[www.keralites.net] Khatte-mitten khabhrain from around the world for 7/6/13

(Me: A fine, meaningful alliteration, figure of speech!)
**
A poignant cartoon quip on the death of a aspiring, failed starlet, Jiah Khan, who hanged herself by a fan in her flat..
"The world of showbiz is cruel and lonely. Fame is fickle, and when times are bad, thousands of fans will let you down.
Sadly, just one won't…"
(Me: Just too good. Too true!!)

Weird world…

Man jailed for putting pubic hair in curry to get free meal.
London: A man was jailed after he tried to get a free meal in an Indian eatery by sprinkling his pubic hair on his dish. A CCTV caught Lee Tyers putting his hands down the ffront of his trousers while he was sitting in an Indian restaurant in Middlesbrough. In an attempt to not pay the Pounds sterling 39.5 (about Rs.4,000) bill, he told staff he found the hair in his food. The restaurant owner told court that Tyers is a patron of 18 years, but owed Pounds 110. Tyers has been jailed for two weeks and asked to pay Pounds 39.55 compensation.

Stranger's kindness led to a woman winning $590mn jackpot.
A stranbger's act of indness led to an 84-year-old Florida woman winning the $590 million Powerball bonanza last month. Gloria M, who collected the prize money on Wednesday, revealed that she bought the winning ticket only after another person let her jump the queue.
**
Bangladesh survivor goes from factory to 5-star hotel.
Dhaka: A seamstress trapped in the rubble for 17 days after Bangladesh's garment factory disaster in April emerged from hospital on Thursday, saying she felt great and was looking forward to a new job at a luxury hotel. The 18-year-old girl who became a national hero after the tragedy that claimed over 1,100 lives, looked healthy at a ceremony at the military factory. Begum, who used to make $65 a month at the factory, will now earn a basic salary of $450 in her new role welcoming guess at the hotel.

Rubber's pain is no pulled muscle, but a baby!
An aspiring half-marathon runner from Minnesota, attributed her unbearable back pain to a two-hour training session. A day later, she was cradling a newborn. Trish S, 33, says she had no idea she was pregnant before Monday's surprise birth. The mother of three said she hadn't gained any weight or felt foetal movement in the months before. And besides, her husband had a vasectomy.
(Me: The first thing apna deshvasi would do is suspect her fidelity…)
**
FBI arrests NRI for stealing trade secrets.
Tech firm employee held hours before leaving for India with proprietary info worth millions.
(Comment: Old habits back in India die hard. Luckily for the FBI, he was caught in the nick of the time, otherwise, he would have flown down to his mother land and would live comfortably forever hereafter, the 'systems' being what they are here..)
**
From the world of science…
Does baldness relate to heart disease?
Bad news for the bald. A review of 6 studies involving 37,000 people has revealed that male pattern baldness increases risk of heart disease by 30 to 40%. The increased risk only involved men whose baldness began on the crown of thehead, not receding hairline.
(Me: Check it out, where it is, at once!)
**
Why forbidden fruit is hard to resist…
A study by the experts of University of British Columbia has shed light o how people become obsessed with forbidden pleasures.
The most important finding is that obsession is not as strong if others are also denied: when an object is forbidden to a group, the allure of the object drops dramatically. This helps to explain why group diet techniques such as Weight Watchers can be more successful than dieting alone.
(Me: hmmm. It's like: if we do not get our 'object of desire', it is okay as long as it is denied to others…)
**
Berbecuing meat produces carcinogens called HCAs. Using rosemary marinade on your meat can help prevent them.
**
Tucking your wallet in your back pocket can compress and irritate the sciatic nerve and cause shooting pain down your leg.
**
Pun fun…
Ron: Do you know why a football stadium cool?
Bob: No.
Ron: Because there's a fan in every seat!
**
Man to wife: "If money is the root of all evil, then we're practically superheroes!"
**
A tongue very much in cheek quote…
"Cricket lasts five days. We break every now and then for food. And we spend a lot of time rubbing our balls on our trousers" – Andrew Flintoff, former English cricketer, explaining cricket to American singer Jennifer Lopez
(Me: LOL. Feel like reading it again n again..!!)
**
A quote in ToI credited to Ted Poe, US Congressman, on US-Pakistan ties..
"We give a lot of money to Pakistan and I don't think we should give money to a country to hate us. They will do it for free"
**
"Defeat has its lessons as well as victory" – Patrick Buchanan
(Me: As a true apna deshvasi, me has my own doubts… For example, defeat after defeats in sport have only thickened our skin…)
**
Another gem of a quote in ToI
"Silence is golden, speech is silver; so I do not talk much" – Mamata Banerjee.
(A wag puts it in perspective: Of course, her deeds and actions speak LOUDER than silence or speech!)
**
At a school cafeteria, children had queued up for a special lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The teacher in charge made a note, and posted on the apple tray:
'Take only ONE. God is watching.'
At the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies.
A child had stuck a note on the tray,
'Take all you want. God is watching the apples'

"In the end, it is not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years" – Abraham Lincoln.
