Healthy Ways to Fast This Navratri

Navratri's around the corner and along with the celebrations, it brings the nine-day fast! Fasting for a long period of time could give you tummy troubles and make you feel weak. Here are some tips so that you feel light and detoxed and not drained out!

Fast, Don't Feast!

Fasting entails a lot of self-control. But if fast' food includes fried potatoes, sabudana khichdi, kheer, pakodas, etc. there's nothing like it, right? Nowadays, fasts mean stuffing yourself with these oily treats. According to Mumbai-based nutritionist Richa Anand, Navratri fasts are not like the way they used to be. In fact, people invariably end up eating a lot more. Dishes like sabudana khichdi are very popular but should be avoided as they are low in fibre, So, watch what you eat and don't let the weighing scales tip to the wrong side!

Fast' Foods

Instead of binging on packaged foods like potato chips, opt for healthier foods and keep it light. Have fruits like bananas, papayas and apples frequently as they keep you energised. Make sure you drink a lot of water and fluids like buttermilk and fruit juices. Make sure you eat something in the morning. Eat fruits or dry fruits every two hours to prevent acidity, says Sneha Trivedi, a Mumbai-based nutritionist.

Health Comes First

Not everybody should fast. However religious you may be, if you suffer from diabetes, hyperacidity or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) you should give fasting a miss, says Richa Anand. Pregnant women and children should avoid fasting too.

A lot of us go on a no salt' fast during Navratri. It can lead to weakness. So try and have at least one meal with salt to make up for it, says Dr Richa.

Don't Starve

Fasting doesn't mean starving yourself. Prolonged fasts lead to problems like weakness, anaemia, acidity, fatigue and headaches that can interfere with your everyday chores. So make sure you are not depriving your body of energy.

With these simple tips, you can fast and not be low on energy this Navratri.
