Grapefruit as blessed offerings

The Veerabhadra Swamy Temple at Ashtamudi in Kollam is the only temple in the southern part of the country with Veerabhadra as the presiding deity. It could also well be the only temple in the country from where devotees take home grapefruits (citrus paradisi) as blessed offerings.

The annual "urul nercha" festival of the temple falls on the 28th Onam day and for three days thousands of devotees arrive at the temple have a dip in the Ashtamudi lake and do `shayanapradikshanam' to appease the deityIn the past, after the rituals, devotees return home devoutly purchasing grapefruits from the stalls within the temple complex. The grapefruits are purchased as blessed offerings from the temple to be given to or shared with their kith and kin. Though payasams and other sweets are also given as blessed offerings from the temple, grapefruits continue to be the first choice. It has been a tradition at the temple to organise an agricultural fair along with the annual festival.

The temple committee office-bearers say that grapefruits could have become the prime take-home offering, as it is the main harvest product during this part of the year.

The festival ends on Tuesday.
