[www.keralites.net] Robbing the Joy of Childhood

Robbing the joy of childhood

Techno-school, Digital school, Concept school, Modern School...,the designations now we see to the extermination camps of the joy of childhood are many. They want to ram down Newtonian mechanization from the earliest stage of concept sprouting in a child. They admit children as young as three years.

According to Peter Medawar, most Humanities and even Life sciences to some extent suffer from what is called the Physics Envy.(page 6,The Devil's Chaplain by Richard Dawkins) But life sciences after the development of Genetics, Cellular Biology etc have succeeded in getting rid of their Newtonian Physics imitation complex. But most Humanities with subjects which appear very easy or even shallow, dress up and language up their subjects meaninglessly technicalising their content artificially as they suffer from an inferiority complex when they compare themselves with what is called the proto science-Newtonian Physics. People, who suffer from this inferiority complex when they see technical equations filled with symbols of mathematics, get dazzled and automatically feel that there is some substance in the passage which is beyond their comprehension.

Economics with its subject matter of mapping the income-employment, savings, investments etc dynamics, cannot escape from mathematics. But its role model can never be Newtonian physics. It has to be part of Ecology, Social Psychology, Physical Environment, Cultural influences etc.Human actions cannot be mapped mechanically. Economics mainly is a branch of Psychology.

Similarly, Pedagogy, the science of teaching must get rid of its physics inferiority complex. Thanks to this complex, we have today perversions like the Techno-school, Digital School, Concept School etc, horribly mutilating the very sprouting of concept development in a child. There are today pamphlets of schools that tell that a child will be trained for the IIT from 5th standard onwards!

When I was young, for going from our native village to the town where my father set up his law practice, just twenty miles away,a bullock cart was made ready by 4 am. Cushions were arranged in the cot for us to sleep gazing the open sky. The bulls walked slowly and leisurely and we savoured the sky. After three hours, we arrived at the balks of the river Krishna. We swam, had fun and frolic for two hours, and had darsan in the temple. Again we got into our cart and reached very leisurely our home by 6 pm.we enjoyed the travel, the leisure, the stops at the Satram, the Darsan by some Holy man. I contemplated very happily going through those trees, frequent ponds, hospitality in every village. Now a bus completes the same travel in one hour, in a treeless, pond-less, people filled wasteland. We travel after nature died.
