Mark Twain was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age," and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature. Twain began his career writing light, humorous verse, but evolved into a chronicler of the vanities, hypocrisies and murderous acts of mankind. At mid-career, with Huckleberry Finn, he combined rich humor, sturdy narrative and social criticism. Twain was a master at rendering colloquial speech and helped to create and popularize a distinctive American literature built on American themes and language. Many of Twain's works have been suppressed at times for various reasons. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been repeatedly restricted in American high schools, not least for its frequent use of the word "nigger," which was in common usage in the pre-Civil War period in which the novel was set. A complete bibliography of his works is nearly impossible to compile because of the vast number of pieces written by Twain (often in obscure newspapers) and his use of several different pen names. Additionally, a large portion of his speeches and lectures have been lost or were not written down; thus, the collection of Twain's works is an ongoing process. Researchers rediscovered published material by Twain as recently as 1995. A classic is something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read. A dollar picked up in the road is more satisfaction to us than the 99 which we had to work for, and the money won at Faro or in the stock market snuggles into our hearts in the same way. A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval. A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way. Adam and Eve had many advantages, but the principal one was that they escaped teething. After all these years, I see that I was mistaken about Eve in the beginning; it is better to live outside the Garden with her than inside it without her. Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. All right, then, I'll go to hell. Any emotion, if it is sincere, is involuntary. As to the adjective, when in doubt, strike it out. Baccarat is a game whereby the croupier gathers in money with a flexible sculling oar, then rakes it home. If I could have borrowed his oar I would have stayed. Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint. Be careless in your dress if you will, but keep a tidy soul. Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society. Do the thing you fear most and the death of fear is certain. Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first. Drag your thoughts away from your troubles... by the ears, by the heels, or any other way you can manage it. Education consists mainly of what we have unlearned. Every time you stop a school, you will have to build a jail. What you gain at one end you lose at the other. It's like feeding a dog on his own tail. It won't fatten the dog. Familiarity breeds contempt - and children. Get your facts first, and then you can distort 'em as much as you please. Go to Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company. God: The most popular scapegoat for our sins. Habit is habit, and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time. I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.
