Chennai: Over the past five months, an arm of the Art of Living has been working quietly on reviving 10 ponds along the OMR that come under Zone 15 (Sholinganallur) of the Corporation of Chennai.  This includes 4 ponds in Semmencherry, 3 in Thoraipakkam and 2 each in Karapakkam and Sholinganallur wards. 

 

Volunteers turned up in good strength for the weekly pond cleaning drive, working for more than three hours to remove 1 tonne of solid waste from the Karapakkam Karyam pond along the OMR.  Students from IIT Madras joined volunteers from Art of Living on the drive. with a few from Lioness Club also chipping in. 

 

The plastic waste from the pond was segregated and will be shredded and used for laying roads.  The other wastes included bottles, clothes, paper products, etc.

 

The programme had started with an SOS from the Corporation Zone 197 when the AoL arrested the death of fishes in Sengeniamman temple in Nilankarai through enzyme treatment.

 

The programme to clean several water bodies in the City is a combination of pond cleaning, tree plantation and awareness creation.  The programme beings with a recce of the pond and the safety of volunteers is ensured before taking up cleaning, besides providing tools and orientating the volunteers with specific methods and techniques for efficient working.  Local corporation offices also support the programme.

 

Chennai is a city of extreme water related calamities year after year with deadly floods during the rainy season and severe droughts during summer.  Rampant loss of waterbodies to urbanisation, unauthorised encroachments, unchecked pollution and poor maintenance of ponds and lakes have caused this terrible impact on nature and the city.

 

The AoL, with a proven model to rejuvenate water bodies across India, has come up with this sustained initiative.  After consultations with civic agencies, AoL got approval from Corporation of Chennai to revive its water bodies across the city.

 

The holistic programme is expected to produce sustained results in 423 waterbodies in the city.

 

The scope of the cleaning and restoration programme includes — Enzyme treatment of pond water to clean the dirty water and remove the algae; desilting the pond and strengthening its bund to increase storage; removing solid waste and weeds from the pond to increase oxygen content and remove toxins; planning trees along the bund to increase green cover and improve the biodiversity and extensive awareness campaigns for active involvement of local community and sustenance of the programme.

How to Treat Excess Stomach Gas & Bloating!
A large percentage of the population suffers from stomach gas from time to time, yet it's rarely discussed, usually because we're too embarrassed to say we're feeling gassy. Nevertheless, stomach gas and bloating is becoming more prevalent due to modern food groups which encourage the build-up of gas in our system, causing a very uncomfortable feeling, and a lot of pain.
Causes of stomach gas build-up
Gas is mainly formed due to small fragmented stool as a result of eating a refined diet lacking in vegetable fiber. These fragmented stools remain in the colon for too long, allowing colonic bacteria to ferment them. On the other hand, a high fiber diet will produce bulky stool, causing very little gas to be formed.

Symptoms of stomach gas:
• Frequent passing of gas
• Feeling bloated
• Loss of appetite
• Abdomen feels 'tight'
• Belching
• Jabbing chest pain
• Getting rid of the excess stomach gas
1. Lie down or try a different position
Lie down and keep your head elevated as this position will cause the discomfort to pass in a few minutes. Remain in this position until the discomfort you're feeling is gone. You can lie down on your side, but still keep your head elevated.
If you are in distress, you can try to curl up so your head is touching the floor and your rear is in the air, this will encourage the passing of gas from your system.
Of course, when you are trying to push the gas out of your abdomen, make sure to do so on an empty stomach, or over a toilet.
2. Drink more

Having excess gas in your stomach is usually a sign of poor digestion. Drinking plenty of fluid helps move the undigested remnants of the food from the colon. This is especially true if you've eaten a lot of fiber rich foods, which encourage undigested food particles to accumulate in the colon. So drink up.
Hot liquids help the most, try herbal tea, but even coffee will help get that gas moving.
3. Add mustard

Mustard is said to decrease the amount of gas in the body as well as preventing its build-up, so try adding it to one of your daily meals.
4. Baking Soda

Add a spoonful of baking soda to a cup of hot water and mix well. Drink this every couple of hours for quick relief.
5. Add Indian spices

Turmeric, cumin and cardamom are known to aid good digestion.
6. Add ginger

Adding ginger to your food or chewing on the root will offer quick relief and aid your digestion.
7. Certain fruit can help

Drink lemon juice or other citrus fruit juices. The papaya is a wonderful fruit to eat when bloated, and is one of the best means for getting rid of gas quickly.
8. Avoid carbonated drinks

Consuming carbonated drinks is a big no-no if you want to decrease the amount of gas in the body. Drinking these will lead to an increase in gas and may also lead to chest pain.

When Lower Back Pain is a Cause for Concern!
Generally speaking, lower back pain always seems worse than it actually is. And while an MRI and x-ray for low back pain may seem like a good idea, they are surprisingly unreliable. Firstly, because things like bulging discs aren't a major cause of concern, secondly, back pain tends to go away on its own and third, trigger points, or muscle knots are common and can be intense but aren't dangerous. More often than not, most patients are better off when they feel confident about these things. In fact, rational confidence is a huge factor in back pain. Though, most healthcare professionals continue to perpetuate the idea of fragile backs.
Nevertheless there are alarming causes of back pain, though they are rare. In such instances, back pain may be a warning sign of cancer or an autoimmune disease. It could also be associated with spinal cord damage. Among those over the age of 55, about one in twenty cases turns out to be a fracture, whereas one in hundred are more ominous.
Still, regardless of the seriousness of your back pain it can suck the joy out of your days for weeks, months or possibly years. Low back pain is classified as ominous when it is caused by a spinal cord trauma, or a progressive disease that can be deadly. Fortunately, such instances are rare.

So, what are the worst possible causes of back pain?
1. Cancer: Usually classified as a tumor in or near the spine. Still, many kinds of cancer can cause different forms of back pain. The pain generally grows steadily and is mostly unaffected by position and activity. They also tend to get worse with weight bearing and at night and usually come with other signs of being unwell.
2. Cauda equina syndrome: Classified as a pinching of the lowest part of the spinal cord. Symptoms usually include difficulty to pass urine, fecal incontinence, numb groin and weak legs. It is caused by a ruptured disc, trauma, cancer or an infection.
3. Spinal infection: Classified as an infection in or near the spinal structures. This can be hard to detect, often for a long time, but usually there's a well-defined tender spot which then develops into a deep constant pain and a rigid spine. Sometimes fever and illness may be present, but not always.
4. Abdominal aneurysm: Classified as a ballooning of a large artery next to the spine. This mostly occurs in people at risk of heart disease, as well as people who are older, heavier, hypertensive smokers and diabetes patients.
5. Ankylosing spondylitis: Classified as inflammatory arthritis of the spine and the pelvis, mostly. Symptoms include long term back pain that starts well before middle age and progresses slowly and erratically. It also tends to improves with activity but not rest and prolonged morning stiffness. It is also more common in men.

Furthermore, there are two back pain situations that you should take seriously right away and without delay. They may be classified as medical emergencies. While they may not necessarily mean that something is horribly wrong, checking it out is extremely important.
1. Incontinence and or numbness around the groin and buttocks.
2. Any accident with forces that may have been sufficient to fracture your spine.
While the aforementioned points require an immediate visit to your doctor, in other circumstances, you generally shouldn't worry about low back pain until three conditions have been met:
1. It's been bothering you for more than six weeks.
2. It's severe or not improving, or actually getting worse.
3. There is at least one other 'red flag' (see below).

These signs or symptoms indicate that you need to pay closer attention to your back pain:
1. The risk of an ominous cause for low back is generally higher if you are under 20 or over 55.
2. Light tapping of the spine is painful.
3. Unexplained fever or chills.
4. Pain in the upper back is associated with a greater cancer risk.
5. Weight loss is a potential sign of cancer.
6. Steroid use, other drug abuse and HIV are all risk factors.
7. If your back pain is accompanied by a general feeling of being unwell, it may be an indication that a disease process is underway.
8. Indicators of autoimmune disease includes a family history of autoimmune disease, gradual yet progressive increase in symptoms before the age of 40, marked by morning stiffness and pain in other joints as well as the low back. Rashes, difficulty digesting food, irritated eyes and discharge from the urethra.
9. Numbness, tingling or weakness in both legs that is especially aggravated by lifting. Symptoms limited to one side are also a concern.
10. Difficulty urinating, incontinence, numbness around the groin and significant weakness in the legs - all of which indicate potentially serious signs of a neurological problem. These symptoms can develop over time, so it's important to keep a watch.
In the case of most cancers and ominous problems, other, distinctive symptoms generally arise which show that there is something more going on than just back pain. It truly is an extraordinary circumstance for back pain to be ominous without causing other symptoms.
It's also extremely common for non-life-threatening low back pain to be alarmingly severe and persistent. Nevertheless, you should never be scared of persistent back pain, this can make low back pain much worse and more likely to last even longer. The good news is that it in it's easy enough to diagnose cancer if you look for it. Screening is therefore important whenever the conditions merit it - that is when the red flags appear in combination with persistent, severe pain.

I THANK GOD FOR THE JOURNEY
At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we believe they will always travel on our side. However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone.
As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they will be significant i.e. our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of your life.
Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum.
Others will go so unnoticed that we don't realize they vacated their seats.
This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and farewells. Success consists of having a good relationship with all passengers requiring that we give the best of ourselves.
The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the best way, love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are.
It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life.
I wish you a joyful journey on the train of life. Reap success and give lots of love. More importantly, thank God for the journey.
Lastly, I thank you for being one of the passengers on my train.
