Health news…

What is a natural alternative to drugs for my arthritis pain?

In a clinical study, turmeric (haldi) was more effective at arthritis pain control than a leading anti-inflammatory drug, diclofenac.  After 8 weeks of use, turmeric users had a 60% reduction in pain scores

News of the decade...

In medical breakthrough, US docs cure infant of HIV...

American researchers claimed to have cured an infant of HIV infection in a medical through that raises hopes for thousands of babies across the world who contract the deadly virus in their mother's wombs.

(Me: hmmmm. The West led by the US lead in Research and Development in Science and Technology; the rest of the world – esp. we Indians - may hate to admit it but the incontrovertible fact is, only the West can revolutionize science and technologies for alternative, renewable sources of energy and for increasing food production by leaps and bounds.   Most of us Indians are anti-science - and see a Frankenstein monster in every new science discovery or invention,  ready to devour us!  - and would rather give credence to all kinds of superstitious mumbo-jumbo.)

Depressing news…

India worst among peers in health : study

Among peers and neighbours India is performing the worst when it comes to the health of its citizens.  We are in this situation because we only pay lip service to health service and health system development.  Our public expenditure on health is among the lowest in the world.  Whether it is life expectancy, mortality due to all causes – on all counts India ranks way below China, Brazil and Sri Lanka, just below Bangladesh and Nepal.  The biggest risk factors for Indians were dietary risks, high BP, household air pollution and tobacco smoking.

Two friends talking to each other.

Rhea: I was in such a generous mood today, I gave a poor beggar a grand.

Vinita (shocked): Really.  But that's a lot of money to give to a beggar.  What did your husband say to that?

Rhea: He said, 'Thank you'.

Weird world

A Swedish woman has discovered her wedding ring on a carrot growing in her garden, 16 years after she lost it.  Lena Paahisson had long ago lost hope of finding the ring, which she designed herself.  The white-gold band, set with seven small diamonds, went missing in her kitchen in 1995.

Man dies 'playing Russian roulette'

London: A man has died after reportedly shooting himself while playing a game of Russian roulette at his home in Glasgow, Scotland.  Russian roulette is a deadly game of chance, which involves loading a handgun with a single bullet, spinning the cylinder so the shooter doesn't know if the bullet is in the barrel, putting the gun to the head and pulling the trigger.

Tweet of the day apparently by Rajdeep Sardesai: "Most of the 'don' politicians I have met over the years are remarkably soft spoken!  Guess when you have muscle you don't need a voice!"

A woman rushed to her doctor, looking very worried and all strung out.  She rattled off, "Doctor, look at me.  When I woke up this morning, I looked at myself in the mirror and saw my hair all wiry and frazzled up, my skin all wrinkled and pasty, my eyes bloodshot and bugging out, and I had this lifeless look on my face!  What's wrong with me, doctor?"

The doctor looked her over for a few minutes, then calmly said, "Well, I can see there's nothing wrong with your eyesight."
