[www.keralites.net] V Krishnan, 60, Farmer reaps record harvest on 1 acre massive 4,500 kg of paddy

V Krishnan, 60, Farmer reaps record harvest on 1 acre massive 4,500 kg of paddy :- By employing a modern technology, for which the Coimbatore Agricultural University honoured him with the 'Velanmai Semmal' award. In the traditional method, about 2,000 to 3,000 kg can be harvested in an acre.
V Krishnan, 60, of Kulamangalam on the outskirts of the city, said he had been farming since the age of 25, a few years after he completed his PUC.
When new technology was introduced in the district way back in 2009-2010, farmers were urged to go in for planting of paddy seedlings using machines. But many were reluctant to do so. When the district administration urged them to try it on half an acre, Krishnan came forward and tried it on 2.5 acres and was richly rewarded.

"Using machines we can plant seedlings which are 15 days old, whereas in the conventional method they have to be 30 days old. With the machine, the seedlings can be planted in a uniform manner, ensuring equal sunlight and air for all.

"In the traditional method, the crops near the irrigation channel grow better than those in the centre of the field," he said.
Water management is done judiciously; instead of continuously pumping water into the fields, seedlings are irrigated whenever they require water. Krishnan says solar power is another reason why he is getting better returns. "Solar pumps are miracle machines, nothing goes wrong even if they pump water continuously as long as there is sunlight; so it has done away with the need to pay four workers to maintain motors,'' he said. Also, with power available free of cost, he is saving Rs 5,000 to 7,000 per acre. Solar pumps have also helped him to cultivate for three seasons last year, getting three crops, the last of which will be harvested this month.

Krishnan is also the recipient of the Progressive Farmer Award of Madurai, the central government award for the best harvest in the five-acre category, in 2012, when he reaped a whopping 4,800 kg, beating farmers from across the country. This farmer says that he cultivates long grain varieties  Trichy 3, C R 1009, when he enters a competition and smaller grains  JGL otherwise.
