CHENNAI: Dr D Rajakannan, Opthalmologist invents glasses to cure Ptosis, gets awarded :- CHENNAI: Dr D Rajakannan, Head of Ophthalmology Department at ESIC Hospital, KK Nagar, Chennai, was honoured with the 'best doctor' award for his invention of 'modified crutch glasses' in 2012 for Ptosis, a condition of drooping of the upper eyelid due to aging or paralysis.
This invention and experiment on his patients at ESIC Hospital in KK Nagar helped the people set right their problem without surgery. The doctor invented the glasses, using a dental material.
"I feel proud of having received this award from the Chief Minister's hands," Dr Rajakannan told Express.
The 43-year-old doctor completed his MBBS from Annamalai University in 1995 and his MS (Ophthalmology) from Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai in 1999.
He has 16 years' service in ophthalmology and developed a new procedure and technique called stem cells transplant, which helps in restoration of vision to those who lost their vision due to ocular surface damage, burns and chemical injuries.
This new vision restoration technique developed and practised has been commended by eminent medical specialist and administrators. This work has been commended by the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment also.
