Ginger has long been used as a powerful medicinal remedy, but there are certain situations where it can actually do more harm than good. Because ginger is so powerful, there are certain conditions that ginger can actually do harm. They are very specific, and if you ahve any of these conditions, it is recommended that you stay away from the ginger.
Bleeding Disorders
Because ginger promotes circulation, if you have a bleeding condition like hemophilia, ginger can actually make you bleed more if you were to get a cut. This also goes for anyone taking blood thinners.
Gallstones
Ginger naturally stimulates the gallbladder into producing more bile, so if you have gallstone ginger can make the condition worse. If you have had, or currently have gallstones, you should avoid ginger.
Ulcers
Eating fresh ginger can lead to worsening symptoms of an ulcer or intestinal blockage because gingers stimulates digestion.
Pregnant Women
You should consult with a physician before taking any supplements while pregnant, but ginger is one that you should avoid. Because of the stimulation of circulation that ginger provides, it can make it harder for your body to absorb nutrients, and can cause uterine contractions.
High Blood Pressure
Ginger naturally lowers blood pressure, so if it taken in conjunction with other blood pressure medications, it can cause a crash in blood pressure.
Diabetes
Again, ginger is dangerous to take with other drugs that are already balancing blood sugars, because it naturally lowers blood sugar by itself.
Before Surgery
This is again, because of the increased blood flow, which can lead to increased bleeding during a surgery.
In Combination with Certain Herbs
Ginger's effects can be magnified by other herbs that ado the same things that ginger does like preventing blood clots, or increasing circulation. Garlic, ginkgo, turmeric, and ginseng all improve circulation and can increase your risks of bleeding if combined with ginger.
Ginger in and of itself is one of the healthiest substances you can put in your body, but you need to be careful what you mix it with. Ginger almost works too well by itself as it is! As you can see most of these side-effects are based on other chemicals that you are putting in to your body, and not just the ginger.
