Preparing for the 2012 Paralympics
The 2012 Summer Paralympic Games begin tonight in London with Queen Elizabeth II officially opening the Games at the Opening Ceremony in London. An estimated 4,200 athletes representing 167 countries are expected to compete in the Games, designed for athletes with physical disabilities. They will compete in 20 sports, ranging from cycling, powerlifting, and judo, to wheelchair rugby and goalball. In the UK, Channel 4 is inviting viewers to "Meet the Superhumans," and it plans to broadcast 150 hours of Paralympic programming between now and the Closing Ceremony on September 9. Viewers online can also watch hundreds of hours of live video from the International Paralympic Committee at paralympic.org. Gathered here are images of the athletes and organizers as they ready themselves for the 2012 Summer Paralympics -- more coverage to come as the Games progress. [40 photos]

U.S. Army Sgt. Josh Olson, on the shooting range after practice at Fort Benning, Georgia, on May 30, 2012. Olson was on a routine patrol in Tal Afar, Iraq, when a grenade that was lobbed at his Humvee exploded. He lost his right leg in the attack, and would end up spending 18 months at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. It was during that time that he took a trip to a shooting range, and impressed officials from the U.S. Army with his marksmanship, becoming the first athlete with a physical disability to be nominated to the Army's World Class Athlete Program. Now, Olson is setting his sights on a gold medal at the Paralympic Games in London.(AP Photo/David Goldman) #

Japanese disabled sprinter Maya Nakanishi poses in this handout picture featured in her calendar in Tokyo, on February 7, 2012. Nakanishi, who will compete in the 2012 London Paralympic Games, published a calendar featuring her posing semi-nude with her prosthetic leg to help fund her training and trip to the Games. Nakanishi lost her right leg below the knee in a workplace accident when she was 21, then became a sprinter with her prosthetic limb. She is the Asian record holder in the T44 (one leg amputated below the knee) 200 meter and long jump and she was the first Japanese woman to be at the start line in a 100 meter final race in the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Olympics. But with little financial assistance, she made up her mind to pose herself partially nude in her calendar to fund her trip to compete in London. (Reuters/Ochitakao) #
