Maha Shivaratri - the Day to Attain Spiritual Progression Maha Shivaratri is celebrated in the dark fortnight or Krishna Paksha (waning moon) in the month of Magha. Shivaratri literally means "the night of Shiva". Lord Shiva is the representation of primordial energy from which everything was born and to which everything in the universe will disintegrate into. He is also the God of enlightenment, also the God of light body. During this great night of Shiva, the supreme archetype protects His devotees from evil forces such as lust, greed and anger, grants boons and awakens wisdom. Moreover, the formless form of Shiva, the Shiva Lingam, comes alive on this night. The power of lingam is among the most glorious occurrence created by God among His creations. The Shiva Lingam is symbolic of the creative power of the universe. It signifies the truth that God does not have any definite form. Shiva, is the remover of sin and the Lord of mercy and compassion. Wholehearted dedication to the Lord will dilute the hindrances created by negative Karma and convert them into positive energy. Maha Shivaratri is the transition from the darkness of gloom and ignorance to the dawn of divine joy and knowledge! Shivaratri, its Legendary Origin According to the Puranas, during the great churning of the ocean, which is referred to as "Samudra Manthan", a pot of venom arose from the ocean. The Gods and the Demons were horrified as it could put an end to the entire world. When they ran to Lord Shiva for help, he drank the deadly poison in order to protect the world. But he held it in his throat instead of fully swallowing it. This turned his throat blue, and since then he came to be known as 'Nilkantha', the blue-throated one. This event marks the festival of Shivaratri. What To Do On Shivaratri Night? One of the most holy nights in Vedic traditions is Maha Shivaratri, The Great Night of Shiva. Shivaratri is the auspicious time for every soul to get into the primordial consciousness of non-existence or Nirvana. One is required to keep vigil during the night in order to receive grace and assistance. Poojas and prayers offered during Maha Shivaratri are promised to be amplified 10 million times. If there is a time that you can purify your thoughts and activate the empowerment of your goals, it is this special night. What You Can Do at Home on Maha Shivaratri: Clean your home and clear your mindBathe yourself and wear clean comfortable clothes.Fill your mind with thoughts of ShivaFast and feel the bliss. Chant Shiva's perfect mantra, Om Namah Shivaya.Sing Shiva's praise with a full heart.Bathe a Shiva Lingam.Light a candle and some incense.Meditate on Shiva and only Shiva. If your mind wanders, bring it back to Shiva's feet. Forget life's problems, pains of the past, and worries about the future.See God in everyone and in everything.
