Subject: The BEST WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR KIDNEYS,

By Dr. Willie T. Ong (Internist and Cardiologist)

Most people know how to protect the heart, but do you know how to care for your kidneys? The kidneys' job is to help remove various toxins (drugs and food wastes), and expel them through the urine.

As we grow older, our kidneys will also start to age. A problem with kidney disease is that majority of patients have no warning symptoms.

Some time ago, we interviewed Dr. Elizabeth Montemayor, a nephrologist at the Philippine General Hospital.

Here are 10 ways to protect your kidneys:

1. Limit your salt intake

Too much salt is not only bad for your blood pressure, it's also bad for your kidneys. Many die of kidney disease, which can be partly attributed to a high salt intake and fondness for fish sauce, soy sauce, plain salt and salted fish. Even instant noodles, chips and nuts are teeming with salt. The problem with salt is that it encourages the body to retain water, and can increase your blood pressure (which damages the kidneys).

2. Don't load up on high protein foods such as meat and steaks

A high protein diet makes the kidneys work twice as hard. Pretty soon, your kidneys could get tired and some of the weaker kidney cells can die. A friendly reminder to people on a high-protein Atkin's Diet or South Beach Diet. The time-tested doctor's advice of moderation in everything will serve you well. Eat a balanced diet of rice, vegetables, fish and fruits and you can't go wrong.

3. Keep your blood pressure at 130/80 or lower

If your blood pressure is above 140 over 90, this can cause kidney damage within five years. The kidneys are said to be "happiest" with a blood pressure of 130/80 or lower. To help control your blood pressure, you should limit your salt intake, reduce weight and take medicines for high blood pressure, if needed.

4. Keep your blood sugar below 120 mg/dl

Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of kidney failure. A person with uncontrolled diabetes for 5-10 years may develop significant kidney damage. Consult your doctor and keep your blood sugar under control with diet, exercise and maintenance medicines.

5. Drink 8 glasses of water a day

Doctors usually advise people to take in 8 glasses of water a day, but this really depends on your age and condition. If you're sweating a lot and work outdoors, you may need to drink more than 8 glasses a day. However, if you are above 65 years of age, you may do well with just 6 glasses a day. Drinking enough water also prevents the formation of kidney stones.

6. Watch your intake of pain relievers and other drugs

Taking pain relievers like mefenamic acid, ibuprofen and the coxibs (like celecoxib) for a prolonged period of time may cause kidney damage. Because of this, we should limit taking these medicines to only a week, or just take them as needed. For those with chronic arthritis, try to look for other ways to relieve the pain such as using a hot water bag, pain reliever ointments, or the safer paracetamol tablet.

7. Be careful with tests and procedures using contrast dyes

Some tests, like CT Scans and MRIs, and angiograms, use a contrast dye which helps doctors delineate the organs better. The problem with such dyes is that they can cause kidney damage. To be safe, I would strongly advise you to consult a kidney specialist before undergoing such procedures.

8. Don't drink too much Vitamin C

Excess vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can lead to the formation of kidney stones in predisposed individuals. If you need to take vitamin C, a dose of 500 mg or less is safer.

9. Don't rely on food supplements to protect your kidneys

The above tips are so far the best tips to care for the kidneys.

10. Get a kidney check-up

Simple tests, such as a complete blood count, BUN and creatinin, and a urine analysis are the first screening tests for the kidneys. Finding a trace of protein in the urine can alert the doctor of possible kidney disease.

Bottomline is: Kidney diseases are expensive and difficult to treat. Let's take the necessary steps to protect our kidneys today.

Subject:  Eggs

Malaysia's top nutritionist on eggs
Dr JB Lim is the current TOP Nutritionist in Malaysia.

Dear all,

Thank you for asking me.

Sometime back someone asked me the same question about eggs and its effect on health. I have already written and replied to him or her in a lengthy article supporting the nutritive and health benefits of eggs. I also gave scientific updates on more recent findings some of which are correctly given here as sent to me.

However the author of the article needs to give at least some references of papers published in scientific journals to support the claims even though they are right.

But to super-summarize what I wrote last time in just 13 lines without me having to go all over again explaining the complexities of physiology, biochemistry, nutritional pathogenesis related to eggs and waste time and effort again, below are the yes points about eggs in human nutrition.
But I have to leave out some minor no points since the positive benefits far outweigh its negative values.

1. Eggs and milk are among the best foods for the body especially to a growing child.

2. Eggs do not cause an elevation of blood cholesterol.

3. Eggs do not clog up the coronary vessels as once thought. In fact the opposite is now true.
4. Eggs are low in energy value, and is a factor to consider in the formulation of a caloric-restriction diet.

5. Eggs protein quality is extremely high, and has a very high nitrogen-retention value. Hence it is extremely useful in post-surgical care, trauma, and in post-management of hypovolemic shock against negative nitrogen balance.

6. Eggs contain vitamin D in its natural form. The benefits of vitamin D require several chapters on human nutrition in medicine to discuss. And I refuse to repeat.

7. Eggs are cancer-protective, especially for breast cancer.

8. Eggs are very rich in sulfur-containing amino acids methionine which is a very crucial amino-acid in blocking damaging free radicals. These are directly linked to the pathogenesis of heart disease, cancers, DNA damage, all degenerative disorders, and accelerated aging.

9. Eggs protect against fatty liver, slow growth, macular degeneration (degeneration of the macula area of the retina in the eyes. This is responsible for central vision for reading, face recognition and detailed vision), edema (water retention), and various skin lesions.

10. Eggs promote healthy growth of nails, hair and skin.

11. Eggs are rich in tryphophan, selenium, iodine, and riboflavin (vitamin B2).

12. Eggs selenium content is cardio-protective against Keshan disease, cardiomyopathies (diseases involving the heart muscles, cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), myocardial dysfunction (poor heart function) and death from heart failure.

13. Eggs are protective against Kashin-Beck disease (osteoarthropathy), myxedematous endemic cretinism (mental retardation).
14. The list goes on…on!

This is one of those articles that may make one go to extreme and consume too much. Remember -- anything that is consumed too much is bad for your health. Do everything in moderation.
10 Health Benefits of Eggs
1. Eggs are great for the eyes. According to one study, an egg a day may prevent mascular degeneraton due to the carotenoid content, specifically and zeaxanthin. Both nutrients are more readily available to our bodies from eggs than from other sources.

2. In another study, researchers found that people who eat eggs every day lower their risk of developing cataracts, also because of the lutein and zeaxanthin in eggs.

3. One egg contains 6 grams of high-quality protein and all 9 essential amino acids.

4. According to a study by the Harvard School of Public Health, there is no significant link between egg consumption and heart disease. In fact, according to one study, regular consumption of eggs may help prevent blood clots, and heart attacks.

5. They are a good source of choline. One egg yolk has about 300 micrograms of choline. Choline is an important nutrient that helps regulate the brain, nervous system, and cardiovascular system.

6. They contain the right kind of fat. One egg contains just 5 grams of fat and only 1.5 grams of that is saturated fat.

7. New research shows that, contrary to previous belief, moderate consumption of eggs does not have a negative impact on cholesterol. In fact, recent studies have shown that regular consumption of two eggs per day does not affect a person's lipid profile and may, in fact, improve it. Research suggests that it is saturated fat that raises cholesterol rather than dietary cholesterol.
8. Eggs are one of the only foods that contain naturally occurring vitamin D.

9.. Eggs may prevent breast cancer. In one study, women who consumed at least 6 eggs per week lowered their risk of breast cancer by 44%.

10. Eggs promote healthy hair and nails because of their high sulphur content and wide array of vitamins and minerals. Many people find their hair growing faster after adding eggs to their diet, especially if they were previously deficient in foods containing sulphur or B12.

9 Reasons to Drink a Cup of Honey Water

Honey water is a remarkable drink, brimming with nutritional ingredients that will give your body energy and a health boost early in the morning. The best part is that all you need to make it is a tablespoon of honey and a cup of lukewarm water. This delicious beverage is refreshing in the summer, a real treat in the winter and a true wonder cure for a variety of ailments. If you're still not convinced, here are 9 reasons you should make honey water your drink of choice in the morning.
Honey Water

1. Watch as Your Weight Drops
Drinking honey water can help you lose weight, despite the sweetness of the drink. The natural sugar in the honey is much healthier than the processed white sugar or corn syrup that is used in soft drinks, and is a healthier source of calories. By replacing soft drinks with honey water you'll see a difference, although not overnight.

2. Maintain Healthy Bowels
Some people are shy about this topic, but there's no shame in discussing it. One cup of honey water a day will help your digestive system and keep you regular. The antibacterial properties of honey help prevent stomach aches and indigestion, and help the body strengthen your stomach's lining.

3. Boost Your Immune System
Honey is a natural antibacterial substance, and is also full of enzymes, vitamins and minerals – all of which help protect your body against germs, particularly organic honey. Several studies have shown that Manuka honey, a unique honey made from a plant in New Zealand, can kill even antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and can be used as a natural cure for Helicobacter.
Honey Water
4. Reduce Allergy Symptoms
Studies have shown that eating locally-produced honey helps the body get accustomed to the local pollen, reducing allergy symptoms. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, drink a cup of water with local honey.

5. Healthy Energy Boost
Even mild dehydration can lead to you feeling tired, so imagine what a cup of water and honey can do to your energy levels. Unlike coffee, the energy boost doesn't subside. Instead, the body remains energized for a prolonged period of time.

6. Say Goodbye to Sore Throats
Every grandmother will tell you that honey is the perfect remedy for a sore throat and coughing. Drinking honey water will create a type of coating around your esophagus, which will calm any coughing and pain, creating a smooth, pleasant sensation in your throat.
Honey Water

7. Detox
Honey water helps flush toxins out of your body, both by helping your colon, as well as by its antibacterial properties. Detoxing your body regularly helps you feel better and prevents infections.. To boost the detox, add some freshly squeezed lemon to your honey water. Lemons too contain antibacterial properties, are diuretic, and aid liver functions.

8. Less Bloating
Feeling bloated and gassy? A cup of honey water will help neutralize the gas, reducing the bloated sensation. It's highly recommended that you drink it after a big meal.

9. Keeps Your Heart Healthy
Above all of its other advantages, honey water helps in raising your "good" cholesterol (HDL) levels. Furthermore, it prevents the body from producing stress hormones, which put pressure on the heart and cardiovascular system.
