[www.keralites.net] Khatte-mitten khabhrain from around the world for 3/9/13

News of the day..

Vodafone to rake in a massive windfall of 150 billion dollars from selling its 45% stake to Verizon Wireless, the US mobile operator.

(Me: In comparison, India's trade gap, the so-called CAD - is only about 60-70 billion.  Since Vodafone has a major presence in the country, why not muskofy the company to invest part of its loot (unexpected fortunes, yaars!!) in India?  For starters, we could humour Vodafon by soft-pedaling the billion+ tax issue or giving it up totally…)

TV weather news..

"A tornado warning has been issued for Washington, DC, as political spin continue to escalate"

Mother:  Akshay, why does your geography exam paper have a big zero over it?

Akshay:  It is not a zero, mom.  The teacher ran out of stars, so she gave me a moon instead!

Tongue in cheek…

From the world of science…

Lifelogging camera Weblogs your life..

When Martin Kaellstroem was a young adult, he lost both his parents to cancer.  It became a spur for him to seize the day, as a person and an entrepreneur.  The result: A lens with no off-button that captures every moment of your life.  The 38-old co-founder of Swedish company Memoto is a man in a hurry as he promotes his 'lifelogging" camera, which is worn with a clip on the shirt or on a string around the neck, and takes a picture once every 30 seconds.

Life expectancy gap growing between rich and poor women: WHO report.

Life expectancy at 50 has improved, but the gap between poor and rich countries is growing and could worsen without better detection and treatment of cardiovascular disease and cancers, the WHO said on Monday.  The WHO study has found in weather countries deaths from non-communicable diseases has fallen dramatically in recent decades, especially from cancers of the stomach, colon, breast and cervix.

(Me: In third world countries like India, poverty is a lot compounded by massive over-population.  While the desperate need of the hour is population control by any means, the TOI, the most 'progressive' and largest of newspapers, talked of lofty ideals – utterly misplaced given our resource crunch - of Indians freedom to procreate like there is no tomorrow, and it is the country's duty – read, the tax-payers' – to feed them.  Ironically, the same paper a few days earlier also pointed out editorially that 50% of Indian kids (an utter understatement) are stunted due to lack of proper lavatories and faecal matter contaminating drinking water and food)

How important is fiber in the diet?

In one study, the fiber from just one cup of oatmeal per day appeared to extend a woman's life by as much as jogging four hours per week.  About half of the fiber in oatmeal is soluble, and half insoluble.  New research has shown that the antioxidants in oats keep blood cells from sticking to artery walls.

Using a cotton ball, apply fresh lemon juice on acne and leave it overnight.  Wash with water the following morning to get rid of it.

Don't read from a backlit device at night, as it interfered with the production of melatonin, the sleep cycle-regulating hormone.

Believe it a lot!

Woman gets 298 yrs jail for adultery in Taiwan…

A Taiwanese widow who face the theoretical possibility of 298 years in jail for an affair with a married man has rekindled the debate over the island's controversial adultery laws.  The woman, 56, who was not herself married during the five-year affair with her neighbor, was told she must serve years in jail or pay a fine of $24,300.  But court officials said she had faced the possibility of 298 years in jail after judges used confessions from the pair o estimate they had held a total of 894 trusts in various motel rooms.

Crocodile 'stalks' man for 2 weeks.

Sydney: A New Zealand tourist has returned to safety after being menaced by a crocodile off Western Australia for two weeks.  The man became stranded on an islandbecause the reptile stalked him when he tried to leave by kayak, rescuer Don Macleod told broadcaster ABC.  Macleoid said he rescued he man on Saturday afer spotting a light on Governor Island, near Kalumburu.  The crocodile was around six m (20 f.) long.  The unidentified New Zealander had planned to kayak back to the mainland.  But he 'came to the conclusion very quickly that he couldn't get off Governor Island without attracting crocodile.  It started following him around so he made in back to the island.

Fleeing cops, bank robber falls 21 floors down garbage chute.

New York: A bank robber, fleeing from police in an apartment building, tried to hide in a garbage chute but plunged 21 floors into trash in the basement.  Chased by cops, Robin Gutheridge, 26, entered Clinton Plaza Apartments after robbing a nearby  Chase Bank branch.  Police were searching the building when a maintenance worker told them he heard someone calling for help from a garbage chute in the basement.  Officers checked it out and found Gutheridge trapped in the compactor.

A quote for our times…

"The ultimate authority must always rest with the individual's own reason and critical analysis" – The Dalai Lama

(Me: the proviso or limiting clause is, provided the individual is, both, educated AND uses his common sense.  Alas, much of our political class, even those educated ones, doesn't seem to use its).
