The RICHEST South Indian!

IT finds TN man with US treasury bond worth $5bn..

IT sleiths I Chennai has stumbled upon a 45-year-old man, T.M. Ramalingam, said to be a "smalltime financial broker" being in possession of US treasury bonds worth $5bn. (some 30,000 crores of Rupees!) He lives near Upputhural village, 80 km from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. The bonds are valid till January 2015. The guy who is educated up to class X, and can hardly speak English, is well versed in financial and business aspects, especially with regards to securities and bonds. He has confirmed that he had acquired the securities from Brazil.

He has never filed an Income-tax return!

"Don't gain the world and lose your soul, wisdom is better than silver or gold" – Bob Marley

(Me: An empty rhetoric in present times)

Weird world…

Not served fish curry, magistrate fires staffer…

Chennai: The reason behind suspending a court employee cannot get more weird than this: a woman judicial magistrate in Tirunelveli district (in Tamil Nadu) placed her office assistant under suspension because the latter could not cook fish curry for her.

Kerala cancer patients to swallow Peru beetle pill..

The converted see it as a panacea, skeptics call it a placebo effect. But three patients from north Kerala (South India), all of them in the final stages of cancer will out to Lima, Peru, later this week to risk swallowing live insects in the hope of a miracle cure. Around 200 other cancer patients will follow them in the coming to days to try their luck.

(Me: can't blame them, for hope for life springs eternally)

Elephant beauty contest in Nepal…

A elephant beauty contest was held in Nepal with 90 jumbos in participation. The spectacle saw the mammals scored by a panel of five judges. They were judged on their headdresses, cleanliness, personality and temperament, and many elephants had their toenails painted to gain a better score..

How many tax auditors does it take to find a Rs.10-lakh mistake in an expense report?
Three. One to find the mistake and the other two to discuss the significance of it!

Tongue very much in cheek…

"Common people are alarmed by stock market gyrations because they don't know them. The best kept secret of experts is, nor do they" – Kaushik Basu.

(Me: can't agree more. The financial analysts, columnists and assorted "experts" are as much wizards as they claim to be, they wouldn't be doling out advices to others on how to make money in the bourses but would be so busy raking in the dough themselves that they will be left with no time for anything else!)

News (or bad news) for the believers…

Spiritual people at risk of mental illness..

London: Being spiritual may make you more susceptible to mental health, a new study of has claimed. The researchers suggest people who claim to be "spiritual" but not religious are often struggling to cope mentally and suffered problems including abnormal eating conditions, drug abuse, anxiety disorder, phobias and neurosis.

"Our main finding is that people who had a spiritual understanding of life had worse mental health than those with an understanding that was neither religious nor spiritual", the study noted.

(Me: those suffering deep depression or bereavement of a dear one in the family do find solace in spiritualism or religion seriously. Otherwise, both are hocus-pocus and all spiritual/religious gurus are charlatans, out to make a fast buck from the gullible aam janta (lay men).

Health news…

Is there anything to combat Alzheimer's disease symptoms?

Try the Indian herb ashwagandha (Withania somnifera/winter cherry). A 2010 study revealed that ashwagandha can help manage cell damage in the brain by providing more potent protection than vitamins A, C and E.

**

Health tip…

Exercise, even a brisk walk, can be more effective than a nap or cup of coffee at fighting fatigue.

(Me: This throws out the conventional wisdom)

**

Think it over…

"I don't see gender as the most significant fact of human existence" – Jim Harrison

(Me: hmmm. 99.999% of us Indians think otherwise…)

**

Man to wife: "Before I apologize, I'd like to look for a good excuse on Google."
**

Robby: Would you like my hand in marriage?
His girlfriend: Alright, but who's getting the rest of you?

**

Love is grand; divorce is at least a hundred grand.

(Me: To my Indian friends who may not know it, 1 grand = 1000 dollars)
