Comments made by friend, Murty Aditham, to one my posts; I am reproducing as many of my other friends might have missed it...

Murty Aditham: Please allow me to dilate on the subject. In the US, there is a criticism levelled against the Indians by the Americans that Indians do not generally do not donate to the charities in the country of their adoption but send large sums of money to their motherland towards construction of temples, Veda patashalas and other religious purposes. Indians, particularly South Indians, settled in US and elsewhere contribute large sums towards construction of temples in the countries of their adoption. But they do not show the same willingness and ardour while contributing to charitable organizations, which render commendable services to the various segments of the society. The other day, a Governor of a State in US expressed his disappointment with the Indian community who approached him for support in construction of a temple in his State affected by a giant storm. I believe the Governor told the Indian community leaders that construction of a temple would only create traffic problems and would not serve the society in which they are living. I am not against construction of temples per se but the Indians should learn to respect the sentiments of the society they are living in and take up more society oriented activities to deflect any criticism that the Indians are self- centered and do not serve the needs of the entire society. Yes, Iyerji is right in saying that NRIs, particularly the rich ones should imbibe the culture of American philanthropy and help more towards social causes. I only disagree with him when he tries to gloss over the many ills in our own country but tries to sharply attack NRIs for alleged omission and commission. I have no objection to NRIs contributing large sums towards construction of temples in their respective native towns in the memory of their parents and others but I have to raise one issue here. There are many ancient temples in every important town and villages and these temples are in a dilapidated state because of the continued neglect and dwindling patronage. Would it not be nice and more appropriate if NRIs and the rich Indians contribute moneys towards restoration of these ancient and historical temples to their old glory than to pour money towards construction of new temples or in already established rich temples like Venkatesawara temple in Tirupati. I sincerely request all NRIs and the Janata here to mull over these issues dispassionately and make a new beginning.

A man walking down a street noticed a small boy trying to reach the doorbell of a house. Even when he jumped up, he couldn't quite reach it. The man decided to help the boy, walked up on the porch and pushed the doorbell. He looked down at the boy, smiled and asked, "What now?"

The boy answered: "Now we run like crazy!"
