Would you get a room at the Terrible Hotel? The bizarre hotel names that are enough to put you off an overnight stay
By Damien Gayle
How would you feel if someone invited you stay at the Terrible Hotel? Maybe a room at the Hotel Swastika is more appealing? This set of images shows the signs standing loud and proud outside some of the world's most unfortunately named hotels. And while some of these hotels' amusing names stem from mistranslation or cultural misunderstanding, other guest-house proprietors really ought to have known better
Not particularly assuring... But Terrible's Hotel and Casino is in fact a reputable Nevada gambling house recently bought and renovated by the family which owns the Terrible Herbst chain of petrol stations
Watch out for the thousand year old eggs... You might not want to eat from the buffet in this Chinese hotel
One of the latter is the off-puttingly named Terrible Hotel-Casino, whose name suggests that you'll get a less-than-comfortable night's stay. However, the Nevada gambling joint, about a mile east of the Las Vegas Strip is actually well known and caters to locals. It is in fact called Terrible's Hotel and Casino and has been operating under its current incarnation since a $65million buyout and renovation by the family which owns the Terrible Herbst chain of petrol stations.
Mrs Malaprop would feel welcome: The name of the Baltic Bitch Hotel apparently refers to a nearby beach
Great for a dirty weekend? Another German guest house with a name that would make English speakers titter
The Baltic Bitch Hotel, apparently somewhere in Russia, on the other hand, appears to be an awful malapropism accidentally inserted in place of the English word 'beach'.
Elsewhere, the Hotel Swastika, presumably in India, sounds unappealing to Westerners. But consider that before the symbol's appropriation by Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime it was an ancient Sanskrit symbol meaning 'to be good' and you may change your mind about staying there. Indeed, reviews on the Trip Advisor website for a hotel with the same name in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, rate it at a respectable three-and-a-half stars, with one Canadian hailing it as 'great value for money'.
China has a deservedly awful reputation with English-language signs, and the stomach-churning Resist Bacteria Hotel is no exception. You might want to thing twice before visiting that hotel's breakfast bar. Germany's Hotel Fux, on the other hand, sounds like the ideal location for a romantic weekend away.
