The basti has become such a peaceful place. People have not only become more sensitised and aware but also more civil. Earlier every household squabble would spill on to the street, but now that doesnt happen, points out L Kumari, a widow who lives here with her 11-year-old daughter.
For good Samaritan and regular blood donor Rao, it has been a lifes mission that is beginning to bear fruit after a decade of relentless struggle that nearly broke his own home. A resident of the slum, Rao was appalled to see children being pushed into crime and become drug addicts and alcoholics.
My reward has been the change that the school brought in the slum. There has been a complete societal and behavioural transformation among the residents, comprising families of rickshaw pullers, daily wage earners and municipal drain workers. They have become more responsible towards themselves, their families and children, says Rao.
