforaphane, and the indole-3 carbinol helps reduce the risk of breast, cervical and prostate cancer.
15. It even helps your hair grow
Vitamins A and C aid in moisturizing your scalp, while the calcium in the broccoli helps strengthen your hair follicles.

[www.keralites.net] FACEBOOK MAKES YOU DEPRESSED

Facebook May Make You Depressed: Study
HOUSTON: Frequent Facebook use may be associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms, a new study has warned.
Some users may find themselves spending quite a bit of time viewing Facebook and may inevitably begin comparing what is happening in their lives to the activities and accomplishments of their friends.
This kind of social comparison paired with the amount of time spent on Facebook may be linked to depressive symptoms, researchers said.
"Although social comparison processes have been examined at length in traditional contexts, the literature is only beginning to explore social comparisons in online social networking settings," said Mai-Ly Steers, a doctoral candidate in social psychology at the University of Houston (UH).
Steers conducted two studies to investigate how social comparison to peers on Facebook might impact users' psychological health.
Both studies provide evidence that Facebook users felt depressed when comparing themselves to others.
"It doesn't mean Facebook causes depression, but that depressed feelings and lots of time on Facebook and comparing oneself to others tend to go hand in hand," said Steers.
The first study found an association between time spent on Facebook and depressive symptoms for both genders.
However, the results demonstrated that making Facebook social comparisons mediated the link between time spent on Facebook and depressive symptoms for men only..
Similarly, the second study found a relationship between the amount of time spent on Facebook and depressive symptoms was mediated by social comparisons on Facebook. Unlike the first study, gender did not moderate these associations.
"One danger is that Facebook often gives us information about our friends that we are not normally privy to, which gives us even more opportunities to socially compare," Steers said.
"You can't really control the impulse to compare because you never know what your friends are going to post. In addition, most of our Facebook friends tend to post about the good things that occur in their lives, while leaving out the bad," Steers said.
"If we're comparing ourselves to our friends' 'highlight reels,' this may lead us to think their lives are better than they actually are and conversely, make us feel worse about our own lives," said Steers.
Steers said that people afflicted with emotional difficulties may be particularly susceptible to depressive symptoms due to Facebook social comparison after spending more time on medium.
For already distressed individuals, this distorted view of their friends' lives may make them feel alone in internal struggles, which may compound their feelings of loneliness and isolation.

[www.keralites.net] 12 tips from Grand Mother

12 Tips I Got from My Grandmother
My beloved grandmother, may she rest in peace, used to carry an old notebook with her wherever she went. She would fill the notebook with beautiful thoughts and advice she got from wise people. Throughout my childhood I would see her writing things down in that little notebook. I always thought they were her secrets, but when she was on her deathbed, she called me over and shared her old notebook with me. The pieces of advice I found in that notebook changed my life, which made me want to share them with you, in hopes it would do the same. These are the things my grandmother taught me before she passed away…
Granny's Tips
1. Accept things with love and understanding
No matter where you are, or what you're doing, always believe that there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Never expect, assume, or demand. Do the best you can to control your circumstances, and learn to accept that you can't always control everything. Once you've done all that is in your power, if it's meant to happen – it will.
2. Life CAN be simple
Even though you often feel like life is too complicated, it can always be simple. All you need to do is focus on one thing at a time. You don't have to do it all, and you don't have to do it right now. Be present, be active, do the best that you can. Whatever you put into life – life will hand back to you, with interest.
3. Don't change for other people
Make people accept you the way you are, or not accept you at all. Always say what you really think, even if it's not the popular opinion. When you're true to yourself, you add beauty to the world – beauty that was missing. You should stay in line, just make sure it's YOUR line.
4. You're not who you were – and that's okay
You've been through a lot in life. You've studied, been hurt, and changed. Every day we learn something new which changes us in some way or another. Sometimes we realize we're not who we used to be, but that's perfectly normal. Everybody changes. In your life, people will point out the changes, and all you need to do is tell them "Of course I've changed, and so have you. Everybody changes."
5. Everything that happens is for the best
Be it significant or otherwise, joyous or sad, anything that happens will end up being in your favor. Everything that happens to us builds us and helps us grow. Life will take you places, show you things, heal you and make you into a better person. Don't be afraid to try or even to fail, in the end, everything is just a small part of life's larger plan to turn you into whom you're supposed to be.
6. Choose happiness, not wealth
Many people live their lives believing that money will make them happy, but the pursuit of wealth is devoid of meaning. Every choice you make, be sure to consider your happiness, not your bank account. In this way, when you've reached old age, you'll know the true value of things, not their monetary value. In the end, you'll understand that the best things in life are things that money can't buy – love and friendship.
7. Decide to be positive
One of the most important things you should understand about life is that if you're not happy, it is not the circumstances that are to blame, but your decision to be unhappy. Every time life places obstacles in your path, give life a big grin, accept the obstacle's existence and overcome it with joy. Make the decision to be happy, stand by your decisions and do whatever is in your power to keep them. This is the true secret to happiness.
8. Give the people you love your full attention
We can get used to being surrounded by loved ones and start taking them for granted. When you ask someone close to you how they are, don't accept an "okay", look into their eyes and ask them about their day, and how they feel. If you feel that you only have friends that remember you when they need something, don't worry, be happy that you're a source of light and hope for them.
9. Learn to set a loved one free
At times, we need to set a loved one free to allow them to grow and evolve. Every little sprout must leave the greenhouse and be planted in a larger pot to grow to its full size and bloom. It is not what you do for your loved ones that will help them grow, but rather what you taught them and how they use that knowledge.
10. Sometimes, you need to leave people behind
Sadly, not all our friends help us become better people. In some cases, friends can keep us stunted, not out of malice, but because they want to keep you down at their level. Learn to tell when this happens and stick only to friends that help you grow, lift you up, and inspire you to be who you really are.
11. Some things you only understand when you're older
In the end, people will judge you according to your actions, that's why instead of trying to impress and please everyone, follow your heart and do what you want to do, without fear. Remember that it's better to remember something and say "I can't believe I did it!" rather than "I wish I did it…"
12. Stop looking for a happy ending
We humans tend to search for some happy ending in whatever happens to us. We want a sense of closure and completion, but sometimes it's simply not how life is. If you feel like you've been searching for that happy ending for too long, you may need to, instead, search for a new beginning. Never be afraid to leave everything and start anew, you still have time, no matter what your age may be. Aspire to make the most out of whatever time you have on this planet.
This was my grandma's advice to me. It's changed my life, and I hope it'll be able to do the same for you. Rest in peace, Nana.

[www.keralites.net] Rahul Prasad - 24-Yr-Old Guy From Delhi Adopted An Entire Village In Karnataka [1 Attachment]

Rahul Prasad - 24-Yr-Old Guy From Delhi Adopted An Entire Village In Karnataka To Bring About Change. Bhadrapura, a small village 3km off Mysuru Road, in Ramanagara district of Karnataka.

4 years back when Rahul first visited the village as a part of a medical camp for children. He and a few other volunteers went there with toothbrushes, soaps and other material for its "Hakki Pikki" tribal people and took classes on hygiene.

The Initiative
After taking many such hygiene camps, Rahul realized that nothing had changed. The village needed more than soap and toothpaste. It needed a continuous engagement to bring in positive results. So he "adopted the village" along with its 140 families with an aim of developing it into a smart village. He intended to do this by improving the quality of living conditions of villagers.

Rahul's organization "Juvenile Care Charitable Trust" works for the upliftment of underprivileged children. It has signed an agreement with the jurisdictional Manchanayakanahalli panchayat development officer and taken up work for welfare activities. While Rahul regularly visits his village, his volunteers drop in during weekends to participate in welfare activities.

Rahul's work
Rahul and the other volunteers have managed to figure out 3 major health concerns for the village:

  • Lack of hygiene despite the village being within 50km of IT City.
  • Clogged roadside drains turning into breeding e grounds for mosquitoes.
  • Open defecation which is still a reality.

The village is in a pathetic condition. The nearest hospital is about 8km away! There is no denying fact that Rahul and his team is doing miracles in this remote tribal village. They collect and distribute clothes for the villagers, especially for the pregnant women. His team is also looking at alternative power sources such as piezoelectric generators, by installing sensors below the main road. There are also plans to improve connectivity to the village by setting up startups here to create jobs.

Acknowledgements
Last March, Rahul was presented the prestigious UN Karmaveer Chakra Award and REX Global Fellowship, instituted by the Indian Confederation of NGOs in association with the United Nations, a national medallion for proactive voluntary action. All these at the age of 24!
