Dubai cops have arrested a housemaid who was mixing her urine with her employer's food and drink in a bid to control them, UAE website Emirates 24/7 reported on Wednesday.
Her employer reported the woman because of the persistent foul smell coming from their food and drink, the report added.
Cops found a bottle of urine in the maid's bedroom during a police search.
The maid later confessed to police that she thought the act would enable her to control the family and push them into giving her a pay rise and better incentives, adding that she had done the same in another Gulf state, the website added.
"The maid justified her behaviour to a general belief in her country that she can control any person by adding her urine to his food or drinks…she said she wanted this family to raise her salary and give her more incentives," LT Colonel Ahmed Al Marri, criminal investigation chief at Dubai police told the website.
"She said the family in Rashidiya suspected the food contained something strange because of the smell but that they have had it regularly since she joined them," he told Emarat Alyoum daily.
He said this was not the first occasion he had heard of such attempts at apparent witchcraft, the website added.
Only last week an Indonesian maid working in the UAE confessed to adding pieces of her underwear to her employer's food, thinking it would enable her to control them.
And it is not unique to the UAE and Middle East, a maid working in Singapore was charged on Tuesday with adding menstrual blood to her employer's coffee, our sister site Yahoo! Singapore reported.
