[www.keralites.net] Khatte-mitten khabhrain from around the world for 21/8/13

An idea that is put into action is more important than idea that exists only as an idea.

**

From the world of science…

Three cups of milk or yoghurt a day can fulfill the calcium requirements of adults up to 50 years of age.

**

Children should rinse their mouth every time they have a sweet or some candy. This helps prevent cavities.

**

Copper plays key role in Alzheimer's disease…

Researchers have showed that copper can accumulate in the brain and cause the blood brain barrier to break down, resulting in the toxic accumulation of the protein amyloid beta a by-product of cellular activity. It may be responsible for the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

(Me: hmmmm. Theres some belief in our part that water left overnight in a copper tumbler and drunk in the morning has a beneficial effect on diabetics…)

**

Now, a robot companion for your grandma…

Washington: Scientists have developed a robot companion for the elderly that keeps a tab on whether your loved ones are taking their medication or getting enough physical exercise.

**

Weird world

Man banned from all farms after having sex with goat…

London: An English man who had sex with a goat has been banned from every farm in the country in a bid to protect the animals. Robert N, 23, initially denied having intercourse with the goat at a farm in Wiltshire in April.

Thai University makes students wear anti-cheating has/

One of Thailand's top ranked universities, Kasetsar University, is under fire forsaking its students to wear anti-cheating blinkers to curb cheating in exams.

**

Women never wear 75% of their shoes…

The most common reason women gave for why they didn't wear now shoes was because they turned out to be too high or too tight.

**

Japanese bra vending machines with built-in bust-sizers..

A Japanese lingerie company has launched vending machines that have a bus-sizing chart for women who are worried about finding the right size.

**

International News…

Hosni Mubarak, who was accused of being public enemy/villain No.1 and sentenced to life imprisonment by the previous governement in spite him of being terminally ill, set free, while in neighbouring Pakistan, Musharraf is charged with a former PM's murder.

What does one make of it? One really can't…

Tongue very much in cheek...

If you ever see me getting thrashed by cops, put down that camera and come help me!

News of last week, still being talked about…

Submarine sinks off the coast of Mumbai, 8 Navymen perish several others still untraceable. Costs country hundreds of crores, as it was a new acquisition from Russia

Speculation doing the rounds includes internal sabotage, blast/explosives, enemy action (sunk by torpedoes), etc.

The Russians who built the submarine rubbishing these theories say the cause is most likely to be inadequate precautions in maintaining the batteries. This cannot be ruled out judging from our laissez fairies ways – our sab-chalta-hai attitude – even in matters national security and security of people. An example: two top floors of Mantralaya building, the State Secretariat, were gutted in a massive fire due to gross laxity in fire safety precautions: huge numbers of files haphazardly strewn everywhere, the passages, aisles, passages, lift shafts and every inch of space were clogged with combustible wares like discarded wooden furniture, packing material, etc.

Pity is, even our armed forces that are supposed to be a byword for discipline and orderliness everywhere within its precincts (that's how the term, 'military discipline, precision n efficiency' came into wide use), are no different from the rest of our countrymen. And if this isn't enough the dead and injured navy cadres who worked the calamity on themselves are treated like heroes, and the media keep showering glowing tributes…

News of the day…

Train runs over 37 pilgrims crossing tracks in Bihar… Mob thrashes driver, sets bogies ablaze.

Cancer patient killed during temple trip. A cancer patient from Bengal was killed after falling between a train and the platform at Mahalaxmi. The 46-year-old man was in Mumbai to visit temples as thanksgiving, as his treatment was almost over.

(Me: pilgrims were wantonly trespassing and could be charged for it, yet people beat up the driver and cause damage to the railway property worth crores. Only in India…

During the recent floods in the North, the idols of the two most revered shrines got washed away. The 'Gods' couldn't save themselves, yet devotees worship them for safety, security and prosperity for themselves and their family….. In the second case, the oncologists saved the patient from the dreaded cancer, and he lost his life at a railway station that is named after the famous Goddess Mahalaxmi who is the presiding deity of the place)

Tongue very much in cheek…

"All sins are attempts to fill voids" –Simone Weil

**

Line Maro…

I don't think much, but when I do, I think of you.

(Me: she doesn't think much of u, either!)

**

Sarah: Hey, Do you know which dog keeps the best time?

Tom: No idea! Which one is it?

Sarah: It is a watch dog!

**

"A riot is the language of the unheard" – Martin Luther King, Jr.

(Me: that may have been the case in the 1950s or 60s. Now we have riots for anything n everything: some rumour abt some unpleasant incident in far-away Timbuktoo, a not-so-favourable news about a local dada, a patient dies in a hospital not responding to the best treatment, etc. and a crowd of a few hundred – hired or spontaneously gathered – go on the rampage..)

Super duper humour…!

An angel suddenly appears at a college faculty meeting and tells the dean that in return for his exemplary behavior, he will be given his choice of infinite wealth, wisdom or beauty.

The dean picks infinite wisdom.

"Done!" says the angel and disappears.

All heads now turn toward the clean, who in all wisdom, slowly says, "I should have taken the money."

(Me: Whatever sham altruistic people may say, wise people always back the greenbacks yani ki hard cash!)

A quote for us in India…

There is very strong historical data that suggests the way societies grow is by making large, long-term investments." – Fareed Zakaria.

(Yep, very much true. The country must invest heavily in research and development and come out with original inventions, not plagiarize or pirate others ideas like the generic drugs)
