[www.keralites.net] Dr. G. Venkataswamy - founder of Aravind Eye Hospital - A vehicle to do seva to the poor

Dr. G. Venkataswamy or 'Dr. V' as he is affectionately called is the founder chairman of Aravind Eye Hospital. He was born on October 1, 1918 in Vadamalapuram, a village eighty kilometers from Madurai. He began his university education in the American college, Madurai from which he graduated with a B.A. in chemistry. He received his medical degree from Stanley Medical College at Madurai in 1944.
Thereafter, he joined the Indian Army Medical Corps but had to retire in 1948 after developing rheumatoid arthritis. At one point, the arthritis became so severe that he was bedridden for over a year. For a time, he struggled just to walk and could not hold a pen in his badly crippled fingers.
Despite his condition, he returned to medical school and earned his diploma and masters degree in Ophthalmology. Through his hard work and determination, Dr. V learned how to hold a scalpel and perform cataract surgery. Eventually, he was able to perform more than one hundred surgeries a day.
Dr. V joined the faculty at Madurai Medical College, a government school , where he was appointed head of the Department of Ophthalmology and later served as Vice- Dean of the college. During his period of government service, Dr. V introduced a number of innovative programmes to deal with the problem of blindness in India. He developed the outreach eye camp programmes in 1960, a rehabilitation centre for the blind in 1966, and the creation of an ophthalmic Assistants Training programme in 1973. In his clinical work, Dr. V personally performed over one hundred thousand successful eye surgeries.

In recognition of his work in the fight against blindness, Dr, V received the Padmashree award in 1973 by the Government of India. This award is given to citizens, who have rendered outstanding service to their nation. In 1976, after mandatory retirement from government service at age of 58, Dr. V resolved to continue his work in eye care delivery. With support from his family, he founded Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai , a non profit institution dedicated to providing high quality eye care to all patients who come to its door.
Dr. V blends his spiritual life to his daily work remarkably well. As a young man, he became a disciple of Sri Aurobindo, an Indian philosopher and saint who lived in service to God and man. Aravind was founded on this principle of service and continues to be guided by it.
In 1991, as part of its Wit lectures series, Dr. V was invited to deliver an address at the Harvard Divinity School on the theme of living a spiritual life in the contemporary age. The address entitled 'Illuminated Spirit', has been published and read by many people.
Dr. V begins and ends every day at the hospital with a visit to the meditation room for "a silent talk with God". In discussing his work as a spiritual practice, Dr. V has said, "When I go to meditation room at the hospital every morning, I ask God that I be a better tool, a receptacle for the divine force. We can all serve humanity in our normal professional lives by being more generous and less selfish in what we do. You don't have to be a 'religious' person to serve God. You serve God by serving humanity."

I specially dedicate this post to my friends, who are totally dependant on their children's lives, to nurture their own selves emotionally.
Please develop your own intersts, hobbies etc, however mundane they seem to be..
We must learn
*To love whatever we do instead of doing whatever we love !!"*

Detached attachment must for happiness in old age......................... A must read fwd msg...

*Attachment in Detachment----*
*Written by Sudha* *Murthy, wife of* *Narayan* *Murthy.....Worth reading.......* 👌👌

"When my daughter, the older of my two, wed and left home, I felt a part of me gone.
With a daughter and a son, I know what both mean, differently.
When she was in her teens I felt as if she was my "physical extension" !
So when she left home to set up her own, I felt I lost a limb.
Next time she came to stay with us, I was astonished how her priorities had changed.
We too must've given the same shocks to our own parents !
When she said Amma,
she meant her mother-in-law, not me!
I felt she was always in a hurry to go back to her house and not stay with me for a few more days.
That was the first time, it dawned on me that I have to start practising detachment with attachment.
Two years after my daughter's marriage, my son left for higher studies to US.
Having experienced a child's separation once, I was better equipped emotionally.
I plunged head long into various classes held in the city starting from vedanta to healing to ikebana -
I just wanted to be away from home..since my husband was a 24/7 workaholic.
My son used to write how he was missing my home cooked food, how he was waiting to come back to live in India with us ...
After a few years, he did come back and we got him married.
He started living separately with his wife and we were also happy that they wanted to be independant from the beginning...
But now, it was all changed !
When in the U S, he missed my cooking, now if I called him to come over with his wife for a meal, it was always some excuse like "oh, amma, we have other plans for the day, please don't mistake us if we don't drop in today" !
I could see that his priorities had also changed completely..
We talk so many things and give so much advice to others, but when it comes to our own children, acceptance comes very late. Our next step is to just leave them undisturbed in every way.
It was at that time, that I made the following my 'new profile'.
In all my relationships, rather interactions, I give my best and do my best to live up to what I say.
My attachment with them is complete.
However, I remain detached in the sense that *I do not expect them to reciprocate my affection.*
Most importantly, I make a conscious effort , *not to interfere or pass judgements* on the lives they choose to lead.
My *concern for my near and dear ones will not fade with my detachment.*
If you let go of the ones you love, they will never go away –
this is the *beauty of attachment with detachment !*
I have learnt to love and let go.
This dictum has developed tolerance in me.
When *I let the people live the* *way they want to, I learn to accept* *them for what they are.*
Most importantly ,
I learn to tolerate the world around me and this tolerance brings in me a sense of peace and contentment.
Since both my children live in different places, I follow this very strictly, you know why !
Now *I have realised that we start growing* *mentally much more only after the children leave the house* and we have to tackle the emotional vacuum, that arises, along with age-related problems .

FRIDAY, Jan. 19, 2018 (HealthDay News) -- In the midst of an especially tough flu season, here's more bad news: Researchers say it may be possible to spread the virus simply by breathing.
Until now, it was thought that people picked up a flu virus when they touched contaminated surfaces or inhaled droplets in the air ejected by an infected person's coughs or sneezes.
But the new study finds coughs and sneezes may not be necessary to saturate the air with flu virus.
In the study, researchers analyzed air around the exhaled breath of 142 people with the flu.
"We found that flu cases contaminated the air around them with infectious virus just by breathing, without coughing or sneezing," said study author Dr. Donald Milton, a professor of environmental health at the University of Maryland.
"People with flu generate infectious aerosols [tiny droplets that stay suspended in the air for a long time] even when they are not coughing, and especially during the first days of illness," he explained in a university news release. "So when someone is coming down with influenza, they should go home and not remain in the workplace and infect others."
In fact, nearly half (48 percent) of the airborne samples captured in the air around flu patients who were just breathing -- not coughing or sneezing -- contained detectable influenza virus, the researchers noted.
What's more, when patients did sneeze, that didn't seem to add much to the viral count in the samples, Milton's group added.
Of course certain steps -- "keeping surfaces clean, washing our hands all the time, and avoiding people who are coughing," can still help lower your odds of catching influenza, said Sheryl Ehrman, dean of the College of Engineering at San Jose State University, in California.
But if an infected person's breathing spreads flu virus, even those precautions do "not provide complete protection from getting the flu," she added.
That means that if you are unlucky enough to get the flu, "staying home and out of public spaces could make a difference," Ehrman said.
The researchers believe their findings could help improve mathematical models of the risk of airborne flu transmission and could also be used to develop better public health flu prevention measures.
For example, improvements could be made to ventilation systems in places such as offices, school classrooms and subway cars, to reduce the risk of flu transmission, the team said.
The United States is in the middle of a particularly nasty flu season, with nearly all states reporting high levels of severe flu, and hospitals swamped with cases. Experts blame the severity of this year's flu season on a particularly virulent strain of flu and prolonged periods of very cold weather.
The study was published Jan. 18 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
