Female Drinkers are on increase in Thrissur

Drinking alcohol is no longer a 'privilege' for men alone in the city since reports about alarming increase in the number of female drinkers coming from nook and cranny of the cultural capital of Kerala. According to the sources, alcoholism among women in the district is on the rise in the district. It has been reported that more than 10% of the women population in the district consume liquor. Interestingly, it is learnt that two percent among them became alcoholic. A clear example pointing out the importance of this issue was the first case registered in a Woman Police station, Thrissur. It was against a woman for driving after consuming liquor. The police officials said that they had experiences on people telling that women used to buy liquor from beverages in the night by coming in car. Officials added that complaints of violence in family after alcohol consumption by women were also reported in the Women Police station. When contacted, excise officials acknowledged the report and added that they have limitations to publish such reports owing to various reasons. Experts say that alcoholism consumption cases were also come for counseling in such centres. According to a counselor, "many children are coming for counseling affected with the alcohol consumption of their mothers." She added that the issue can cause trouble if increased drastically. According to Dr Sreeparvathy, "alcohol consumption on a regular basis will result in serious health issues especially in the case of women. Consumption of alcohol by pregnant women will affect the mother and the fetus and it is very unsafe." She added that such habits would create psychiatric problems too. As per the reports, women are more vulnerable than men to alcohol-related organ damage, trauma, and legal and interpersonal difficulties. Researches suggest that the chances of affecting breast cancer, heart diseases and other chronic diseases were high in women consuming alcohol. City Journal, Thrissur
