From the world of medical n science world…

Nanosponges could replace anti-venom.

In the future, if you get bitten by a snake or poisoned, yur doctor is likely to inject you with nanosponges that will absorb all the toxins without need for any specialized anti-venom.

Engineers at the University of California, San Diego, have invented a "nanosponge" capable of safely removing a broad class of dangerous toxins from the blood streem – including toxins produced by MRSA, E.coli, snakes and bees. These nanosponges, which thus far have been studied in mice, canneutralise "pore-forming toxins," which destroy cells by poking holes in their cell membranes.

Genetic trigger for epilepsy discovered..

Researchers at the University Dept of Neorology at the MedUni Vienna have identified a gene behind an epilepsy syndrome, which could also play a important in other idiopathic (genetically caused) epilepsies. With the so-called _next generation sequencing" with which genetic changes can be identified within a few days, it was ascertained that CNTN2 gene is defective in this type of epilepsy.

Health tips..

Mangoes clear clogged pores, eliminate pimples, promote good eyesight, lower cholesterol and prevent dry eyes.

(Me: but diabetics beware of this 'king of fruit')

Plums protect the heart, regulate blood sugar levels and improve memory.

Hair test cn predict heart disease risk..

Hair strands contain valuable data about stress levels that can used to determine cardiovascular disease risk. Unlike a blood test that captures a snapshot of stress hormone levels at a single point in time, a scalp hair analysis can be used to view trends in stress hormone cortisol over several months.

Weird world…

China abuzz about presidential taxi ride that wasn't…

A cabbie's claim that he gave Chinese President Xi Jinping a ride in Beijing last month sent China's internet abuzz on Thursday, with many people comparing it to the secret trips made by emperors centuries ago.

(Me: Yep, a literal example of people being taken for a ride..)

BMC anti-dengue drive hits starry roadblock.

The drive, which was sparked by Yash Chopra's death from dengue in October 2012, is ironically facing opposition from other Bollywood biggies, who refuse to let inspectors into their homes to do fumigation.

(Me: Many of the celluloid heroes are villains in real life…)

Saudi Arabia Deports 3 men for being 'too sexy'

New York: Three men were deported out of Saudi Arabia as religious authorities deemed them 'too handsome' amid worries that women would get attracted towards them. The men who were delegates from the UAE at the Jenadrivah Heritage and Cultural Festival in Riyadh were deported after festival officials said the men were taken out on the grounds that they were too handsome and the commission members feared that female visitors could fall for them.

(Yesterday when a hilarious tweet was published on Mumbai Mirror on the topic, one thought somebody was playing a prank…)

'Tittooing' latest craze in UK

New York: Nipple tattooing or 'Tittooing' is the latest trend to hit the UK. The cosmetic procedure, a way for people to darken and/or reshape their nipples, has apparently become increasingly popular in the UK, with women paying up to Pound sterling 1,200 (Rs.1.2 lakhs) for a set. 'A lot of women want their nipples made darker. It's the fashion', said a clinician who performs the procedure. Some said their boyfriends want them done…

I sneezed because God blessed me with you.

(Me: ya, because u were sneezing, u didn't notice her thumbing her nose at you..)

News to think over and act on…

Where does the plastic go that is thrown away?

The world produces 20 billion pounds of plastic every year. 10% of that ends up in one our oceans. 70% sinks, causing damage to the ocean floor. The remaining 30% floats, causing massive islands of trash, called gyres, in the middle of all the world's oceans.

(Me: In metro cities like Mumbai, they clog sewage, flood water drains and nullas; year after year, come rains and the cities' roads look like veritable rivers and the buildings marooned like isles)

Two fortune tellers met by the beach on a summer Sunday of 2009.

First fortune teller: Lovely weather it is, isn't it?

Second Fortune Teller: True that! It reminds me so much of the summer of 2010.

Think it over

"It is his restraint that is honorable to a person, not their liberty" –John Ruskin..

(Me: True, a "vibrant" democracy doesn't mean one can keep blaring any nonsense, as we do in our country; freedom and liberty have to be exercised with utmost restraint). After all, right and duties/responsibilities must always go hand-in-hand)

A young boy receives an SMS from his girlfriend, which reads: "Let's call off our relationship."

The boy is devastated and broken. Until he gets a second message saying, "Sorry, that was wrongly sent to you"
