[www.keralites.net] Samidha Khandare - 24-yr-old with brain tuberculosis receives MBBS degree in ICU

Samidha Khandare froze with emotion as she accepted her convocation certificate lying on a bed in Sion hospital's intensive care unit.

Partly smiling, partly sobbing, the 24-year-old who was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis of the brain, humbly accepted the medical degree as her mother and brother stood by, the tears clouding their sight. The convocation gown and hat stood in stark contrast to the white hospital bedsheets.

As Samidha, who was hospitalised a week ago, was unable to make it to the convocation ceremony, hospital dean Dr Suleiman Merchant dropped by to hand over the certificate to the young medico.

Samidha's brother, Dr Shekhar, said she was diagnosed with military tuberculosis in January.

Military or disseminated tuberculosis is a contagious bacterial infection in which bacteria spread from the lungs to other parts through blood.

"Samidha was hospitalised and discharged after a few weeks but had to be admitted again. A scan has shown tuberculosis of the brain," said Shekhar, adding that Samidha is suspected to have multi-drug resistance tuberculosis.

Samidha, who hails from Akola district, stayed at the hostel for undergraduate students on the hospital premises. She is the thirteenth health care professional from Sion hospital to be diagnosed with tuberculosis.

Two of these have multi-drug resistant strain of the disease. Sources at the hospital said that besides 11 resident doctors, about five senior doctors and eight paramedical staff also have tuberculosis. DNA had reported in its June 15 edition last year about five doctors from Sion hospital having contracted the infection in less than six months.

Dr Merchant said that since Samidha was the only student who would skip the ceremony, they wanted to make it a special moment for her by handing it over at the hospital. "Samidha has been recovering well and we may shift her to the general ward in a couple of days or so," said Dr Merchant.
