Death toll soars from Turkish quake

The effort to save any remaining earthquake victims continues around the clock in the eastern province of Van in Turkey after an earthquake reduced many of its buildings to rubble on Sunday, Oct. 23. A two-week old baby girl, her mother and grandmother were rescued in Ercis on Tuesday, but most teams are finding only bodies among the ruins. The 7.2 magnitude quake has reportedly killed at least 450 people as of Tuesday night and damaged more than 2,000 structures. Survivors live on the streets and in tents provided by the government.

  • Death toll rises to 523
  • Death toll was 471 Wednesday and 1,650 others are injured, the government says
  • A 5.2 earthquake hits Thursday
Ercis, Turkey (CNN) -- The death toll from a massive earthquake that shook eastern Turkey over the weekend rose to 523 on Thursday, up from 471 the day before, Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported.

An additional 1,650 people were injured by the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Sunday, according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Relief Agency.

The developments came as there were reports of a moderate earthquake in the country's south.

A 5.2 earthquake hit about 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of Sunday's quake, near the border with Iraq, the US Geological Survey reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage from that quake.

Rescuers are still finding bodies in the rubble from Sunday's quake but they have also found survivors.

On Wednesday rescuers pulled two more people from collapsed buildings.

So far 185 people have been rescued, the disaster agency said.
