[www.keralites.net] Khatte-mitten khabhrain from around the world for 17/5/13

PM's total savings of Rs.3 crore in Fixed Deposits.

(Me: Manmohan Singh is reputed to be one of the foremost economists of the country and is credited with presenting the game-changing Budget in the early 1990s that accelerated the country's growth to over 10% year-on-year consistently for over a decade and catapulted the stockmarket index, the SENSEX, to dizzying heights. But he himself doesn't invest in the stockmarket but prefers the absolute safety of bank fixed deposits…)

Not so Earth-shaking news, this…

8-column banner headlines in all in our newspapers.

Three cricket heroes caught with their pants down in spot-fixing.

(Me: What is most surprising to the discerning is how the news is so surprising; in a country where dishonesty and bribe-taking with impunity are the order of the day, the all-too-greedy cricketers – in a mega sport that rakes in mindboggling sums – cannot be exceptions..)

Mind chow.

Where there is love thee is life.

Line Maro

You are so sweet you could put Hershey's out of business.

(Me: yep, am pricey too, and priced out of your budget)

From the world of science…

Now, send money as 'attachment' via gmail..

London: Sending and receiving money was never this easy. In a series of other announcements that Google made at its annual developer conference, it also announced a major addition to its emailing service, which is, users can now send money as an attachment with the integration of Google Wallet and email. All that a user needs to do is hit the dollar symbol in the attachment and enter the amount. One can send money to even those who do not have a Gmail account. This feature will be rolled out to the US Gmail users above 18 years in the coming months.

(Me: WOW, what inventions can do!)
**
Want a long, healthy life? Don't plan to retire early…

London: Retirement has a 'drastic' on impact on mental and physical health, a ground-breaking study has found.

**
What are the symptoms of a vitamin B12 deficiency?

Symptoms include weakness, low energy, confusion, sleep problems, indigestion, hearing and vision loss, memory problems, irritability, mood swings, dizziness, light-headedness, tingling in extremities and low immunity.

**
A combination of black tea and burnt toast can easily cure food poisoning.

**

Rubbing the oil of lemon eucalyptus on your skin can protect you from insect bites.

**

Weird world…

Gun nut invokes Gandhi for right to bear arms…

A US gun rights activist invoking Mahatma Gandhi, the apostle of non-violence, by asking 1,000 supporters to mark into the American capital on July 4 Independence Day carrying loaded rifles. Adam Kokesh, 31, who according to media reports, "has a history of rabble-rousing and self-promotion' has vowed to respond with satyagraha', if the capital police block the protesters against 'tyranny' from crossing into Washington.

(Me: an ultimate irony!)

**

Two mayoral candidates toss coin to decide winner.

Manila: What do you do when two candidates running for mayor in the Philipines get exactly the same number of votes? You get them to toss a coin. Marvic Feraren and Boyet Py both received 3,236 votes for mayor of San Teodoro town in Mindoro Oriental province in Monday's elections.

Feraren finally won on Tuesday, but not before a second round of coin flipping!

Couple gets 24 years' jail for starving maid to death:

A Malaysia couple were sentenced to 24 years jail each for starving their 24-year-old maid to death.
Tweet of the day: @suheleseth "Am quite amazed that the Supreme Court says daughters-in-law shouldn't be treated like maids! Maids shouldn't be treated poorly either!"

One woman to another: "My happiest memory is when my baby was born. I lost 12 pounds that day!"

A guy walks in to the Barbershop.

Barber says, "What will it be today?"

Guy says, "Well I want it going with my waves on top, faded on one side, plug the other, and just make it all out of shape and messed up."

Barber says, "Now why in the world do you want your hair cut like that?"

Guy says, "That's how you cut it last time.

Think it over..

"Together we can make a world where cancer no longer means living with fear, without hope, or worse" – Patrick Swayze

(Me: Yes, some day, we can)

**

"Distracted from distraction by distraction" – TS Eliot

**

"We've often talked about educating and mentoring. I suspect fear might be a stronger option. Fear of very stringent punishment" – Harsha Bhogle on the spot-fixing scandal in IPL.

(Me: Me, for one, is with him. Regardless of whatever the Rights groups and the others of their persuasion may say, fear of capital punishment does deter potential perpetrators of heinous crimes like murders and rapes)
