5 Cancer Myths We Must Not Believe

Cancer has been synonymous with 'Death'. It invariably draws a 'serious' expression whenever and wherever mentioned. While Cancer death figures are now tumbling in the West, about 70% of these deaths last year were reported from developing world and a fifth from India. It is indeed a dread, particularly when detected late. However, there are many fighters and stats suggest that cancer deaths are being managed better – this is attributed to early detection. While most causes of this scare-you-upon-mention disease are unknown, the causes as well as cures of cancer remain deeply shrouded in mystery and doubts.

This World Cancer Day lets demystify top 5 commonly held notions about the disease –Fun & Info @ Keralites.net
1. Myth: Cancer Means Death.
Truth: Not Always. Cancer when detected early can be completely cured. How long a person will live, depends on many factors including whether the cancer is slow or fast growing, how much it has spread, whether effective treatments are available, person's overall health etc.

2. Myth: Cancer is Contagious.
Truth: Cancer does not spread through contact. The only way in which cancer can spread from one person to another is in the case of organ or tissue transplantation from a donor with history of Cancer.

3. Myth: Cancer is Hereditary.
Truth: Most people who develop cancer have no family members with a history of the disease. In fact most common cancers are preventable through a nutritious diet, maintaining a healthy weight and regular physical activity.

4. Myth: Sugar Increases Cancer Growth.
Truth: All sugars are carbohydrates, or carbs. Whether from sweets or fruit, get broken down in our digestive system to release glucose and fructose. All our cells, cancerous or not, use glucose for energy. While it's very sensible to limit sugary foods to maintain overall health and weight, it doesn't imply that Cancer cells feed on sugar.

5. Myth: Deodorants Cause Breast Cancer.
Truth: There is no conclusive evidence that the chemicals used in underarm antiperspirants or deodorants have anything to do with changes in breast tissues. Neither is there any established relationship between underarm shaving and the cancer.
