[www.keralites.net] Khatte-mitten khabhrain from around the world for 15/6/13

"Yesterday is but today's memory,
And tomorrow is today's dream" – Khalil Gibran
**
Mindchow
The hardest part about moving forward is not looking back.
(Me: Impossible!)
**
Quips and counter quips par excellence…
"Dua dete hai jeene ki, dawa dete hai marne ki" – Bihar CM, Nitish Kumar, when asked about the relations between the JDU and the BJP.
(Loose translation in English, though the quote loses its original flavor: "They bless us for long life but give medicines to finish us off sooner"
**
Tongue very much in cheek…
I love sleep. My life has a tendency to fall apart when I'm awake!
**
Woman to husband: "No, your snoring doesn't bother me. Except when we're kissing"
**
"Life is 10 percent what you make it and 90 percent how you take it" – Irving Berlin.

Mother asks little Johnny, as they wait for the bus, to tell the driver he is four years old when asked because he will ride for free.
As they get into the bus the driver asks Johnny how old he was.
"I am four years old".
"And when will you be six years old?" asks the driver.
"When I get off the bus," answers Johnny.

From the world of science…
If it says "whole grains" on the box, does that mean that the cereal is a good fiber source?
Not necessarily. Only about half of all cereals touting whole grain benefits are actually good sources of fiber. Look for at least 3 grams of fiber per serving.
(Me: Buyers beware! This is true of all 'health' foods e.g. organic foods, weight-loss supplements; they all invariably make tall claims and charge fancy prices. Recently, consumer forum in Mumbai ordered such a weight-loss clinic was ordered to pay a man Rs.5000 for EVERY promised kg of weight loss!
As long as there are gullible suckers, the tribe of these conmen and fly-by-night operators will flourish)
**
'Baldness drugs curbs alcoholism in men'
A researcher at the George Washington University found that men, who used the medication finasteride to cure baldness, were also drinking less alcohol than before. While robust literature exists on effects on rodents, this is the first study on the role of finasteride in alcohol consumption in humans.
(Me: Goes to prove medicines have positive side effects, too, even though the negative ones are overblown and given undue publicity, often by vested interests
Besides being a source of good cholesterol, almonds also help in reducing inflammation in the body.
**
Bananas are ideal post-workout foods. The sample sugars present in them quickly provide energy and normalize blood sugar levels.
(Me: One has often seen Nadal eating bananas in the 2-min break between games)
**
Men are to be blame for menopause!
Toronto: Women can now blame men for hot flushes, mood swings and other symptoms of menopause they suffer from! Men's preference for younger women in selecting mates may have led to menopause in older females, according to a new study led by an Indian-origin researcher.
(Me: Men-O-pause?)
**
Weird world…
Boston parking space auctioned for $560,000!
A lady has agreed to pay a whopping $560,000 (over Rs.3 crores) for a space to park two cars near her home in downtown Boston.
**
Thieves steal garage in UK!
In a bizarre robbery, thieves dismantled and stole a prefabricated double garage from outside a house in the UK. A pair of 6-feet-tall ornate metal gates and four concrete paving stones were also taken.
**
'Happy Birthday to you" is from copyright…
'Happy Birth to You," the ditty sung around the world, belongs to the public, says a lawsuit.
The proposed class action asks a federal court to declare the song to be in the public domain and that Warner/Chappel Music Inc, the music publishing arm of Warner Music Group, return "millions of dollars of unlawful licensing fees" it has collected for reproductions. The plaintiff is Good Morning To You Productions Corp, New York company that says it is making a documentary about the song.

Boy's family burns lover girl, assaults mother…
Lucknow (UP): A woman was assaulted and her daughter burnt to death in an Uttar Pradesh village by the family of a youth the victim wanted to marry. The police said Karahkol resident Manju was in love with Ranjit from the same village. When Manju's mother pleaded before the panchayat (village justice-dispensing authority) that the two be allowed to marry, Ranjit's father Jai Hind and his relatives burnt Manju to death. Seven people have been arrested.

India to be world's most populous country, overtaking China, by 2028: UN
(Me: For a country with two-thirds her population being poor – at a humongous 800 million now, more than the population of the entire African, South American or North American continent ! – this is a dubious distinction. Anyways who cares? We can always pat on our own back, albeit foolhardily or disingenuously – that it would provide demographic dividends, whatever that may mean).
**
In the Jia Khan's suicide case, the entire media has already given its verdict that her lover is NOT GUILTY of abetment!
**
Only in India…
Birdbrained AP (Andhra Pradesh, Southern India) cops arrest, punish goose.
Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh may have the dubious distinction of recording the second highest number of cases involving crimes against women in the country, but it seems the Vijayawada police's priorities lie elsewhere.
Acting on a complaint against goose pecking at children, a team from Nunna police station swooped down on Ranjit Kumar's house at Sugali Colony on Tuesday and took the winged suspect in their custody. The restrained the bird by tying to a two-wheeler and punished it by denying it food and water for many hours.
The laborer in Kumar's house says his spotless waterfowl had become aggressive after the partner was stolen a month ago!!
(Me: hmmmmm. Jokes are aplenty pouring bile and ridicule on married women and damning them for all marital disharmony. However, the males, whether of the homo sapiens or of other lesser forms of animals, having tasted the forbidden fruit, can't do without the female species for long….)
