Abhishek gets top marks in exam after studying while working in fields and cycling 16 kilometres to school each day.
The top position in the Class X examination conducted by the Bihar School Examination Board this year was taken by a paanwallah's son who battled odds to secure the distinction.

Abhishek Kumar, a student of Hit Narayan Kshatriya High School, Ara in Bhojpur district, scored 91.8 per cent in the matriculation exam, the results of which were declared on Wednesday.

"I worked hard for the examination. But I had never thought I would get the top position," an elated Abhishek said.
Abhishek had faced acute financial constraints to pursue his studies.

His father Suresh Prasad, ran a small kiosk selling paan (betel) and khaini (chewing tobacco) to eke out a livelihood for his family of five.

However, Prasad never restrained himself from supporting his son or two daughters.

Abhishek, for his part, studied 12 to 14 hours a day, worked in the fields and helped with household chores.

He cycled 16 km every day to attend classes at his school and at a coaching centre.

He also faced other problems such as studying under the light of lantern.

However he followed a strict regimen in his preparation - waking up at 4 am to study till 10 am, working in the fields during the day before resuming preparations till he fell asleep at night.
"I gave up playing cricket and kabaddi as my examination drew closer," he said.

Abhishek has now set his sights on a career in civil services.

"I know I cannot pursue engineering or medical because of financial constraints but I will try my best to become an IAS officer," he said.
