Little space for mortal remains
Cremation of bodies, of late, have become really a problem for the families of deceased in Thrissur district after the main crematoriums in the district imposed certain rules restricting the number of bodies and the area to which the bodies belong.

Pambadi-Ivor Madom, Vadukkara Guru Deva Samajam crematorium and Lalur electric crematorium, which has been out of order, are the main crematoriums in the district.

These crematoriums are also facing challenges in the face of growing protests from the residents in the respective areas. The residents constantly complain that the crematoriums cause health hazards. Vadukkara Samara Samithi has alleged that there are eight more cancer patients in the locality. They balme it on the crematorium.

Vadukkara crematorium mainly receives bodies from 32 divisions and 12 wards in the old municipality area. The crematorium in an average receives 20-30 bodies a day. It is alleged that the management is running the crematorium as a profit-making business institution. They are said to be charging unreasonable amounts for cremating the bodies.

Pambadi Ivor Madom also in the midst of controversy as people in the Pazhayannur panchayat complain of health problems due to air and water pollution. As a result, the panchayat administration decided not to receive bodies from outside the panchayat.

Land records show that every panchayat has space for public crematorium. But, these crematoriums are not functional due to lack of contractors. Panchayat officials said that contractors are not coming forward to take up the job as it hardly provides a livelihood.

District panchayat president KV Dasan said that proper functioning of panchayat crematoriums is the only solution to the present crisis. Necessary steps will be taken soon to make these crematoriums functional, said Dasan.
