THIS year's pooram was celebrated with splendour. Immediately after the celebration, Sevanasree members began cleaning Swaraj Round and Thekkinkad Maidan, the main venues of the pooram. There were 52 women who took up the job. Their coordination and hard work made Swaraj Round very tidy after the pooram. Suresh Babu, the coordinator of the project, said, "Sevanasree members of the corporation have done a wonderful service during the last three days of Thrissur Pooram." Sindhu, a member of Sevanasree unit, said, "We started working days ago. During pooram days, we render service without any extra payment. We began our job early in the morning and ends at night." Lalitha, another member said, "We have been cleaning roads and other places from Monday. On the pooram day, we worked from 12midnight to 8am. Yesterday, work started at 6am. We will stop work after cleaning Thekkinkadu Maidan and Swaraj Round." Anitha said: "The ban on plastic by the corporation really helped us. The garbage included papers and disposable items. We didn't find any other harmful waste. In the previous years, plastic waste was a big problem." Services of Sevanasree members were first utilised in 2004. This year, the corporation's butter milk distribution was taken up by Sevanasree. Sindhu added that "we are collecting waste in our vehicles and disposing them at the corporation's dump yards." One of the women empowerment programmes of the corporation, Sevanasree still continues to be successful.City Journal, ThrissurNandakumar |
