Located in the capital city of Bhubaneshwar, Mukteswara temple is an abode of Lord Shiva. About 35 meters in height, this ancient structure is considered to be an important landmark in the study of the history of temples in Odisha.
The history of the Mukteshwara temple dates back to the 10 century, making it one of the oldest temples in Odisha. The fine architectural design and the exceptionally beautiful carvings are the most impressive features of this temple. The temple has been artistically chiseled out of sandstone. The interiors of the temple are embraced with several shrines and sculpture images. The porch of the temple or the arched gateway is an important part of the temple which asserts the influence of Buddhist architecture in Odisha.
The Madicha Kunda tank in the premises of the Mukteswara temple holds great religious importance for the people of Odisha. As a popular belief, a dip in the holy water of the pond can even bless barren women with sons. Every year, a Mukteswara Dance Festival is organized by the Deprtment of tourism. Though small in structure, the Mukteswara temple draws a large number of visitors every year, some of whom come to get their wishes fulfilled and some to adore the beauty of this architectural masterpiece.
