This marriage has gone to the dogs. But they're not complaining, the dogs that is. As bizarre as it sounds, two Labradors have driven a wedge between a couple with the wife walking out of her marital home after being asked to choose between her pets and family.

According to the husband, his wife was inseparable from her pets, so much so that the canines also shared the bed with them. The constant presence of the dogs began irking the in-laws too who finally issued an ultimatum. The husband is now in a fix over buying peace with his wife by accepting the pets as part of the package deal or taking sides with his parents.

The Bengaluru-based family of four, residing at HSR Layout, complain they had not bargained for a tectonic shift in their lives when they fixed the marriage of their older son, Nimish, 30, a techie with an MNC, with Kavya, 26, (both names changed). The girl, who hails from Kochi, is also an IT professional. The marriage took place in January 2014.
"Both sides were very happy about the marriage. But when Kavya came with her luggage a week after the marriage, everyone was shocked to see she had brought along two Labradors. The husband and in-laws thought the dogs were temporary house guests. But when weeks passed by and it appeared the dogs would take up permanent residence, the in-laws protested," says a police official from East Division police station, where a case was first lodged.

"She clearly said the dogs were her life and she would not send them back. The case reached us and we transferred it to Mahila Sahayavani at the police commissioner's office," the official added.

Rani Shetty, who heads Mahila Sahayavani, isn't shocked or surprised.
"Pets are the cause of many a break-up. Mahila Sahayavani has taken up this particular case too after local police transferred it to us."
Shetty says Kavya was very attached to the dogs, but her in-laws wanted her to make alternative arrangements for the animals as they found it difficult to have them around 24/7. "When we called her for counselling, she refused to send them back to her native."
According to the complaint filed by Kavya's in-laws, the dogs used to stray into the pooja room and sit on the sofa. Her husband's grouse was that had to share the bedroom with her four-legged companions. "When Nimish objected, she reportedly said the dogs would stay and, if he did not like the arrangement, he could go out and sleep," says Shetty.
Nimish has told the counsellors like Mary's lambs, the dogs followed them to dinners, parties and all social dos, leading to problems in their marital life. He said he never got a private moment with his wife due to the canines' overbearing presence.

When the flashpoint occurred a few weeks ago and her in-laws asked her to choose between the dogs or her husband and his family, she decided to move out with her pets.
Counsellors say there's been a thaw between both sides following counselling sessions, but Kavya remains adamant she will go back only if her pets are accepted too.
