Rashmita Guha A twisted spine, blindness in one eye, a swollen heart, weakening lungs, classmates' taunts... All the medical advice said she would be deformed for life, but Rashmita simply refused to give up. Her teachers 'advised' her to drop a year, but she responded with 80% in ICSE this year.
"More than the physical problems, I was upset with the tease and taunts on my deformity. For some time I lost my self esteem because of the humiliation. Even at school, classmates would write me off, saying that someone who could not stand on her feet was not worthy of being counted. But I proved them wrong," said Rashmita, who dreams of being a columnist. "I love life. I love everything about life," she gushes.

The girl from Belur in Howrah was born with Marfin's Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder. By age 14 the disease had affected her heart, lungs, retina and spine. She lost vision in her left eye and an aortic root dilation had swelled her heart to twice its size. To make it worse, kyphoscoliosis, a progressively deforming curvature of the spine, had twisted her body and rendered her immobile.

Doctors started fearing for her life. Even 40 years ago, Marfin's Syndrome cut life expectancy by a third. Prognosis wasn't good for Rashmita. But her determination inspired a team of doctors to try out two risky but life changing surgeries on her. They warned her that it might fail and the consequences would be terrible, but she decided to push ahead.
