Aadhaar Card mandatory for Twitter and Facebook accounts - Kapil Sibal
"All the citizens of India having Twitter and Facebook accounts have to have their accounts linked to their AADHAR numbers immediately!" tweeted Mr. Kapil Sibal today. A detailed notification is expected from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology later in the day, after this tweet has trended enough. Our correspondent has been monitoring the furious exchange of tweets and retweets on the web for the past few hours and has come up with the following report.
It seems Twitter and Facebook have been asked to interface to AADHAR and authenticate their users by linking their accounts to their UID numbers. This is to be known as "Know Your User Now" (KYUN).Programmers at UIDAI lead personally by Mr. Nandan Nilekani have been working continuously for the past few days to implement a KYUNKI (KYUN Kernel Interface) for Twitter and FB to use. Till the time the software is ready with this feature, FB and twitter will be blocked.
Even though false accounts have been prevalent for quite sometime, matters have come to a head with some high profile cases involving personalities like Ms. Sunanda Phuskar Tharoor becoming victims.Once the authenticity of users are established, government is thinking of implementing the following:
1. Tweets and FB posts can be used as evidence in legal proceedings.2. Government departments can directly transfer circulars and other information to employee acccounts.
3. Transfers of officials can be tweeted to take immediate effect."I expect KYUN to be to social web what KYC has become to financial services" says a tweet just received from our Communications and Information Technology minister Mr. Sibal.
