[www.keralites.net] Life is a Beach

Photographer travels the globe to snap beach-goers as they relax under the rays.

By Daily Mail Reporter

There is nothing new under the sun but the way natives choose to soak up the warmth from the universe's massive star can vary greatly.

English photographer Martin Parr has said that though Americans may have given rise to the tradition of street photography, Great Britain can boast that it gave birth to photographing seaside scenes.

'In the UK, we have the beach!' he boasts in his book, Life's a Beach, published by Aperture. Though the English are known for their stiff-upper lip and keeping up appearances, the beach is one of the few spots they go to unwind and relax.

In his first book, The Last Resort published in 1986, Mr Parr captured shots from the seaside resort of New Brighton, which is located in northwest England near Liverpool.

Given the popularity of the collection of photographs of beach goers, he decided to take his show on the road and began taking pictures of sun bathers the world over from China, Belgium, England, Italy and even the Ukraine.

Though the nationalities change, the love of the sun crosses cultures and he captures the delighted looks of sun bathers in the new edition of his book, Life's a Beach, that will be released in May.  'This book shows Parr at his best, startling us with moments of captured absurdity and immersing us in rituals and traditions associated with beach life the world over,' a statement from the book's publisher read.

In celebration to the upcoming publication of Mr Parr's mini-sized edition of the photograph collection, Aperture will be hosting an exhibition of the pictures included in the portrait book.

It will run from May 2nd-July 3rd at the Aperture headquarters in New York
