artist spotlight: boris bally – street sign art
designer Boris Bally hails from the small state of Rhode Island and uses metal traffic signs (along with weapon parts and other found objects) as his medium. his philosophy about design is similar to that of my own — i have always loved merging different contexts and ideas and Bally's approach stems from his desire to combine art, design, and craft. i feel like when one can do this successfully, you can create something that is very much your own and unique.
his newest piece is "The Broadway Armchair" – Bally goes through great lengths to find the perfect traffic signs that work together perfectly. in the creation of the armchair, absolutely nothing goes to waste. any metal or screws or extra materials not used in this one piece all are saved and put into use in another of Bally's pieces. his repertoire expands beyond just furniture; he makes clocks, picture frames, mailboxes, house numbers, and so on.

in one year, Bally can produce hundreds of these armchairs – up-cycling tons of discarded traffic signs and keeping them out of the landfills. i like Boris's work because it's clever. it is not cold, boring or straightforward – there is a bit of humor to his style. in his artist's statement, Bally hopes to inspire other people to look beyond the intended purpose of the objects around them.
