The full moon in Chitra: A full moon is considered auspicious in many religions because of its effects on the attitude of people. Full moon is said to promote creativity and positive sentiments. Sentiments are said to ride on higher waves of consciousness leading to abundance of positive energy and higher consciousness.

An exalted Sun in Aries: The solar calendar begins with an exalted Sun in Aries, a favorable position in the sky that can provide the most benefic results to Earth. So it is a mighty Sun, fully empowered to bring about its good effects.

The Day of Chitragupta: In Hinduism, Chitragupta is the assistant of lord Yama. He is the record keeper of good and bad deeds or karmas of human beings on earth. It is believed that when a person dies, Chitragupta immediately makes a thorough check of the list of bad and good karmas of the person and passes the message to Lord Yama for final decision on the soul of the person.
The name Chitra gupta also signifies the hidden (gupta) pictures (Chitra) of deeds of every human on earth. On this day, when the Sun and Moon create powerful energy around earth plane, the effect on humans are said to be profound. The concept of Chitragupta being vigil on the activities of humans on Earth is to tell humans on Earth not to commit any sin, especially on such an auspicious day. This will help in preserving goodness of mind and good will in the hearts of people by urging them to commit to good actions only.

Legend of Chitragupta: Once lord Indra and his teacher Brihaspati had an argument and Indra ignored his teacher's advice. Thereafter, Brihaspati became reticent and refrained from advising Indra. Indra began to commit many mistakes. After his long absence, Brihaspati returned and asked Indra to make a pilgrimage to Earth to lessen the burden of his sins. After coming to Earth, he realized that he had been redeemed of his sins and thought Lord Shiva to have absolved him of bad karmas. Indra found a Shiva linga and began to pray with a golden lotus on the day of Chitra Pournami.

Worshipping Chitragupta: Special puja is arranged in temples on this day such as the Chitragupta temple in Kanchipuram, Airavateshwarar temple in Darasuram, Chandra Mouliswar temple in Thiruvakkarai and others.
When you pray to God for the purpose of dissolving your past sins with sincerity and devotion, your prayers will be answered. With your prayer to the higher energy, you also resolve not to commit acts which are considered as sins in our society. Thus your urge and willingness to cleanse your Karmas which stand as obstruction in your way for fulfillment of your desires take you closer to God, to seek blessings for being forgiven.

Ways to dissolve your karma: The essence of worship on this day is the sincere effort to liberate yourself from the clutches of negative energies.
Various ways to dissolve karma:
·         On this day, you can meditate on the story of Indra and his Guru Brihaspati.
·         Worship Shiva or Chitragupta with incense, camphor, flowers.
·         Feed the poor and the needy.

Chitra Poornima 2016
Full Moon days are auspicious to gain Chitragupta's blessings to wash away all your sins and to bag the virtue for the life beyond!
In 2016, Chitra Poornima falls on April 21st (IST).
Astrological Significance of Chitra Poornima 2016
On this day, the Moon is in the star Chitra, ruled by Mars. Chitra is one of the few asterisms represented by a single star and is one of the brightest stars in the sky. Superficially, Chitra means "artful."
The Sanskrit word "Chitra" also means "illusory, visually exciting, or magical." In keeping with its name, its symbol is a bright and shining jewel.
Chitra Poornima is the right day to initiate actions to create new wealth and new destiny for you. While the star lord Mars, positioned in his own sign, Scorpio, emphasizes the fructification of efforts, his sharing the sign with Saturn shows that you have to work meticulously with a deep sense of gratitude to the creator for receiving countless blessings so far. The Mars-Saturn combination in the 2nd House to the Moon helps you receive the spark of divine grace and takes you to higher level of spiritualism.
This star represents beauty and richness on one hand. On the other hand, it also compels us to delve into our own pleasure-seeking nature. All evils happen due to overindulgences in sensory pleasures.
Chitragupta, the assistant of Lord Yama, is the record keeper of good and bad deeds or karmas of human beings on Earth.
The concept of Chitragupta being vigil on the activities of humans on Earth is to tell humans on Earth not to commit any sin, especially on such an auspicious day. This will help in preserving goodness of mind and goodwill in the hearts of people by urging them to commit to good actions only, thus not getting our souls entrapped in the birth-and-death cycle, until the karma is exhausted.
Knowing the underlying philosophy of the star Chitra and being watchful of the intricate functioning of our minds, thoughts, and actions will evolve our conscious nature to higher levels.
The "Jewel" can thus be seen as the apex of man's striving for beauty, perfection, and goodness in life. Chitra is also called the star of opportunity.
The prayers should be focused on attaining freedom from ambiguity, judgements, and discriminatory nature, because this is the perfect day to come out of your illusions and maya. This is the right day to chip away bad thoughts and karma and accumulate good ones by doing good deeds to deserving people.
Legend of Chitra Poornima
According to Vedic tradition, Brihaspati is the guru, or preceptor, of Lord Indra, the King of the Gods. Once, Indra disobeyed his Guru, and so Brihaspati, in order to teach a lesson to Indra, temporarily gave his advisor role to Indra. During the Guru's absence, Indra did many evil deeds. When Brihaspati resumed his duty, Indra wanted to know what he should do to expiate the wrongs he did in his Guru's absence. Brihaspati told Indra to go on a pilgrimage.
While Indra was on the pilgrimage, one day he suddenly felt that the load of sins had been taken off his shoulders at a place near Madurai in South India. After investigation, Indra discovered a Shiva linga there. Indra attributed the miracle to this linga and immediately constructed a temple on the site. When Indra proceeded to worship the linga, Lord Shiva magically created golden lotuses in a nearby pond. Indra was greatly pleased and blessed. The day on which Indra worshipped Shiva was Chitra Poornima.
Reserve a Place in Heaven!
It is known that any sin can be nullified by doing good to the victim and through sincere prayers and powerful remedies. Participating in the Chitra Poornima rituals will help you wash out your sins and reserve a special place for you in heaven.
Chitragupta not only makes an account of the bad deeds, but any attempt at remedying those sins is also taken into consideration. He helps us reap good rewards and avoid punishment after death. Your sin can be forgiven if you repent sincerely, vowing not to repeat the errors, and pray to Chitragupta with faith and devotion.
Gain the Power to Be a Purified Soul!
A supreme remedy to terminate your karma is donation. Giving away things like food, clothes, books, money, or anything that would serve a purpose for a suffering heart is considered great to become a purified soul. Making sincere donations to the needy and poor is like compound interest for good karma.

Chitra Pournami and Chitragupta Pooja

When the Sun is exalted in Aries and the Moon is aligned with the star Chitra in the constellation Libra, you can appeal to the accountant of Yamapuri 'palace of God of Death' (where you enter after your death) to improve your scores for a favorable decision on the final Judgment Day.
Chitragupta is the celestial accountant who keeps track of our good and bad deeds in an eternal book called the Akashic Records. After death when a soul goes to Yama, Chitragupta examines this record book and informs Lord Yama how the soul fared during its stay on earth. Accordingly, Yama delivers his judgment, whether to award liberation or to send it for another round of grinding on earth to make amends for misdoings.

Significance of Chitra Pournami

Birthday of Chitragupta is celebrated on Chitra Pournami in the Tamil month of Chitirai (April – May) and this year it falls on May 4th, IST. On this day the Full Moon aligns with one of the brightest stars in the sky, Chitra. By synchronizing with the energies of the day you can send your prayers to Chitragupta and earn points to improve your scores in the celestial record book.
Here is what is special about Chitra Pournami –
·         Full Moon promotes creativity, abundance and manifestation of desires. It will encourage you to be positive and perform good deeds

·         Libra is a sign of justice. It studies the actions and activities with equanimity and balances even difficult situations.
·         It is the birthday of Chitragupta, the accountant of Yama, the God of death. Birthdays of deities are special days when their energies can be easily accessed.

How Shiva Relieved Lord Indra of his sins

Once, lord Indra, the king of the Gods had an argument with his teacher Brihaspati (Jupiter). Indra ignored his teacher's advice and started committing sins. In order to lessen the burden of sins, Brihaspati advised Indra to go on a pilgrimage to the Earth. During the pilgrimage Indra suddenly felt being redeemed of his sins. He found himself standing close to a Shiva linga under a Kadamba tree and realized Lord Shiva helped him in relieving his sins. He worshipped Shiva with a golden lotus which he found in a nearby pond. It was the day of Chitra Pournami

Birth of Chitragupta

As per the legends, Lord Brahma entrusted Lord Yama with the task to determine the fate of the souls coming to him. Yama not able to keep track would often send the wrong souls to either hell or heaven. To solve the problem, Brahma created Chitragupta through meditation. He was named Chitragupta as he was first conceived in Brahma's mind through a chitra or picture and this was kept gupt (secret) from the Gods.

Chitragupta Pooja

There are few temples dedicated to Chitragupta in parts of India. Special rituals are organized in Chitragupta temple in Kanchipuram, Airavateshwarar temple in Darasuram, Chandra Mouliswar temple in Thiruvakkarai on this day.
Members of the 'kayastha' community perform Dawat (inkpot) pooja to worship Chitragupta, who is considered as the progenitor of the community. They have a tradition of writing down their earnings on a piece of paper along with an expected amount they will require the next year. This piece of paper is offered along with other offerings like paper and pen, ink, honey, betel nut, matches, mustard, sugar etc. to worship Chitragupta.

How to improve your karmic record

A sincere prayer to the God (be it Chitragupta, Shiva or any deity close to your heart) on this day will help you to atone for misdoings. The prayer should be offered along with a resolve not to commit acts which are considered as sins in our society. Taking bath in holy rivers, observing fast and praying are some of the practices that are followed.
Giving away foods, clothes, books, money or anything that can help a poor or needy is considered extremely beneficial to accrue merits to secure a place in the heaven.
